The first general rain in months fell from Friday to Monday, totaling 1.73 inches with slow absorption. Rains spread across the Southwest, with heavier rainfall south of Alamogordo causing floods that washed out roads near Valmont and stranded cars and tourists until help arrived.
Mrs. Wm. Bacon of Dallas reports Texas women’s clubs back a plan to turn Cloudcroft into a summer Chautauqua center. If carried out the event would run several weeks yearly and feature eminent platform lights, possibly rivaling New York’s Chautauqua. The proposal gains support from E P S W officials and lodge proprietor M B Hutchings.
The Alamogordo Rotary Luncheon praised the Boy Scout movement and the Hi Y organization pledging support. Supt. Jas G. Chapman urged Rotary backing and noted a Hi Y organizer will visit in September. Vice President D H Henry spoke on banking urging prompt debt payment and citing Japan’s annual settlement to curb debt. The club unanimously endorsed the Scout and His organizations.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Callens and Earliren returned Tuesday from a visit with relatives in Roswell. Callens reports his ailing father is much better. He notes Pecos Valley has a real commercial oil field after 11 years of drilling and expects development of a large field in the future.
Secretary A F Menger reports Alamogordo school census shows 416 boys and 455 girls ages 5 to 21 for the current year. The figure is down from last year due to families moving away and some duplication in prior counts.
United States of America v John and Tom Prather heard by U S Commissioner A F Menger. Complaining witness A A Trammel left the charge of intimidation of a homesteader and threats of personal violence after hearing part of the evidence. The issue arose from fence lines and range friction.
New York August 21 loaded with 24000 letters and 575 pounds a five day test air mail express begins with daily west and eastbound flights from New York and San Francisco. Night refueling stops planned at Cleveland Chicago Omaha Cheyenne Salt Lake City and Reno. Postage during test set at two cents per ounce with letters marked via air mail.
Carl C. Magee editor of the New Mexico State Tribune Albuquerque was bound over in district court Santa Fe to await grand jury action. He is charged with libeling C J Roberts former state supreme court justice through an editorial alleging Roberts and two others participated in a decision that voided many votes in an election contest Magee furnished bond.
Mrs Grace Melaven the United States only female game warden toured Alamogordo and Lincoln county from Santa Fe on an inspection trip. She approved transferring 75 wild turkeys from Lincoln to Pecos forest and arranged fish fry stocking in Lincoln streams. She discussed hiring a paid deputy warden for the Sacramento mountains and signaled approval for full time employment.
Governor J. F. Hinkle says the gasoline price battle nationwide pits big companies against independents and may harm the people. He notes he has no authority to fix commodity prices and warns independent firms could be forced out of business.
Alamogordo dispatch reports Ranger Ray E. King in the area for several days noting improved grazing after heavy rains. Deputy Forest Supervisor Wm. J. Anderson and Ranger John H. Mims are also in town as rains spread over Guadalupe and Sacramento divisions boosting range conditions. Washington dispatch says President Coolidge may recognize the Mexican government soon with a statement from Secretary of State Hughes after Warren and Payne report.
Members of the Community Choral Society met at the Schlemmers home to set activities for September. A production like Cherry Blossom is planned and Mr. Herron will lead chorus work with earlier sessions for younger singers. The group aims to study good music and invites interested vocalists to join with nominal dues.
Heavy rains last Friday and Saturday washed out a long stretch of the road below Valmont. The flood eroded the grade leaving mud and debris and forcing a five mile detour. Road crews are repairing the washout and expect to restore good traffic conditions soon.
Local pear growers cooperate to ship pears in car lots under supervision by County Agent Ware. The pears will be graded and packed in a shed behind the Oasis hotel, using a refrigerator car for transport. Bartlett pears are noted as especially desirable in the area.
Vocational Institute report shows home poultry projects in Alamagordo yielding profit over feed and labor. Data cover Anconas and Rhode Island Reds with 4823 eggs total, 16.5 eggs per month per hen, 20.3 cents per dozen production, and labor income per hen averaging 97 cents.
Ed Harrington, traveling agent for Continental Oil Co., has bought land between the Magnolia and Continental tank stations in Alamogordo. He will build an independent station to distribute oil in the trade for Alamogordo and nearby areas. Construction on the foundation for a large tank has begun.
Merced Martinez of Penasco was fined 25 dollars and court costs after burning brush on land he cleared for cultivation in Picuris Canyon, Carson National Forest. Forest rangers reported sparking caused a small fire. judge later doubled the fine to 26 dollars with about 40 dollars in costs and warned about forest fire dangers.
J H Elan reports two properties sold in Alamogordo over the past week. J T Stair bought the P W Hickson residence and lots on 10th Street while C M Castro purchased the Mrs S L Russell house on 8th Street.
The Taxpayers' Association of New Mexico notes the Western States Taxpayers' Association formed in Salt Lake City in June. Rudolph Kuchler, Nevada or Arizona official, serves as president with A C Rees as secretary. The group spans eleven states to promote efficient public spending and public accountability through publicity and citizen participation.
State Land Commissioner Justiano Baca and chief clerk A Digneo visited Alamogordo last Monday and sold 160 acres of timber in Penasco canyon below the Fairchild ranger station. Southwest Lumber Co. bought 475000 feet B M of timber, with Forest Service supervision of cutting, after a Saturday night storm delayed travel.
Mrs. E F Cadwallader of Mountain Park died at the Homan Sanatorium El Paso last Friday at age 79 after a year long illness from influenza and tuberculosis. She had lived in Mountain Park twenty years and leaves a husband three sons Edwin Jay Mark and a daughter Mrs Rawlins of El Paso plus grandchildren and other relatives.
Miss Ethel Powers and Mr. George Putnam were married Sunday in Alamogordo by Justice W. K. Stalcup. The accord marks the couple's first public acknowledgment as spouses in the region.
Miss Dottie Franks of Tularosa and Mr. Carl F. Steffey of Gainsville Texas were united in marriage Monday by Justice Stalcup.
Miss Louise Baird and Mr. Dewey Wooten were united in marriage at Cloudecroft Tuesday by Justice of the Peace David C. Hover. The contracting parties are from Highrolls.
Miss Julia Baldoramma and Joe Martinez were united in marriage on Monday by Justice Stalcup. Both spouses reside in Alamogordo.
After investigation the town of Alamo Gordo may sell the fruit selling franchise at the depot. A. L. Austin built a stand on the park plot paying one dollar daily for the privilege. The railway company opposes fruit vending on its right of way. Residents favor a town booth with a salaried manager and possible commissions plus advertising cards and literature.
A truckload of trout fry arrived from the State Fish Hatchery and was distributed that afternoon to the Bonito Eagle and Ruidoso streams by Geo T. McQuillen J. B. Frenrn and local game and fish association members. This is the second stock of the year and promises better fishing with continued stocking and protection.
County clerk's office issued a license to wed on the 22nd for Miss Edna Teague and George M Hamilton of the Lower Penasco county area.
An engineer testifying in a dairy farmer versus railway case recounts how a cow was not on the track but in a stream beyond it. He describes the locomotive leaping off the rails and crushing the cow alive with a fatal plunge, ending the exchange with a shocked silence.

Jess Ostic, a sawmill employee, fell from the dock last Saturday afternoon and broke his leg and a bone in his nose.
Mrs. Melaven a state game warden is in Alamogordo from Santa Fe today on official business. She is at the New Weigele Hotel under a physician’s care and the visit is linked to a plan for a paid deputy game warden to protect game in the Sacramentoes. The Commer Club and Rotary Club back the proposition which has broad support across the state.

G F Rousseau toured Alamogordo residents during a several day stay. He is now employed by the Electric Railway Co of El Paso as a freelance troubleshooter, a role he enjoys for its testing work and experimentation.
Mrs Maurice Morgan, from a south Alamogordo home, remains critically ill at Rousseau hospital though reports indicate slow improvement.
Miss Velma Dudley departed last Thursday for a short visit with friends in Lincoln county before starting a teaching term in Tucson, Arizona next year. Mrs L Rice of San Antonio visited her sister Mrs J T Reid in Alamogordo for several days and will return home soon.
