The midyear economic report and the Federal Trade Commission warn that four firms produce over 75 percent of 121 basic commodities and three corporations account for 67 percent of farm machinery. Mergers and price fixing threaten small businesses and consumers, risking government intervention.
Census bureau data from the agriculture department show farm ownership shifting toward larger operations. More than half of all farm land sits in farms over 500 acres and 40 percent lies in farms over 1000 acres, with absentee or corporate ownership growing alongside mechanization and economic pressures.
Preparations aim to feed three to four thousand at a free barbecue at James Canyon picnic grounds two miles west of Mayhill on Tuesday August 31. Organizers from Artesia Alamogordo Tularosa Cloudcroft Mayhill and other Route 83 communities raise funds donate beeves and coordinate with chambers of commerce officials. Gov Mabry is slated to give the principal address and the program starts at 11 am with music. barbecue service begins at 1 pm prepared by Cara and Loyd Curtis.

About 5 percent of farms average over 10 000 dollars in value, 25 000 farms at 40 000 dollars, and 5 000 farms from 100 000 to 1 000 000 dollars. Large farms are geographically highest in the West and Far West, but production value is greatest in the Corn Belt.
Economists question when government will move to regulate in the public interest as monopolies raid the agricultural land market, threatening small farmers and the public. If monopolies persist, direct regulation may come soon.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hightower returned Monday from Frederick Oklahoma where they attended business matters for a week. They were joined by Mr. and Mrs. Paul E Long who reports a deal with A L Dunn to take over the Otero and Lincoln County agency for the Texas Company on September 1.
Registration for Selective Service starts August 30 and runs through September 18 for men ages 18 to 25 including veterans. Col. Russell C. Charlton and Uel M. Lane discussed appointments with local boards in Otero County. Registration details cover Mescalero Indians at the Agency office and others at Alamogordo.
Mrs. Jesse Treadaway of Alamogordo high school attends Las Cruces meetings for the state vocational home economics conference under Miss Mary Gillispie. Next week she will visit prospective pupils to organize this year's work and plan an adult or out of school youth class for early fall.
The Otero County School Bus Drivers' Association met in the county superintendent's office on Saturday August 21 with J T Baldonado presiding. New officers are Don Taylor president Happy Hathcock vice president and Mrs Mary Weaver secretary. The next meeting is October 2 in the superintendent's office.
Mrs. Jackie Fall Hase 30 of El Paso died suddenly in an El Paso hospital Monday. Born in Alamogordo she moved to El Paso in 1920 and lived there since. She attended Austin High and the University of Arizona. Survived by husband Ernest A. Hase two sons George and Ernest mother Mrs. George Millar sister Miss Anna Millar and sister Mrs Phillip Bethune of Ft Knox Ky. Granddaughter of the late Albert B Fall.
The Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce announces for the Otero County Fair from September 9 to 12 a breakfast at Alameda Park, a 6 a.m. ham and egg service, a 70 cent price, and an 10:30 opening parade with bands floats and school entries. Rodeo events at Prather arena begin at 7:45 with square horseback dances, a ladies musical chair race offering a 225 saddle prize, four rodeo performances totaling 1000 added money, and daily showtimes 2 p.m. Friday 7:45 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. A Friday football game features Alamo Tigers versus Capitan Tigers. Evenings feature dances at the Community Center Building under Harold ODell.
Irving Seligman announces the Otero County Fair Kids Pet Show with prizes for cutest, most unusual, best named, ugliest yet sweet, and youngest contestant. A Grand Prize silver cup donated by Alamogordo Men’s Store will be awarded. Entry open to under 15. pets may include dogs cats porcupines skunks chipmunks and more.
Gerald Carter's Hawaiian Air Force Pacific champs shut out Neal league stars 14 to 2 as Hal James dominates on the mound with a 29 win pace. Ben Misquez starts for the Neals until relieved by Candelario. Jim Paternoster stays to pitch for El Paso. Sid Searcy Memorial Trophy presented to Henrys as season closes.
Inter American delegates from a two week conference on renewable resources tour a U S soil conservation district near Denver on September 11. They view erosion problems and prevention methods on farms and ranches with multilingual guides and a final stop at Walter Schubarth’s farm showcasing terraced fields and gully control.
The Alamogordo Public School staff is set for the opening of school on Monday August 30 with late additions Miss Bonnie Laurie Johnston first grade Indiana Avenue School and Mrs Kathryn Hamilton second grade East Building. High School enrollment is on schedule with Seniors and Juniors enrolled Monday Tuesday, Sophomores Wednesday, and Freshmen and Eighth Grades enrollment on Thursday. A regular faculty meeting is planned Friday at 10:00 A M for teachers janitors administrators and board members.
Grade schoolers from First through Seventh grade enroll Monday August 30 at Alamogordo schools. Students check out books before going home and classes begin Tuesday. First Grade accepts children six by January 1 with a $1 workbook fee. First graders enroll at Dud y and Indiana Avenue schools.
A teen age and college student going away dance is planned for Friday night August 27 at the Community Center. On Saturday night a western cowboy dance will feature Jesse Mitchell and his Southwesterner band.
Marcial Sanchez was elected Democratic Precinct Vice Chairman for B and D voting districts in Precinct No 1 Alamogordo at a Tuesday meeting. L H Hightower led the session calling for a larger organization with about 30 voters present and plans to register unregistered residents ahead of the November 2 election.
Charlies Bonnell and Walter Sullivent opened the Alamo Tire Service station north of Alamo Gordo on Highways 54 70 this week. The shop specializes in vulcanizing tire repair and sales, handling Armstrong tires and tubes and Conoco products. Bonnell remains Continental Oil Co. agent for the territory, with Sullivent actively operating the station.
Mr and Mrs Irvin Menger have returned from a two weeks trip through Texas and Oklahoma and visited relatives in Missouri.

The second annual Champion ship Steer Roping set for Hollywood Park in Ruidoso on August 28 and 29 with two daily 2 00 pm ropings. Twenty top steer ropers from around the world compete for 3000 in prizes with a 40 30 20 10 split. Athletic Director Rolla Buck and coach Ralph McGuire direct the 1948 Alamo High Tiger football squad in early practice. Nine returning lettermen anchor the varsity with several backs sidelined. junior high and freshmen teams prepare for a schedule including Deming, Tularosa, and Cloudcroft games.
Ranchers in southern Otero County rejected a proposed Air Force range co use near Walker Base Roswell as inadequate compensation and access. Air Force will continue bombing practice while gunnery and final settlements await later talks with Lt Col Edward Perry and base command.
Mrs Lot tie Norton hosts guests including her mother Mrs H A Hooks of Houston. Also visiting are Miss Patsy Murphy and Mr and Mrs Lee De Hay and daughter Tharon. De Hay and Murphy are Norton nieces en route from Houston to California to visit relatives.
