Otero County Fair committees announce higher cash prizes for Sept 13 14 in livestock Mohair goats and group canning departments. Awards include 10 7 5 dollar prizes in yearlings heifer calves and steer calves and 250 150 100 in mohair classes. Additional jars ribbons and sweepstakes offer more prizes across sewing baking domestic arts and the flower show.
In district court this week Marie Fritz a minor suing by Lulu Mae Fritz her mother for benefits under an insurance policy and Norman D Darby vs Vivian Shurley Darby for divorce were filed.
Rep John J Dempsey to speak in Tularosa at 2 00 pm and Alamogordo at 8 00 pm on Tuesday September 3 as he seeks the Democratic nomination for U S Senate against Dennis Chavez.
Mrs. Max Pierce writes that the Alamogordo California semi annual picnic will be at Houghton Park on September 15 1940. All former Alamogordo residents and friends are invited to an all day event.
Local labor unions plan a Good Will barbecue at Alameda Park on Labor Day September 2 beginning after 12. A 9 30 parade led by Alamogordo school band will precede speeches music and recitations at the park. Sandwiches coffee and voluntary donations from local businesses will support the event aimed at goodwill between unions and citizens.
Mr and Mrs Perl Charles traveled from Santa Fe this week and visited local residents and sites during their stay.
Mt Park High Rolls News notes a county fair planning gathering at Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Walker's home with local citizens from the county attending. The piece mentions cooler nights, school preparation, and a shift in CCC leadership as Lt. Alden E. Spees departs for Fort Bliss with Mrs. Spees and Betty returning to El Paso. Mark Perovich becomes acting commander.
Tuesday Charlie Bell Jr. and John Cadwallader began the procession from here toward State College. Edgar A. Cadwallader, Pete, and James Godley are expected to follow soon.
Students look forward to starting next week and continuing musical training with Mrs Patterson, an appreciated extra to regular school work, as praised by children and parents for last year.
The Roger Mayfield family plans to move to Tularosa this weekend to enroll their children in the local schools next week. Mr Mayfield works with the Soil Conservation Service here and the camp will shift to Tularosa in a few weeks, prompting the move now.
The Croger family on the Dallas Spencer place are continuing a similar activity for the same purpose noted in nearby households. Local neighbors observe the ongoing effort and its shared motivation across the area.
Mrs J Carpenter and son and Mrs Roger Dill with three children from Fabens visited Mrs W W Carpenter and her parents the C M Bells. The trip was to see Mrs Carpenter’s daughter in law and Mrs Dill’s sister in law who has been staying with the Bells for several weeks.
Mrs Carpenter departed Monday for her return trip to Andrews Texas.
Miss Ethel McBride of McBride Hospital Las Cruces spent the weekend visiting the Roger Mayfield family at High Rolls, continuing a short local social visit.
Mrs I Braunstein of the city is returning home Saturday after visiting her son Chris Braunstein in Los Angeles for several weeks. She is accompanied by her granddaughter Miss Jerry Braunstein.
Harry G. Rhoades and his family from Canon City Colorado are spending a two week vacation with the Jesse Dorndorf family who also came from Canon City. Mr. Rhoades works for the Postal Service in Canon City. Mrs. Celia Stone mother of Mrs W E Mallette arrived from Tennessee and will spend the winter with the Maltettes.
Alex Quick from the lower Mesa visits Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bra ziel this week for an informal gathering.
Mrs Dallas Spencer Mrs C M Yard Mrs W R Blount Miss Estherine Mulvin of Memphis and Rev J T Mulvin of Louisville Ky toured historic sites in northern New Mexico last week visiting Taos and nearby Indian pueblos.
Father Mulvin and sister Miss Katherine left the party in Albuquerque on their return trip home while the others returned to Mt. Park on Saturday.
Our Boy Scouts Troop 129 traveled to Tas Cruces on Tuesday to join troops from the Southwest for their annual meet and to participate in the program including swimming at Mesilla Dam.
The study attracted forty two participants and achieved strong results. The community extends thanks to Alamogordo visitors who organized the program with local aid.
Coach Clyde Wafer arrived with his Ysleta team and set up at the Y Camp to toughen the players through rugged drills in the Sacramentos region.
R. C. Smith, custodian of the YMCA Camp, left Tuesday for a brief trip to Trinidad Colorado to see his 78 year old father and a sister, and another sister in Albuquerque. He has not seen his father in five years. Pleasant trip to our friend Smitty.
The Saga of Tularosa was presented at Tete school stadium to a good Tuesday crowd and a smaller Wednesday audience. Chase Webb wrote directed the piece weaving early Tularosa history with descendants of settlers and Apaches. Notable scenes include Round Mountain fight and the 1866 harvest looting, the 1869 Church of St Francis, and an authentic Mexican quadrille by Spanish American citizens. The production featured attractive costumes and clever scenery.
The first annual Otero County District Boy Scout Swimming Meet at Stout's Pool drew about sixty Scouts and five troops on August 22. Troop 127 Alamogordo won, Troop 129 Mt. Park was second, and Troop 123 Tularosa placed third.
Prizes for the Kid Rodeo and Kids Horse Races at the Otero County Fair will be shown in Rolland's Drug Store window. Arena director G B Oliver announces 80 head of calves and steers for riding and roping and promises a fast show. A $75 Jordan saddle awaits the best all around kid cowboy with entries already rolling in. The El Paso Sheriff's Posse may send about 20 riders to join the parade. Kids' races on September 14 use a %-mile track at 2 pm, with track elevation and fencing underway and a carry all loaned by the State Highway Department. The rodeo runs nightly at 7:30 under lights in the ball park.
The Alamogordo Woman's Club will hold its first meeting of the year on Friday afternoon September 46 with Mrs Ed Hudson guiding a musical program. New officers will serve as hostesses for the afternoon.
Mrs. Walter Schoelte, Miss Irene Flower, and Miss Edith M. Zernow of Charleston, South Carolina, plan a ten day vacation this year. Their trip was chosen to see the Great White Sands.
Miss Helen Bedford head of Cape Girardeau Missouri Art Department and her sister Virginia Bedford of Farmville Virginia visited White Sands this week and pronounced the dunes the high spot of their trip.
John R. Gunnip and wife of Dallas visited White Sands on Tuesday. Gunnip, an estimator for Texas Pacific Ry in Dallas, said crowds grow as visitors enjoy the sands. Additional guests included Mr. and Mrs. Jorns of Madison Wisconsin, a landscape painter who just completed a three month national parks tour. The Jorns called White Sands a painter’s paradise after a spontaneous Las Cruces stop.
Arrangements are made for the annual convention of New Mexico Funeral Directors and Embalmers in Alamogordo on September 11 and 12 led by president L W Leadinghaus. The State Embalming Board meets September 9 and 10 with exams. About 100 visitors are expected. Speakers include John W. Eberle Chas O Chonan and Miss Tober. Delegates will tour White Sands Dine at Cloudcroft Lodge and enjoy chuck wagon supper and dances.
Richard Bergen of Grover Texas died suddenly from a heart ailment while traveling in the Taos region of New Mexico with his wife Mrs. Bergen. Mrs. Bergen is formerly Blanche Jones of Alamo Gordo and has many friends here.
Dr. and Mrs. E. P. Simms depart tonight for Chicago where Dr. Simms will undergo stomach ulcer surgery at a Chicago hospital. They expect to return in about a month.
Miss Mary Egbert is at the Lordsburg office of the Community Public Service Co this week after leaving here Sunday.
Lake J. Frazier, a Roswell attorney, seeks the Democratic nomination for representative in Congress and appears Thursday to campaign for votes.
Carl Faubion of Tucumcari Quay county clerk visited Wednesday as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for state land commissioner. He has lived in Quay county 32 years and urges strict protection with economical development of New Mexico's natural resources.
The Rev. Leonard C. Whittles has accepted the call to lead First Presbyterian Church of Alamogordo and will arrive in town on September 5.
The annual Tularosa Rodeo directed by Buster Prather and Johnnie Mullens runs Sept 7 and 8 with a 2 PM start each day. Parade at 10 AM features contestants in costume and prizes for best saddle horse and other categories. City officials and a local committee organize events including bronc riding calf roping and wild horse racing plus evening dances.
Ex Governor William H. Murray of Oklahoma addressed about 150 listeners in a courthouse yard Monday night. He spoke from a stout chair with feet on the seat and offered a rambling talk that did not cover expected political issues.
An enthusiastic delegation of the Highway 83 Association met at Elk and elected Lem H Roberts of Lovington president. About 50 to 75 delegates attended and a lunch was served. Gov. Miles sent a letter promising oiling 23 miles from Hope west soon. The group pledged cooperation with the U S Forest Service on Highway 83 from High Rolls to Highway 70. Chambers of Commerce pledged $10 each. volunteers will donate $1. The next meeting is in Cloudcroft on September 23.
Mr and Mrs A C Barton with their daughter Lucille and son Charles returned Sunday from a vacation in California. They visited Laguna Beach to see Mrs Barton's relatives traveled to Catalina Island and attended the Fair at San Francisco. They returned home by Grand Canyon route.
A windfall sale of pears and apples for canning at Grantland Ranch along Old La Luz Road. It lists contact Phone 15 for buyers and indicates a 38 to 35 inch harvest note.
Robt G Gibbons of Camp Marshall near Marysville Kansas and wife Wilma Beauchamp stopped to visit relatives en route to Camp Ord California where Gibbons will join the 54th Infantry of the Regular Army He is a first lieutenant in the Reserves and sought appointment in the Regular Army amid the defense emergency.
Alamogordo seeks business support to festoon for the fair on Sept 13. Mrs G M Hanson, decorations chair, says sacks will be provided for luminaries to light building fronts. Colored lights will adorn the fair pavilion and court house, with banners and flags along the streets.
Mrs Hebbeln presented her piano pupils in recital at the Methodist Church on Monday evening August 26. Performers included Maude Oliver Verna Mae Ruthie Pharris Clementine Gillis G B Oliver Jr Ella Rose Robertson Carlton Webb Henry Oliver Patsy Campbell.
Thos O Conor appeals to Otero County parents to register babies for the Baby Beauty Show at the County Fair. Registration at Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce with baby's name age and address. Three classes under six months six months to one year and one to two years. Each baby photographed. Winners receive enlargements and the first prize in each class enters finals for a $5 cash prize. Neatness and good spins count. elaborate clothes unnecessary.
Verner Clayton of Tularosa and W. A. Gage of Weed and Pinon were named by the State Soil Conservation Committee as supervisors for the Otero Soil Conservation district. They will organize the district setup and call for nominations for three additional supervisors elected by district farmers and ranchers. They will review all applications for range land improvement by the Soil Conservation Service.
Martin Michel has been appointed superintendent of the Otero County Electric Cooperative Association. Construction of a line is in progress.

Campaign note says Governor Miles will visit for a re election event on September 10 as part of his statewide tour. Local organizers expect a rally at a central venue with supporters lining the route and a speech outlining policy priorities.

Judge Moise dismissed Mrs. Lorna Shipley’s suit against Otero County Commissioners and the R L Harrison Co seeking to stop leasing a grader. The case stems from bids on grader purchase and leasing funded by Taylor Grazing Act grazing fees. The parties may appeal with the supreme court review anticipated later.
Sheriff Trujillo and Deputy Parker questioned Artesia youth Trinton De Leon who confessed to Cloudcroft robberies including Dunn's Garage Artesia and Herndon Filling Station Cloudcroft and led to recovered cash. Jose Rodriguez and Benj Rodriguez were jailed for the Red Barn Cloudcroft liquor theft. Jose confessed involving the other boy.
Miss Marjorie Stephens daughter of Mr and Mrs Chester Stephens of Tularosa wed Mr Marvin Coester of Dening at the bride’s Tularosa home Sunday August 25 with Rev Lloyd A Hughes officiating in attendance of family and friends.
Peggy Austin daughter of Mr and Mrs W R Clack and Carlos Wilson irrigation water superintendent of the Town of Alamogordo were married Saturday afternoon August 24 with Justice Geo Abbott presiding.
