Eber McKinley greeted us with desire for a page ad in the first daily edition. Reactions varied from gratitude to cautious optimism as Alamogordo nears the daily publication milestone. We plan to remind Eber of his commitment later.
W Barney Caton praises eloquence and reports Rotary Tuesday speech. Lions and Rotary to meet next Wednesday at 12 05 in the Methodist church to hear Bishop Angie Smith. Bishop Smith starts revival with Rev H H Allens congregation on Sunday. F E Greenwood warns city commission Tuesday about fire safety and calls for inspections of wiring furnaces and heating. United Fund Drive organized and set to begin late next month with emphasis on full participation and prior year gifts.
Residents argue that approving 200 more Wherry project housing for military families should place them in Alamogordo instead of elsewhere. They commend the military for seeking housing but urge civic integration for the occupants and the town.
Curriculum coordinator R. H. Robbins today corrected rumors that Alamogordo schools would only be in session Monday morning. He stated that all schools will hold classes throughout the day on Monday.
Approval for 200 additional Wherry Housing units at Holloman has been granted to HADC. Jeremiah Foley, in Baltimore, will return tonight with final details. Col. A McEwen said Foley reported the approval and said the units will likely adjoin the existing project though dates and investment remain undetermined.
Lieutenant Colonel John P. Stapp, chief of Holloman's Aero-Medical Field Laboratory, received the Air Power Award for Science from the Air Force Association. The citation lauded his high speed sled research and personal risk in advancing U S air power. The dinner at Omaha featured Jimmy Doolittle presenting the award.
P R Burn Construction Co of Las Cruces won the contract to enlarge the city sewage disposal system with a low bid of 104 500 Tuesday night. Other bids were 137 658 from Allison and Haney and 106 216 from E M Silver Co. Engineer W F Turney endorsed the bid as satisfactory, noting Burn’s good reputation and prior work with the city. Work to nearly double capacity will start immediately, with the new unit to the south of the present plant and a fresh water line possibly added as extra work.
The Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce sponsors a guided Sept 12 motor caravan to Dog Canyon. Fifty horses await at the canyon mouth for the bluff trail, with a special tour price of 9 dollars per person including horse rental.
The Western Area Unit Allowance Instructional Conference gathered at Holloman Air Development Center with attendees from ARDC Headquarters Kirtland Edwards Edwards and Lackland bases and over 125 Holloman property officers. The session, led by C B McCulloch and Colonel McEwen, focused on revised reporting procedures for the annual unit allowance report due October 1.
Alex Krivokopich arrives in Cloudcroft to take the role of municipal school superintendent with his wife and four year old daughter Janice. He comes from Cliff New Mexico where he led the high school as principal and holds BA and MA degrees from New Mexico A and M College. He served 15 months in the South Pacific during World War II. He announced that teachers for the coming year are hired and will arrive before September 7 the opening date.
W F Turney Santa Fe engineer told the city commission that completion is near with a August 28 deadline. Concrete lining of two 40 million gallon tanks and the floor are finished. The filtration plant costing about 104000 should be done by November 1 with open house suggested for citizens. Pipelines into canyon areas are complete.
Police Chief Clarence Walter traveled to Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque to join a safety conference. The Governor's Safety Council will hold a joint session at 2 p.m. with military safety officials present.
The Civil Aeronautics Board rejected a petition by Las Cruces and the Mesilla Valley Chamber of Commerce seeking continued Continental Airlines service. It ruled service to Las Cruces and Holloman and Lampgordo impractical due to White Sands Proving Grounds region operations and national defense considerations favoring Alamogordo service.
Secretary of the Air Force Harold E. Talbott announces a six month test enabling Air Force personnel to be paid twice monthly starting in October. The change aims to reduce loans, improve recruiting and stabilize base commerce with two paydays each month.
The State Highway Patrol in this county narrates a string of crashes from rains. Capt. Tafoya and Parolman Ly ing describe minimal sleep since reports began Saturday night. A La Luz man Brazier crashed into Rafey in Cloudcroft, injuring none seriously and Brazier facing reckless driving charges. Augusta Grabbe of Alamogordo was seriously hurt in a three car collision on Highway 70. Her car was driven by her son, R. L. Grabbe, with other drivers named as Walter Ruscik and Quinie N. Flint. A 20 ton army truck rolled on Highway 54 near the New Mexico border, driver Welbert Jones of Fort Bliss injured. Another wreck near Tularosa involved Robert Carter of Walker Air Force Base after a puddle and soft shoulder. The patrol notes their radio system is just now cooling off.
Mrs. Juanita Cardiel aged 72 died at her home in Alamogordo after a residence there of 26 years. Rosary was said Wednesday night and the Immaculate Conception Church rites were led by Rev. James B. Hay. Burial followed in the Catholic cemetery. Survivors include son Florentino C. Montanez of Morenci Arizona two daughters Helen M. Conde Alamogordo Paula M Carrera of Mexico and four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
The United Fund Drive will run September 30 to October 10 in Alamogordo with H G OʼDell as general chairman and Bob Hoffman as president. Seven agencies will participate including Red Cross USC Boy Scouts Girl Scouts Salvation Army Heart Fund and Cancer Fund. A kickoff football game bazaars dances and shows are planned as fundraisers with Dallas staff assisting but all receipts stay in Alamogordo.
A youth directed revival opens September 5 at the First Baptist Church, continuing through September 12. Weston Ware of Harlingen Texas will be youth pastor and Richard Hall of Houston Texas will lead the music. Services start 7 30 each night with several social events planned and to be announced.
A three car collision at 10 15 Tuesday night on highway 70 54 south of the city left two people with minor injuries. Peggy L Nickles of Alamogordo and Tc Sgt Larry Groach of Holloman Air Force Base were treated and released. Roger Quisenberry of El Paso drove a Plymouth which was struck after a U turn by Nickles in a Dodge. Jack Hubert of Holloman was involved when his Oldsmobile hit the Plymouth Groach was a passenger.
The city commission voted to form a citizens advisory committee after a August meeting of builders and civic leaders. Mayor Mullins named nine initial members and the panel grew to 11 with additional nominees. The board, nonbinding and administrative, will aid in study tasks and will be chaired within city government.
