Aug 21 report from Washington describes a revival like atmosphere as the New Deal takes root. Officials and advisers blend pragmatism with fervor, hoping to reshape business and society before the next election, with some fearing dire consequences if it fails.
Mrs. J. E. Prather known as Mammy Prather dies at 7 a m on New York avenue after months of illness. A 53 year old pioneer ranch woman active in Methodist church and civic life in Alamogordo and El Paso connections. Survived by two sons Owen and John Prather a daughter Mrs J H Goodman and many grandchildren. Funeral held at 5 30 p m Thursday at the house.
About 250 people have registered with the re employment committee at the Town Office. Registrations will continue for ten days to two weeks in Tulare sa and Cloudcroft to supply labor for road and public works projects. W J Keeney, state director, says only Otero County residents may register locally or elsewhere within the county.

A Saturday night mass meeting in Alamogordo's High School auditorium drew several hundred residents from across the town to hear discussions of the National Recovery Administration. Judge Elfers of El Paso delivered the keynote, outlining the causes of the depression and how the NRA aims to restore employment and confidence.
Lovel G. Blevins died at the Albuquerque Veterans Hospital Monday August 21 1933 after a valiant battle. A World War veteran he served fourteen months overseas as a first class private in Company E 350th Infantry. Born January 29 1896 in Missouri he moved to New Mexico in 1921 and married Winnie May Waldrip in 1922. Survived by widow one daughter Margaret 9 two sons none listed three brothers and a sister the funeral was held at Geren Lendinghous chapel with American Legion pallbearers and burial at La Luz.
The NRA advisory committee will meet Monday to consider a large 6 by 12 foot sign board bearing NRA members initials. Costs would be shared by signing members with contributions not to exceed 50 percent per name, likely less. Merchants and employers considering joining are asked for feedback before Monday.
The News Herald reports continued unusual produce from the F. H. Flowers garden in College Addition. A double squash was noted last week and this week a double cucumber is displayed at the Town office, showcasing twin vegetables from the Flowers plot.
S Strickland works this week to pick tentative winter camps for the CCC forces. The President’s Civilian Conservation Corps will continue for six more months. Army officers and forest officials will select camps, with announcements due next week.
Ed Pierson, Camp F-17 superintendent, reported a lioness with two cubs sighted at the mouth of Gililland Canyon near the Sacramento River. Wm. Mullens, hunter, went to Magdalena to bring his lion dogs and a hunt is believed to be ongoing to capture the lioness, with dogs known to trail after snow crust.
Paul G. Redington and John Gatlin led a gathering at the Shelton range to discuss deer congestion and adopt measures soon. Elliott Barber and Rossa Malone joined with L. H. Laney Fred Arthur and Charles Pell as representatives of state and federal game services. Mr. Shelton attended, recently arriving from Amarillo. Redington, formerly Regional Forester, recalled his predecessor Frank C. Pooler.
Local game enthusiasts expect to attend the state meeting in Carlsbad on September 3. The event brings together players and organizers from across the region to discuss schedules and rules.
Camp F16 on the Sacramento renamed Stephen B. Elkins and Camp F-17 at Raton renamed Saturnino Baca under a policy to name conservation camps for notable men. Elkins, born 1841 in Ohio, became a lawyer, Civil War captain, mining and stock-raising financier, NM delegate to Congress, later West Virginia figure.
Miss Frances Neve aged 15 died at 11 a m in an El Paso hospital after blood poisoning from a lip scratch last week. She was daughter of Mrs W A Neve and survived by four younger sisters. granddaughter of Mr G E F Moffett of this city. Body to be brought home on tonight's train. funeral arrangements not announced. Community shocked by her passing and described as a lovely, greatly beloved young woman.
Mrs. Jimmy Taylor received surgery on Wednesday while Jackie Holloman had a tonsillectomy on Tuesday. Miss Mabel Daugherty had a Tuesday tonsillectomy and Oliver Lee Jr. welcomed a son born August 13. A Bake Sale by Pres. Ladies' Aid is set for August 26 at Grooms Market at 2:50 PM.
Saturnino Baca born November 29 1830 in Valencia County New Mexico emerged as a pivotal figure in Lincoln county shaping its creation He served in the territorial legislature in 1864 authoring the bill that formed Lincoln county later holding roles as probate judge sheriff and county commissioner He fought in the Lincoln County War and was linked to Kit Carson as a 1st Lieutenant then Captain His legacy includes advocating the county name Lincoln in honor of a fallen president.
Governor Arthur Seligman proclaims Monday August 16 1983 as Labor Day a legal holiday in New Mexico and urges patriotic speeches supporting the National Recovery Act and Blue Eagle enlistment in the final battle against depression.
The NRA advisory committee and officers meet at Town Hall to operate as a Bureau of Information on August 28. Employers may present questions if they cannot meet the Blue Eagle code, with unresolved issues sent to the state committee for final decision.
The historic St Francis church in Tularosa held a blessing ceremony for a new pipe organ donated by Mrs G A Breckheimer of Cloudcroft in memory of her late husband. Bishop Anthony J Schuler officiated with support from Rev David Kirgan Rev Augustin Pozos and Rev Jose Albial. The organ features electric power and fifteen automatic sacred rolls, a unique instrument in the region.
Tony Posey of Mayhill is jailed on first degree murder charges after he shot Newt Pendergrast 55 at the latter’s home near Mayhill Tuesday night August 22. Posey surrendered within 24 hours as witnesses described a confrontation over an axe and a pistol. Funeral services for Pendergrast were held Wednesday with Posey to face preliminary hearing next Tuesday before Justice Barringer.
Revival meetings expand with Pinon services led by J D Jeffcoat and The Elkins drawing attendees from El Paso Las Cruces Las Vegas and beyond. A Weed revival starts next Saturday night and runs two weeks conducted by Bro Montgomery and Tice Elkins inviting all to camp and attend.
The adjourned meeting of the Game Protective Association will be held in Alamogordo on Friday night. Officers for the coming year will be elected and delegates to the State G P A meeting at Carlibal September 4 5 will be chosen. Ward G Curtis secretary.
Pastor L. L. Thurston invites fellowship with 10 am Sunday school for all ages and 11 am worship with special music and a sermon. An opportunity to join the church is offered. 6:45 pm Young People's service. Wednesday prayer meeting is canceled in favor of the Baptist church gathering.
