White Sands Monument Sets August Attendance Record
White Sands National Monument logged 13 861 visitors in the 30 days ending August 20 1941 and issued 2 787 new car permits. The August total surpassed 1940 and 1939 figures, with two new rangers added Ed Alberts roaming ranger and Ray Schaffner seasonal ranger. A diesel lighting plant is planned for installation this week.

Death of Mrs. Fred G Bays in Alamogordo
Mary Elizabeth Bogart Bays died at home in Alamogordo on Saturday August 16 at 10 am. Funeral services led by L D Cummings were held at the Church of Christ, with a large turnout and interment in Mount Vista Cemetery. She was born June 7 1874 in Fannin County Texas and married Fred G Bays on March 13 1892. Eight children survived except daughter Lola who died earlier. seven sons and 23 grandchildren attended or were noted as pallbearers, along with three brothers, one unable to attend Hospitalized. Mrs Bays had long been a Church of Christ member and was respected as a neighbor and friend.

Miss Violet Bushan, longtime teacher at the School for the Blind, will join the New Mexico Department of Public Welfare in Santa Fe as a medical social worker in the Division of Services to the Blind. The Alamogordo county fair will host a horse racing feature on September 13 and 14. Seventeen stalls added for the event support a growing field with riders and trainers arriving from Plainview Duncan and other areas.
