Roswell engineers prepare tentative No. 3 sewer district plans for built up areas not now served. The city will survey protests, with a $2.00 per front foot estimate, and double value for long acre lots, based on frontage assessments.
5-Sgt. John Kadingo 30 of Holloman Air Force Base died instantly when his 1949 Chrysler convertible overturned near Holloman Gate on U S Highway 70 about 11:30 p m Tuesday. Deputy Brusuelas cited possible sleep loss at wheel. Kadingo, of Schuylkill Haven PA, was with the 3205 Drone Group. burial planned in St Clair PA Friday Aug 29. This was Otero County's tenth highway fatality this year amid holiday-weekend fears of higher tolls.
Otero County Fair officials release the entertainment schedule for September 19 and 20. Kick-Off Breakfast at Alameda Park at 7:00 a.m. Friday leads to judging at 8:30 a.m. Needlework judging at 3:00 p.m. Thursday. Parade at 11:00 a.m. Friday. Alamogordo Tigers vs Lovington football at Tiger Field 8:00 p.m. Friday. Cowboy dance at the community center 8:30 p.m. Friday. Saturday Pet Show starts 10:00 a.m. Old Timers program with Red Brown at 2:00 p.m. Red Brown shows in the afternoon. Dog Show 6:00 p.m. Bake sale at Fair grounds. Cowboy dance at community center 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
A 39 member Coast and Geodetic Survey team relocates headquarters to Alamogordo for about three months. They will set up to establish precise latitudinal and longitudinal points for the White Sands Proving Grounds and Holloman AFB, often working at night. The crew will bring 20 metal towers previously seen in Lincoln County and place them on Ralph Morgan lots on the highway north of town.
For the second time in two months burglars broke through the door of the Day Warehouse on Rail road Ave but nothing was stolen. Officers believe the intruders were frightened before they could complete the theft.
The completion of the new Spanish Baptist Church at Fourth St and Texas Ave will be marked by an all day service and luncheon this Saturday. Rev. Oscar Hill leads the event with music from guests from Albuquerque Roswell and El Paso and messages by Rev. Jose Rivas Rev. R L Swanner and Rev. Stumph. The building seats 250 and cost 13000 with much labor donated. The old 1904 Second and Pennsylvania structure is sold for 3500 and will become a local chapel.
The County Fair parade plans call for old-time residents pre 1900 to ride on September 19. Parade chairmen C E Anderson L A Hendrix and others guide preparations with White Sands Holloman AF Base and National Guard Battery expected to participate. Over 100 farm tractors and implements are anticipated, parade starts 10 30 am from 6th Street and New York Ave, route to be set at September 5 meeting, ending at the fair grounds north of town.
Anita Blair won the Democratic nomination for Texas state representative from El Paso County, defeating W. C. Wolverton 4977 to 4067 in a bitter Saturday primary. The blind former Alamogordo resident rose to national note as the first blind woman elected to a state legislature.
The Greggersons of El Paso renowned square dancers will provide exhibition numbers at La Luz Fiesta on August 30. They also host a Carrizo festival this weekend and operate a summer square dance camp in the Ruidoso area, sending teams to La Luz.
Plans for La Luz Fiesta Saturday August 30 were announced by Mrs. Jack Hawkins. Events start at 2 00 p m with three talent shows at 2 30 4 00 and 5 30 p m, plus games prizes bazaars and dances at La Luz school ground to raise funds for water system expansion.
C. Bishop Bilbo of Alamogordo painted Timida Con Flores de Mescal, one of 200 New Mexico works chosen by an art jury for the 39th Annual Museum of New Mexico Exhibit in Santa Fe. The paintings will later tour to Albuquerque. Mrs. Bilbo, wife of Ellis Bilbo, was the sole Otero County artist represented.
Juan Uranga 60 confessed to killing Frank Guerra in Las Cruces on August 19. District Attorney Tom Campbell predicts Uranga will be convicted of first degree murder. Guerra, a former Tul arosa and Alamogordo boy, died after being shot following a three month feud that began with a fist fight. Alejandro Guerra of Alamogordo is Guerra’s father.
The city commissioners rejected an $8 000 offer to buy 642 acres of water rights on the former Hardcastle place in La Luz canyon. The owner Varbel would keep land and improvements. City Manager Ruiz urged delaying such purchases until a broader water rights program is planned.
Mail routes in Alamogordo are reorganized to add 37 blocks to city delivery and shift 18 blocks from mounted to foot delivery. Beginning Thursday August 28, deliveries will occur in the morning but full noon delivery cannot be guaranteed due to an eight hour route schedule. Rural boxes should be curbside with name and number, set away from parking, and change of address cards must be left at the Post Office.
The government seeks to condemn about 18 500 acres in Otero County for the Guadalupe Gunnery Range. The action continues prior condemnation proceedings. The sole known interested party is E G Levick of Roswell.
Community Concert Association officials announced team captains across Alamogordo Holloman AFB and neighboring communities for the upcoming membership drive. The September 8 kickoff barbecue and September 9 10 renewal push lead to a September 10 house to house canvass, with reservations due by September 3.
The New Mexico School for the Blind announces the opening on Monday September 8. Superintendent Neal F. Quimby leads a new term with staff including Sarah Barber secretary Bertha Chamberlin matron and a long list of teachers and housemothers.
Funeral services for Harvey James Attaway were held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Mullins-O'Dell chapel with burial in Monte Vista cemetery. Attaway, longtime resident of Douglas and Alamagordo, died at his home after a three week illness. He leaves a widow Fiona Belle Witte and two daughters, plus his mother, brothers, sisters, and six grandchildren.
Adults interested in night college classes will meet Friday September fifth at 7 30 p m in the old high school auditorium to begin the sixth year of the program. Past classes carried college credit from New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts and enrollment neared 100 last year with similar numbers expected.
The Alamogordo Women's Club Education and Americanism committee plans a Friday August 29 canvass from 9 30 to 11 00 am to collect names addresses and phone numbers of eligible voters and inform on registration. Partners include White Knights and Radio KALG with Wayne Phelps coordinating A 10 member committee led by Dick McAlpine will cover city sectors The drive aims to boost turnout with baby sitting and transport aid on election day and urges unregistered voters to register by October 6
Mr and Mrs F E McMurry traveled from 1123 Michigan Avenue to Sentinel Oklahoma for funeral services of Dr James F McMurry a prominent Sentinel physician and surgeon who died at 49 after months of leukemia. Services were at First Methodist Church August 14. He helped establish MecMurry Stowers hospital and led local medical and civic groups. Contributions were asked for leukemia research.
Judge W. T. Scoggin of the Third Judicial District will return to Las Cruces this week after a rapid recovery from a serious illness treated in an El Paso hospital. District Attorney Tom Campbell said Scoggin hopes to resume court duties soon, though a grand jury in Otero County could not sit.
Las Cruces district attorney says a 1951 New Mexico statute allows civilians living on Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands Proving Grounds to register and vote if Holloman is their sole residence. The rule excludes military residents of the base.
Community Public Service Co. enlarges First St. circuit with 7200 volt lines replacing 2400 volt ones. Ray Dean says the upgrade will allow a future 7200 volt residential circuit and separate commercial line, reducing inter circuit interference. Project from the Reclamation substation to the cemetery with taller poles and new street lighting, costing about $21,000.
The Cloudcroft Ropers Club sponsors a Kids Rodeo at Cloudcroft Arena on Saturday and Sunday August 30 31 with events for ages 1 to 15. Entries close Friday noon August 30. Director Troy Boykin and announcer Jack Elles lead events including Clover Leaf Barrel Race Calf Riding Team Ribbon Roping Bareback Saddle Race and Breakaway Roping. Awards will be given. Local businesses and Alamogordo contributors support the event.
Eighteen residents in the Block 35 area bounded by 3rd and 4th Streets and Virginia and Texas Avenues petitioned the city commission to investigate Sacramento Gas Corp for failing to install a gas line. Vel M. Lane said facilities were not available. City Manager said no deposits had been made for service. Mayor pro tem urged petitioners to offer deposits for gas meters.
A dinner gathering of the Otero County Democratic Central Committee and county candidates met at the Ship Ahoy Cafe in Tularosa last Friday night serving 38 plates. Walter Ray, the county chairman, led the session and solicited campaign suggestions from candidates and precinct chairmen. Ray, running for the Democratic National Convention, spoke on the convention and predicted victory for the Democratic presidential and vice presidential nominees Adlai Stevenson and Sparkman.
