The grade school PTA sponsors a RECORD DRIVE December 7 to 11 with diverse records including folk dances ballroom and waltzes. Mrs Mose Cauthen notes sizes welcome and dancing classes twice monthly at the Junior High School auditorium.
Alamogordo First Baptist Church completed a Thanksgiving canned foods drive for the Children's Home in Portales. The collection included 140 pounds of sugar 50 pounds of shortening hundreds of canned foods and jars of home canned goods. A home truck picked up the items Tuesday morning.Mrs Untz thanks all contributors.
Quincy Northrip 38 of the Weed community was crushed to death while loading a truck at Valley Lumber Company sawmill, five miles south of Weed. A coroner’s inquest ruled accidental death as a log rolled off the truck and fell on him around 9 a m. He was a Oklahoma native who had lived in Otero county six months and worked as a truck driver. Funeral services were planned after shipment to Oklahoma. He is survived by a wife, six daughters, one son, four brothers, four sisters, and his mother.
The body of Yvonne Violet Leon 13 died at home in San Jose California on November 22 and was buried in Monte Vista cemetery Alamogordo after funeral services at Mullins Hamilton Funeral Home at 3 p m Saturday November 28 Reverend Amado Elias officiated She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Jesus R Leon of San Jose She was a niece of Mrs Leo Aubel of Alamogordo Pall bearers were Fred Malone Jr Elias Benitez Leonard L Gallegos Joe Benitez Gilbert Gutierrez and Freddy Mackmiller.
The Alamogordo High School and Holloman Air Force Base bands join the Optimist club led Christmas parade Friday December 18 at 2 30 pm. Santa will ride with 400 pounds of candy and nuts to distribute. Afterward he speaks on the courthouse lawn daily at about 4 pm until Christmas.
Mrs. Trinidad Garcia Olosconga of Tularosa died at Ruidoso Hondo Valley hospital Friday November 27 at age 74. Funeral at St Francis Church in Tularosa Monday November 30 at 8 am officiated by Father John. Survived by husband Lorenzo L Oloscoaga two sons Fermin and Juan Oloscoaga and three grandchildren. Mullins Hamilton handled arrangements.
A 22 ton truck carrying three soldiers from the 837th Radio Relay Team overturned in Carr Canyon on Sac Peak Road at 9 45 am. Pvt Berman escaped injury, while Pfc Ronald Leemp and Pfc Henry Bowers were hospitalized at Holloman Base Hospital in serious condition. The vehicle flipped one and a half times after hitting a road hole. The men are based at White Sands Proving Ground and attached to Holloman.
Jack Danley, vice-chairman of the Otero County Soil Conservation District, announced the Land Judging Contest will be held Saturday December 12 instead of December 5. He cited farmers returning from the State Farm Bureau meeting and FFA chapter district meetings at Artesia and Las Cruces as reasons for the shift.

On Sunday afternoon December 6 at 4 p m the local Elks Lodge and lodges nationwide will hold a memorial service for deceased brothers. In Alamogordo the event occurs at the junior high school auditorium with Exalted Ruler Joe Moffett leading. Reverend John Borley of Tularosa will deliver the principal address. Music by the Alamogordo High School Triple Trio and Leonard Fribley of Tularosa.
The Otero County Chapter of American Red Cross will hold its annual meeting at 801 New York Avenue Alamogordo at 7 30 p m. County chairman Harold ODell will conduct the session and officers will be elected.
Several thousand gathered in downtown Alamogordo for the Christmas season opening sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. The crowd enjoyed a lawn program by the New Mexico School for the Visually Handicapped Choral group, the Alamogordo High School chorus, and the Alamogordo High School band, broadcast on KALG. The Rotary Club tree was lit and stores stayed open to showcase treasure hunt gifts from 46 merchants. Numbers were drawn Monday night, with winners to be announced later as window numbers change daily.
Harold G. Dell announced a January 28 talent show at Alamogordo High School to aid the March of Dimes. The event will be broadcast on station KALG with listener donations for performers. an audition is set for January 10 at 2 p.m. in the Junior High School auditorium. The 1953 show raised 2400 dollars. a 3000 dollar quota is planned for 1954.
College Addition residents were asked to view the proposed paving map at City Hall to decide if they want paving on their property. City manager Herbert Holcomb urged those who did not see the map at Jim's College Market to check it at City Hall before the city commission meeting Tuesday night December 2.
Mild weather and the Thanksgiving holiday drew 2 883 visitors to White Sands National Monument on Thursday as 681 cars passed the entrance gate. Total yearly figures show 50 361 cars and 209 666 visitors, down from 1952 due to a sand storm and low July attendance. Raymond Rixey resigned as building maintenance man to enter private business. successor not named.
Alamogordo officials introduce Ordinance No. 179 prohibiting keeping livestock within city limits except poultry dogs and cats and excluding only west of the S P tracks. Final enactment likely December 8 with penalties up to 100 dollars or 30 days in jail per violation.
The Alamogordo Grade School received an amplifier a record turntable and a microphone from the Grade School P-TA announced by Mrs Betty Scott P-TA president Principal E B Jordan accepted for the school The turntable plays all size records purchased for 195 09 from PTA funds The equipment will be shared by civic groups using the Junior High auditorium and a demo occurred Monday night November 30 with a magician’s show Amplified music will be used in gym classes and in dancing and skating sessions at the auditorium.
Bids for construction of new roads leading to the range at Holloman Air Force Base are being received by the U S Engineering Corps. Contractors may submit bids to Col. Lynn C. Barnes District Engineer Box 1538 Central Avenue SE Albuquerque New Mexico.
A delegation of 22 foreign agricultural trainees from Egypt India China and Iran visited the U S Extension Service County Agent in Alamogordo Monday. Walter Wade outlined Otero County agriculture noting cattle cotton fruit and vegetable farming plus 70 wells for irrigation and ongoing land leveling and pest controls. Jimmy Wayne described soil conservation methods as the group prepares to tour other farm regions over seven months while staying at New Mexico State College.
The City Commission calls for bids to build two lined storage reservoirs with a treatment plant and 18 000 feet of supply pipeline. Bids due December 15 at 3 p.m. Alternate plans include one 50 million gallon or two 50 million gallon reservoirs with different linings.
Alamogordo Lions Club members start a two day door to door sale Friday 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and all day Saturday. Proceeds fund glasses eye examinations and welfare of the blind. Items include brooms mats rugs and tableware with a truck sale at New York and 10th.
The county commissioners planning committee favors Wolgemood & Millington of Santa Fe as architects for a new courthouse. George Abbott says an official decision will wait on the commissioners approval. Planning proceeds room by room once approved, with costs from a potential general obligation bond issue guiding the project.
A three family frame dwelling at 823 Maryland Ave Alamogordo burned Thanksgiving night with no injuries. Damages about 4000 dollars. The Templeton family and others lost possessions and volunteers organize clothing and bedding drives led by Rev R A Herren of Nazarene Church.
The Governor's Traffic Safety Coordinating Committee will hold its annual district meeting in Alamogordo on Wednesday December 9 at 8 am in the Community Center. Guest speakers from Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands Proving Ground safety offices will attend. The public is invited to discuss state safety conditions and adoption of district programs. Elections will name a new chairman vice chairman and secretary with current leaders listed.
The contest for the Second District seat ends as Lee B. Carter resigns effective December 1. James W. Telles, winner of a Supreme Court appeal, has not yet been seated. Judge Harris must issue the seating order after a District Court hearing. Telles declines to attend meetings as a nonvoting member until seated. Carter’s loss stems from disqualified check marks on ballots.
The Retail Trade Committee of the Chamber of Commerce advised stores to stay open until 8 p m on Fridays December 4 11 and 18 and Saturday December 19 and also until 8 p m on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday December 21 22 and 23. Merchants agreed with the plan and will close on the day after Christmas Saturday December 26.
Alamogordo marks Salvation Army Week from November 29 to December 6 by proclamation of Mayor Walter S. Mullins. The document lauds the Army for its spiritual and humanitarian principles and notes volunteers nationwide aid all without regard to race creed or origin. Dr. S. E. Cooper chairs the Alamogordo Salvation Army Service Unit.
A November permit roundup shows 19 new permits in Alamogordo, including a $2,000 grocery store at 2010 Cuba Avenue and a $10,000 private home at 817 Cedar Street. Other items include a $1,600 store addition, a $425 tool house, a $150 sign, two temporary permits, and several new or remodeled homes with values ranging from $1,000 to $8,000 across multiple streets.
Word reached Alamogordo on the first Sunday that William Richards, a longtime local figure and Alamogordo High School graduate, died in Lima Ohio. Surviving relatives include a wife in Lima a son in the Air Corps four sisters and two brothers with funeral arrangements pending in Lima.
