The newly appointed zoning commission met Tuesday with most members present. They defined six property classes from single family homes to industrial uses and outlined the plan to map classifications and issue zoning recommendations for Town Board approval.
Funeral services for Sherman Sundayman held Friday at the Protestant Mission in Mescalero New Mexico with Chaplain Graves of Ruidoso and Wendell Chino officiating assisted by the American Legion. He died Tuesday in an Albuquerque hospital. Interment followed at the Indian Cemetery beside his mother. He was a Marine veteran of World War II and left behind his father Glen Sundayman two brothers and several half siblings. He was a talented student and shop worker and a noted solo dancer from childhood.
The New Mexico Cattle Growers Association holds its Third Quarterly meeting in Hot Springs September 9 and 10. G. W. Evans says experts will discuss livestock freight discrimination with P. W. Cockerill and H. C. King as speakers. John F. Simms Jr. and Albert K. Mitchell also scheduled to attend the program.
Twelve firms show interest in building 350 dwellings at Holloman Air Force Base under the Wherry bill. Proposals are sealed and set to open September 5. Homes will be 1 to 4 bedrooms with modern utilities and central heating, aimed primarily for military personnel.
Billy Hamilton son of Mr and Mrs Hamilton of Michigan Ave is home after completing ROTC training camp at Temple Texas He will return to NM MI at Roswell on September 5 to complete his junior college training there
Otero County Superintendent Mrs Frances Godley announces the 1949 1950 faculty for Otero County schools. The list includes La Luz High Rolls Mescalero Cloudcroft Mayhill Orogrande Pinon and Cox Ranch assignments with principals and coaches named.
Champions of Tularosa shut out the local All Star Softballers 2 to 0 in the finals of the Las Cruces tournament. Marrujo and Sanchez scored as Candelaria held the opponents to two hits. LCS All Stars twice used miscues to fall short against strong pitching.
Alamogordo announces staff for 1940s schools led by W Barnie Caton. The list covers administration high school and elementary faculties including principals Ruth Meeks and Raymond Westfall and numerous teachers, librarians, custodians, and bus drivers across Central Dudley East Indiana HAFB and Reserve locations.
Supt W Barnie Caton announces a 9 00 to 9 45 coffee social in the Home Economics department Friday August 26 prior to a ten o'clock faculty meeting. The event aims to help new teachers meet veteran staff and invites all school board members and spouses.
M R Prestridge returned from a El Paso labor conference and announced that New Mexico and Arizona wage contracts expiring Aug 31 are extended contingent on lumber prices. Negotiations will reopen if prices rise. Mill may move to California if demands exceed capacity. The firm employs about 215 with average wages around 1.63 dollars per hour.
Alamo Drug won 6 to 5 in eight innings as Ross drove in the deciding run after a tight Pacific Coast League style night. Bru nells tied it with a four run burst in the fifth, while Minter and Marino split pitching duties for the foes. Mescalero crushed the Lions 16 to 4 behind LaRose and Giza’s hurling.
Miss Helen Higgason died recently near Independence Missouri. She taught in Independence and Ysleta and Alamogordo schools, specialized in English and Spanish, and homesteaded land south of Alamogordo. She leaves two sisters and a niece.
Friends in Las Cruces and Tularosa report the birth of a son to Capt. and Mrs. Alonzo J. Baird at Fort Worth. Capt. Baird is the son of the late Eu gene and Mrs. Baird of Alamogordo and serves as Infantry Advisor in the National Guard.
The schedule lists games for Las Cruces High School Deming Santa Rosa Hatch Hot Springs Artesia Silver City Hurley Anthony and Tulaorsa with venues marked Here There or El Paso Jefferson. Dates span September to November including nine Friday games and one Saturday contest.
Alamo Vets win their second in a row beating Carlsbad Vets 7 to 4 despite Carlsbad outhitting 10 to 8. Zuniga hit a grand slam in the second, no other details given, and Callaso, Monroy, and Fuentes contributed for Alamo with key hits and a late triple by Monroy. Callaso and M Melon pitched six and three innings respectively while Deporto started for Carlsbad.
New Mexico law mandates that children aged 6 to 16 attend public school for the weeks the district is in session. Admission is allowed if a child is 6 on or before January 1 following the start of the school year.
Sheriff Wayne McCommis found Grace Romero, 15, at relatives’ home in Tularosa after a search began following her mother Mrs Grace Romero of 100 First St reported she had left with a packed suitcase on Saturday night August 14. Romero said the girl left after a quarrel and note saying she planned to go to Los Angeles. The girl reportedly headed straight to an uncle’s home in Tularosa.
Alamogordo Lions Club releases detailed plans for the Ranch Hands Rodeo tied to the 1949 Otero County Fair. The event runs September 16 to 18 with ten competitions, USO soldier events, and a $1150 prize pool. Tournament Queen chosen by ticket sales. caravan, square dance team and queen candidates invited to volunteer.
Alamogordo high officials report some juniors and seniors have yet to register as directed last week. Superintendent W Barnie Caton urges all students to register by week end to enter classes Monday August 29.
Fair officials report 94 percent booth designation with 16 remaining likely to sell before September 16 17 18. The association owns a new $850 kiddie ride from Hutchinson Kansas and will run carnival concessions through clubs. Chito Sanchez operates a roller rink on a portable platform, and W M Dyer of Alamogordo enters a quarterhorse mare and colt in the Horse Division.
Retailers in Otero County report June 1949 sales well above June 1948 figures. Building materials dealers up more than sixfold, subsistence group stores and lodging sectors over double previous year, automotive and furniture up 12 and 2 percent, while apparel and other retail fell 38 percent.
Bids for about 70 family quarters at Holloman Air Force Base will be reopened September 15 due to technicalities. The $1 million project covers construction on base for officers and non commissioned officers first three grades with Pecos Valley Construction Co. of El Paso handling utilities on a 120 day schedule.
State Game Department and Forest Service officials say there will be no doe season in the Sacramento Mountains after a two day survey. They saw about 100 deer and many bucks and noted good hatch prospects with five hens and 48 young reported.
Sam Stratton to assist Rolla Buck in football for the upcoming season. A recent Eastern New Mexico College graduate, Stratton starred in football and especially basketball, part of the ENMU team that won the New Mexico Conference and earned a trip to the NAIB Conference in Kansas City.
The Lions and Rotary team played to a 16 16 tie amid a circus like clash. Spectators laughed at disappearing uniforms as Lions and Rotarians competed in a two hour event. In the nightcap the Las Cruces DeMolays fell to the local DeMolays 5 to 4 in nine innings with Abbey delivering the decisive RBI in the ninth.
