A Texas bandit rode into Alamogordo last week then tricked J N McFate’s livery into hiring a team. He and a companion fled north on August 10 after taking two black horses and Guns from Sacramento range camps. McFate offers a reward for recovery and capture.
The Alamogordo public schools begin the fall and winter term on Monday September 2 with Prof E R Graham as superintendent and Mrs A Maupin as principal of the American school. Teachers include Miss Helen Higgison Miss Emma B Yard Miss Emma Duffy Miss Olive Rapier Miss Lena Eldridge and Miss Etta Shephard. In the Mexican school J M Blazer is principal assisted by Miss Daisy Murphy with Miss Eva Felton directing the kindergarten.
Tuesday evening about 9 o'clock Mounted Policeman Dudley and a deputy sheriff captured in the railroad yards at Alamogordo two Mexicans answering descriptions of men wanted for the murder of a Mexican in Torrance county. The suspects showed a disposition to resist capture and Dudley fired three shots before their surrender. They were handcuffed and taken to the jail to await officers from Torrance county for identification.

A Sunday morning blaze at Watson & Karr on New York avenue was fought quickly by a two-line volunteer brigade within two minutes of the alarm. Damages total about 600 dollars with 300 to the building owned by Oliver Lee and 200 to Watson’s insured goods. 100 uninsured in Fridley’s upstairs rooms. Pearl Watson escaped smoke and notified the street. Fire started from an overheated stove pipe igniting ceiling paper. wind risked wider destruction.
