The Mescalero Red Hats, a forest fire fighting unit, received the Meritorious Service Award from the Interior Department in a reservation ceremony. The Department of Labor and the New Mexico Employment Security Commission signed an agreement making unemployed federal civilian workers eligible for unemployment compensation under state law. Effective January 1, 1955, claims and determinations will be handled by state agencies as agents of the U S Secretary of Labor under Public Law 767.
Alamogordo will start the holiday season with a Treasure Hunt offering an estimated $1,000 in prizes from 62 merchants. A tree lighting ceremony and Christmas program at the courthouse lawn features the high school band chorus and city choirs, broadcast by Station KALG. Tickets were distributed to about 18,000 residents and shoppers, with prize numbers posted at stores for the hunt beginning Friday night.
World famous evangelist Billy Graham will address a capacity crowd in El Paso at the Coliseum on December 10 starting 7 30 PM. Tickets are not required as seating for 8300 is available without charge. The El Paso Ministerial Association notes the event as a chance to bring him back for a revival in 1956. Graham recently finished a campaign in New Orleans and is making West Coast TV shorts.
O A Steele was named chair man of the newly created committee on safety and courtesy in its first meeting at city hall Monday night. Dwight Olinger was elected secretary. They discussed duties and conduct and formed plans for observing national Safe Driving Day proclaimed by the President for December 15.
A state AP staff with 148 years total service becomes Alamogordo News staff Sunday as the daily paper joins the AP. The New Mexico team includes Lief Erickson as chief, R D Adair heading traffic, Lanky Trimble state editor, John B Curtis in Santa Fe, Robert Barnes on government and Indian affairs, Stephen W Lowell on New Mexico history, and Shaffer Award winners Bill Richardson Julius Golden.
Captain Jack L. Kearney named commander of Flight B at 9829th Air Reserve Squadron in El Paso Alamagordo replacing Captain W W Topping. Kearney a former World War II pilot from Tularosa. Other appointments include Lt J D Anderson Maj Walter Larson Capt Charles Savoini Lt Charlie Clement Lt Dick Hevenor Capt Frank Simpkins and Maj G E Hanson. Flight praised by Squadron HQ for training and meets Mondays at 7 30 p m at the National Guard Armory near the radio station.
