Otero Oil Company reports resumed drilling 30 miles south and 9 miles east of Alamogordo with progress noted as satisfactory. President H L Pratt announces plans offering stock plus acreage leases for investments of $100 or more. Local interest grows as Alamogordo residents visit the well.
Governor Miles touted finishing Highway 54 during his 1941 42 campaign opening in Socorro outlining its path from Nara Visa to Tucumcari Santa Rosa Tularosa Alamogordo and Las Cruces to the coast. The project would connect a large populated region and be a key cross state route.
On Monday evening August 25 at eight o clock a group of piano pupils of Mrs H J Hebbeln will be presented in recital in the under croft of the Methodist Church. The pupils invite all of their friends to be present.
Announcement seeks entries for the Otero County Fair Baby Beauty Show with three age classes from under six months to two years. Babies will be photographed. three winners per class receive enlarged photos and prizes. Crawling and foot races feature, music by the Alamo Band, and registration through Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce.
Grace Wood Payne seeks divorce from Alvin Payne. A suit to quiet title is filed by M. H. Barkley against Frank E McCleary et al. Ora L. Ayers files for divorce from E R Ayers. Lorna Shipley sues Otero County Commissioners and R L Harrison Co to nullify leasing a county grader. Hearing set August 27 before Judge Irwin Moise. Attorney Geo A Shipley announces.
The Tularosa Chamber sponsors its Second Annual Outdoor Play The Saga of Tularosa at the High School Athletic Field August 27 and 28 followed by the Annual Rodeo August 29 to September 6. Prank Ornelas stars as Besario Duran in a tale tracing 1860s to IXTH era including Round Mountain Saint Francis vision and Saint Prancis church.
Alamogordo schools begin on Tuesday September 3 at 9:00 a m with new pupils registering during the prior week. High School locker reservations start August 26. A teachers meeting is set for Monday September end at 4 p m. Beginners born before January 1 1935 report to the two primary buildings. other grades report to designated Central North or East buildings based on street location.
Encino attorney Nick Krannawitter seeks the Democratic nomination for state senator in the 15th district. He has lived in the state over 40 years, runs a mercantile business in Encino, and now works as a livestock commission agent dealing in wool and hides. His son Dick accompanies him at Wee Tuesday campaign events. Old friend Dr Beau Barringer from Long Beach reports improved health but longing for Alamogordo.
Veal, a well known perccerve man, leases the former Dutch Market stand on Ninth Street and announces Veal's Grocery & Market opening Saturday August 24. He will stock a complete line of staples, groceries, meats, vegetables and produce. Mr and Mrs Lawrence Bessendon of Jamestown were guests of Mr and Mrs M Hunt this week while enroute home from a trip to California. Mrs Feasendon is a niece of Mr Hunt.
Mre Kay Prather remains seriously ill after an abdominal operation on Saturday. Bill Allison of Lubbock hosted at the Cloudcroft Lander and was treated for a broken right forearm this week. Hoby Lee, son of Mr and Mrs Oliver M Lee, underwent a rural lectomy on Sunday.
Johnwill Baris, custodian at White Sands, is featured in El Paso papers after returning a lost watch to its owner. Visitors praised the gate keeper despite long hours, as Pennsylvanian visitors with seven children toured Scenic Point. Clarke and wife from Connecticut photographed sunset at the Sands. Over 1004 visitors this month. attendance compares favorably to prior months with no rival monument in the Southwest.
Funeral services for James Turner Thomason 80 were conducted at the Baptist Church with Rev Barro Keating in charge. He died August 16 in Abilene Texas at his daughter's home after long ill health. Born November 12 1860 in Fulton Kentucky he moved to Burleson Texas at sixteen and later lived in New Mexico and Alamorde. He is survived by six children and seventeen grandchildren with most kin present.
A congregational meeting at the Presbyterian Church at Hiam is called for August 1, 1910 to consider calling a minister to the vacancy. The meeting opens September 1, 1940, with sales of held furniture at 1410 Mich Ave by Oscus Shenfield.
Mrs. Leslie Beaty in charge of the home canning department asks exhibitors to bring more canned goods to the Otero County Fair. She urges several jars for the group canning division and notes top three jars in vegetables fruit pickles or relishes will be judged with prizes for quality uniformity and attractiveness. Premium lists with details are at the Chamber of Commerce office and many lists have already been mailed to exhibitors.
A pending sale aims to transfer Hollomon Bros stores in town and at Ruidoso and the Hollomon sawmill in Hollywood to a new stock corporation being formed. Presting e and Seligman say friends are subscribing stock, for a November transfer, with a $7,500 forfeiture already paid.
Stone of alignment of candidates in the state primary forms as Miles supporters gather at a Catron County barbecue billed as a Miles for Governor rally. The Silver City Daily Press notes speakers including H R Hodges, Hinrton Dwyre, Tom Summers and other state officials amid Chavez for Senator and Miles slate stickers. The report says Miles endorsement reached by filing administration faction candidates first.
Mrs. Thelma Northcutt, formerly of 1101 Ohio Ave Alamo Gordo, died after a gasoline truck crash Sunday near Las Cruces. Her husband Brownie Northcutt drove the vehicle. She passed away at 3:00 pm and was buried at Mescalero? Las Cruces cemetery. Surviving are two daughters aged 12 and 8 and the husband.
Clyde Tingley and ally J R Wrinkle campaigned in Otero County in support of his bid for governor. He criticized Miles administration, pledging further staff cuts and denouncing Nepotism while recounting hospital and tax claims amid a crowded Alamogordo court room.

The district announces the opening date of September 2 for Otero County Rural schools. Through the Kyee Textbook Department students will receive limited arithmetics and readers. high school books will be expanded. A teachers meeting is set for August 6, 1940 at 10:00 a.m. Dr Arthur King, optometrist, will hold eye exams at Sorenson's Jewelry Store every Saturday with glasses fitted and lenses duplicated.
A candidate announces his bid for the office of State Senator representing the 25th District including Lincoln Otero Socorro and Torrance counties in the Democratic primary on September 14. The notice expresses appreciation for support and influence. A related line mentions Windfall Pears and apples for selling Granthind Kanech and La Lue Road with a phone number.
