Santa Fe November 28 instructions from Selective Service State Headquarters outline registration for men turning 18 since July 1, 1942. Three periods set with exact weeks in December 1942 for birthdays July through December 1942, and a rule to register on the 18th birthday thereafter unless it falls on a Sunday or holiday.
State College New Mexico opens its annual conference for county agents December 7 to 10 with participants from 29 counties. A. B. Fite leads wartime Extension Service discussions on topics including Victory Councilmen Farm Labor and Food-for-Freedom programs. A. H. Hauke will oversee a farm account school on income tax returns.
The Alamogordo Public Library adds The Raft by Robert Trumbull The Days of Ofelia by Gertrude Diamant and Crescent Carnival by Frances Parkinson Keyes. The Raft recounts Harold Dixon Gene Aldrich and Tony Pastula surviving 34 days on a raft after a bomber crash. Diamant’s non fiction colorful Mexico visit includes intelligence tests and life with Indian families. Crescent Carnival places Keyes in the Deep South in a multi generational novel set in New Orleans with strong drama.
The Otero County Selective Service Board lists residents accepted for military duty. The Revival Meeting at the First Baptist Church enters its second week ending Sunday with a baptismal service. Nineteen members have joined. more are expected. Rev. J. M. Sibley of Sweetwater, Texas preaches. Charles McLaughlin of Fort Worth leads singing. Attendance goals and past records noted. Congregation invited to Alamogordo. Daily services 10 am and 7 30 pm. Sunday school 9 30 am.
Jos. W. Roessler, now Tax Advisor for Internal Revenue Service, joins the Gordon Shelton Plaza Office in Alamogordo. He offers income tax filing help to businesses and individuals. Roessler came from the East New Mexico oil fields. his son Sgt Norbert R. Roessler with the 200th Coast Artillery AA was missing in action at Ba taan and Corregidor.
A new intermediary Troop No 2 is formed in Alamogordo with Mrs. R.8S. Kieve as leader and St Johns Episcopal Guild as sponsor. Members include Naomi Walker Edwina Kimmons Margery Lane Jenny Lou Beall Addlyn Painter Lola Canfield Jean Stevenson Dixie Sutton Dorothy Bell and Jessie Louise Bass. The girls hiked to La Luz Canyon taught drawing by Karl Larsen and folded bandages for two Fridays at the Red Cross room. They support the National Scrap Drive and rehearse Christmas carols for USO Club soldiers. Proceeds from selling Christmas cards bought groceries for House of Providence Tularosa. A tea for the Troop committee is planned this Saturday. The troop meets Wednesdays at 4 p m at Mrs Kieves home for ages 12 to 14.
Southern Pacific announces holiday travel rules from December 15 to January 5 with required advance reservations for coach and sleeping car travel. Reservations are only at ticket offices, not by phone, to prioritize armed forces furlough and visiting relatives. The railroad warns of limited equipment and asks the public to avoid nonessential trips to support the war effort.
Mrs Brunson died at the family home on Ninth Street Tuesday evening December 1 after a long illness. Funeral services by Rev Irvin Smith were held at the mortuary Thursday. She was 48 and had lived in Alamogordo since 1937. Surviving are husband five sons Floyd Perry of Vail Arizona Paul Wilma and Thomas and five daughters Mrs Jesse Black Kerrville Texas Mrs J T Black Mrs Jesse Mitchell and Joyce and Mary Brunson. A sister Mrs Alice Calloway came from Cliff New Mexico for the funeral.
Since November 18 1942 traps were set on the Moss Lee and Langford places resulting in thirty coyotes two bobcats one fox and one badger taken. Coyotes are partly pups this year and have moved from air base and ranges into the trapping area. Dry weather aids trapping as water sources dwindle. Quail remain plentiful through the valley though quail hunting appears down due to rubber and shell shortages. Hunters from Oro Grande to Alamogordo were licensed and within bag limits.
In gratitude to the Presbyterian Church Pastor physician and kind friends who aided Mrs Mead during her illness the family thanks Mrs Gonzales and Mrs Martin for their devoted tasks and remembers the loving care that eased the final hours. The report details 1943 farm production goals to be announced in early December and lists the main challenges and suggested solutions. It covers transportation, labor, machinery, conservation, and scientific farming to meet targets without expanding land use.
Tax collections at the Treasurers office set a record for the past month with about half of the 1942 taxes paid. About $180,000 of the year’s taxes have been collected as the period ends. The treasurer also purchased $25,000 in War Bonds Series 6 maturing in 12 years at 2 percent interest, negotiable after six months.
The Maritime Commission estimates nearly 400000 additional workers must be recruited by May to keep the Victory Fleet on schedule. Freighter construction will rise dramatically next year to 16,000,000 tons, up from 8,000,000 tons in 1942.
Memorials for the late Mrs. J H Mead were held Friday November 27 at the Presbyterian church. Rev Lacy Simms conducted the service with Mayne Tweed playing organ selections and hymns from a phonograph. Rev Simms spoke on the deceased's fine character. many friends attended. a life sketch appeared in the prior News issue.
James V. Auriemma, Salvation Army representative for the Southwest, arrives for his 24th annual visit. Auriemma notes strong support for the Army among soldiers and civilians, and he will sing at the Presbyterian church on Sunday morning.
Community meetings in Tularosa Cloudcroft and Alamogordo announced with dates and times. Tularosa at 7 30 p m December 14 in Town Hall Cloudcroft December 15 2 30 p m in School House Gym Alamogordo December 16 2 30 p m in Court House.
The fund to fill Overseas Kit Bags grows but needs more donations to reach 400 dollars. Local groups and individuals have given amounts from five to twenty plus dollars, with totals from St. John’s Episcopal to Mescalero clubs aiding the effort as Red Cross planning anticipates Navy kit bags.
County rationing office at Town Hall sees a steady flow of applicants for rationing boards. The crowd remains large as days pass and staff work to issue rationing allotments.
Midget Mexico welterweight champion of Texas and Old Mexico seeks another state title by facing New Mexico champion Bobby Montoya at Liberty Hall El Paso Thursday night. The card includes Joe Guerra vs Sandy Martin in a two out of three fall wrestling bout and a mixed dance to follow with local prelims.
Nick Analle a 20 year old blind youth in Santa Fe offered to volunteer for the Navy. Lieut B G Manley welcomed the gesture saying the spirit shown will win the war while noting a sightless person cannot enlist at this time.
Funeral services were held at Geren Leadinghaus chapel Friday at 4 PM for John Henry Culwell. He died Wednesday November 25 at his daughter’s Alamogordo home. Age five, he had been ill about a year. Survived by seven children and seven grandchildren. body shipped to Amarillo for interment. He had recently lived in Alamogordo.
The downstairs office rooms at the courthouse are undergoing wall removal y sanding and floor varnishing. Workers are reshaping the space to look spick and span.
Eugene B. Rowley of the Alamogordo Airbase and Grace Sheehy of Columbus Ohio married at the Presbyterian Manse on December 1 with Rev. Lacy Simms officiating.
Corporal David Barclay of Alamogordo Airbase and Isabel Snavely of Highland Park Michigan wed on November 16 with Rev Simms officiating. The couple resides at the Albert Burch residence.
Lt Jack Head of Deming and Miss Eunice McMahon of Las Cruces wed in a ceremony led by Rev Simms before departing to Camp Claiborne Louisiana for Lieut Head's new post. Head's father long served with the New Mexico state police.

Mr and Mrs John J Buck of Tularosa announce the engagement of their daughter Miss Bupa Buck to Lieut Harry O Morris formerly of Albuquerque now with the Anti Aircraft Artillery at Camp Haan Calif Plans for the wedding have not been announced Miss Buck grew up in Tularosa and graduated from Tularosa High School and the State University at Albuquerque earning a Masters She taught in Haverman public schools and has been a mathematics faculty member at New Mexico University She recently flew to Los Angeles where the engagement was announced at a dinner Lieut Morris is the son of Mrs Daisy Morris of Warmington and J O Morris of Los Angeles He is a graduate of the State University at Albuquerque and George Washington University and a member of the bar of Washington D C and New Mexico Before enlistment he worked with the Labor Department in Washington.
Ben Longwell of Longwell Brothers reports their Flk area sawmill is supplying substantial mine timbers for nearby Potash operations around Carlsbad. The plant paused work through summer and fall, but has focused on improvements and expects full capacity this winter as conditions improve. They operate in state timber near Forest and Indian timber.
