Alamogordo public schools open September 4 with classified pupils to bring books Monday. Recitations begin opening day and some classes may wait for room prep. Teachers hold a September 1 faculty meeting at 9 in the High School. Cups and drinking fountains noted for sanitary use.
County Central Committee will meet in Alamogordo on Tuesday September 5 1911 to set the nominating method for a full county ticket and handle other business. All precinct committee men are urged to attend. L R Huenxs county chairman.
Presbyterian Church schedules morning worship at 11 a.m. and evening at 7 30 p.m. for the time being with Bibles urged. J A Armstrong promotes attendance while Mrs T B Grace and children depart for Douglas, now Mr Grace headquarters. Joe Jolly arrives from El Paso for a visit and Miss Rose Murphy returns from Cloudcroft after attending a teachers institute.
Governor William J. Mills issues a Labor Day proclamation declaring Monday September 4, 1911 a legal holiday in the Territory of New Mexico and urges suspension of nonessential business to allow observance. Secretary Nathan Jaffa notes the proclamation.
Governor Mills appointed Judge Alford W. Cooley of Silver City as a regent of the New Mexico Normal School after W.S. Cox resigned. The Silver City jurist, a former assistant attorney general, is praised as a capable, forward looking addition to the Normal board. Mrs. Thomas O'Reilly and daughter Lucille are due back tomorrow from Southern California.
The board met after a quorum was formed and reviewed bids for Alamogordo Cloudcroft road construction. Dodgen won the $14,000 bid. Officials approved county refunding bonds at $15,000, sold at par to redeem older bonds at 6 percent. Abstracts on unknown owner property were ordered, funds transferred, 1911 tax rolls approved, and James Stevenson named justice of the peace at Oro Grande. Groom Brothers and Lilly butcher bonds approved.
A column mocks loud print shop puffery and overbearing advertising in the printing trade while noting readers’ varied judgments. It includes a 1911 citation from Impressions and a letter from Guturit Smith of Alamogordo NM inviting collaboration with American Printer. A Republican County Central Committee meeting is announced for Ramagordo on September 6, 1911 with W. E. Carmack listed. Ephraim is praised as a curiosity.
Mr and Mrs George B Bent left Sunday afternoon for Chicago summoned by the death of Mrs Bent s daughter in law.
Government announces a leave of absence for homesteaders allowing time away from duties to manage homestead affairs while preserving eligibility for continued assistance and future benefits. No credit repercussions are specified for those taking the leave.
Absent homesteaders under the August 19 1911 act gain a leave until April 15 1912 but cannot claim credit for absence in proofs. Contests on abandonment limited. meeting of Territorial Republican Central Committee set for September 4 1911 in Santa Fe. Obituaries and notices follow including local social and church events and travels of residents.
Albuquerque will host a week of political activity during the first New Mexico State Fair set for October 9 to 14. Governor Mills will open the fair with staff, and territorial and state leaders will visit. Republican H Bursum and Democrat W McDonald will confer with leaders statewide as candidates campaign across the state. The fair grounds lobby scene and hotel reservations signal a major gathering of political operatives during fair week, with many planning addresses and caucuses.
J. M. Hawkins of Alamogordo purchased $2,000 in Pecos Valley cement schoolhouse bonds from the county treasurer. He paid a $21.60 premium plus accrued interest and supplied the bonds. Denominations were $500 each, due thirty years after date with a ten year option, at six percent interest.
