Police chief Joe Moffett investigated and noted considerable damage to both vehicles.
School activities underway as classes elect officers and sponsor assignments. Senior class picks Brunell as president with Shanks as VP, Peterson secretary, Hughen treasurer, Turpin sponsor. junior Rolland leads with Lee as VP and Brunell secretary. Freshmen elect Faris president, Lacy VP, Daugherty secretary, Skipworth treasurer. Pep squad counts 30 returning members with 17 new spots. Josie Chanez named pep squad leader.
The Town Board will determine after September 1 whether to buy the summer-drilled airport well under the contingent contract with driller James McNatt. The well is believed to yield over 500 gallons per minute of suitable domestic water and will be tested for permanence and hardness before final negotiation.
The Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce industrial committee launches a radio series to honor one local industry each month. The first program airs at 7 45 PM on Thursday September 7.
U S Border Patrolman Michael T. Box Sr known as Tommy Box was killed when his monoplane crashed into an irrigation canal near Anthony while he searched for illegal aliens. He died at 6 30 am and funeral services were held in El Paso with burial near Dallas. He is survived by his wife and son Lt Tommy Box Jr.
The state case against Hobbs mayor Paul Heard for falsifying records was vacated after a history of venue changes from Lea to Roosevelt to Otero counties. A mistrial and hung jury led to the latest postponement while judge A W Marshall presides. Also, Evans and Pellman pleaded guilty to giving liquor to an Indian and were fined. other cases concluded with guilty pleas, fines, and a forgery sentence.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars launched the 16th annual national essay contest for high school students. Topic is Freedom's Open Door with entries under 1 009 words. Regional deadline is April 1 1951 and state deadline May 1 1951.
Police Chief Joe Moffett announces Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce Rotarians and Lions back national safety week starting September 4. The groups plan radio talks and campaigns to publicize child safety and urge public support for safety measures.
Alamogordo schools report record enrollment with 1600 on Monday and a week total near 1700, up from 1500 last year. High school numbers reach 856 and may rise to 375, reflecting a shift with 60 graduates replaced by 130 freshmen.
First Lieutenant Margaret Cray Williams 38, duty nurse at Holloman Air Force Base hospital, was found dead in her quarters at 11 55 a m Saturday August 26. Cause of death undetermined. Williams served in Europe and Far East campaigns, earning campaign ribbons and WWII medals. Burial to Zebulon as Captain Harriet Stover escorts remains.
In three calls issued by the local Selective Service office 21 men from Otero county have been asked to report for physical examinations and 10 have been accepted for military service. Mrs. A L Dunn, secretary, told reporters this week. Thirty three men have been called in Lincoln county altogether. Of these 11 were accepted after having taken physical examinations.
The Town Board authorized converting $78,612 in paving certificates for District No 4 into a $200,000 Special Assessment Paving Bond issue. The Thygesen Contracting Co received certificates for work and sold $60,000 to Otero County State Bank. the rest moved to Henry Dahlberg Co and Boettcher and Co. Bond firms. The town gains a 5 to 6 percent margin to cover handling. conversion costs are borne by the bond buyers. Payments by property owners remain unchanged with $60,000 already retired.
The Chamber of Commerce rural relations committee led by John Collins will host two social events for newcomers and long-time residents in September and October at James Canyon picnic area near Mayhill. Mrs. Lillian Bagwell coordinates dates with mountain contacts. Committee members include Leo Aubel Eugene Dale C E Moore and Johnwill Faris. Next open forum is September 11 at 7 30 p.m. in the Community Center.
In Cloudcroft on Tuesday the Otero County Electric Co operative board approved purchasing the Carrizozo municipal power plant and offered the Carrizozo council 121000 dollars for the physical properties and transmission system. REA attorney Allan D. Walker reported ongoing negotiations with the village council, which had not yet set a sale figure or taken action.
Garcia family celebrates the birth of triplets Beatrice Belinda Dolores Darlene and Victoria Virginia born July 14 in Maywood hospital weighing under five pounds each. The babies are home now after incubator care as father Joe Garcia recovered from injuries and siblings include a 17 year old son and 10 year old daughter. Mrs. Rafaela Viscarra writes to her sister Mrs. Ramona Viscarra detailing the family’s move to larger unfurnished quarters and Queen for a Day prize including a refrigerator washing machine and a triple stroller. Jesus Viscarra and Cruz Martinez are relatives living nearby.
Mrs Rafaela L Sanchez died Sunday at age 70 and was buried at Monte Vista cemetery. Requiem high mass by Father Linus followed by 4:00 p m services at the Catholic church with Father Murphy of Tularosa. She lived at 501 New York Avenue and leaves 19 children 35 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Dr Clinton P Wunder of Bent New Mexico was appointed director of public relations for the Oklahoma City Live Stock Exchange effective August 1 He and Mrs Wunder plan a weekly rural news feature about the market which sold over a million head of live stock last year They will keep their home on the Champion ranch at Bent
C of C notes that the Highway 70 committee met Monday evening to discuss kicking off their membership drive, with chairman Charlie Walcott leading.
The Otero County Community Concert Association starts its membership drive with a 5 30 pm kickoff dinner for workers at the Community Center. Mrs. Sanguinet and Mrs. Williamson oversee plans, with a Chicago representative from Columbia Artists Management in attendance.
Edward Martin longtime Alamogordo resident died at 2:25 a m Thursday August 24 at Southwestern General Hospital after a year of illness heart disorder and complications. Funeral in El Paso with interment in Restlawn beside his wife. He was born September 21 1870 in Barry Illinois lived in St Louis and Alamogordo moving to town in 1932. Survived by son Edward L and an invalid aunt in Barry. former bailiff at El Paso courts and barber at Ft. Bliss. He was active in El Paso First Presbyterian Masonic lodge and Royal Arcanum Compton Hill area.

He cited past defeats, noted county by county gains through organized efforts, and outlined a county-wide drive with Roessler leading a new precinct committee.
