The opening meeting is set for September 6.
At the 1950 New Mexico Grand Assembly of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls held on the Eastern New Mexico College campus in Portales, four Ala Mogordo members received honors. Betty Jean Bourbonin of Hatch was installed Grand Worthy Advisor. Margaret Rutz and Joan Holcomb earned state appointments. Raynell Bell and Esther Grissom received the grand Cross of color degree. The event drew over 700 Rainbow girls and more than 1,000 related members and parents. Grand Assembly for 1951 will convene in Silver City.
Mrs Frances Godley and Miss Nell Dale returned from the Delta Kappa Gamma national convention in Dallas. Fifteen hundred delegates from 48 states and Hawaii attended August 6 to 12, with eleven from New Mexico. Headline speakers included Dr Eva Anderson and Dr Kathryn McHale.
The county superintendent Mrs Frances Godley announces the teaching roster for Otero County schools nine new teachers listed with several additions across La Luz High Rolls Cloudcroft Mayhill Orogrande Newman Pinon Chatfield Canyon and Prestridge Logging Camp. The first meeting is set for Saturday August 26 at 10 00 am in the county courthouse.
An important meeting of varied groups of the Otero County Community Concert association is called by president Mrs. Marshal R. Sanguinet for this evening at 7 30 in the Community Center. Executive committee and board of directors along with all team captains are urged to attend to discuss the September 4 through 9 membership campaign.
Five business owners led by Victor Smith and R G Walker petitioned the Town Board to reclassify their locations from non conforming use to designated business areas. They argue remodeling and expansion are restricted under current status while the Overton grocery enjoys business area status. A new hearing on the Overton petition is set for 7 30 Thursday evening August 17 and the five petitions were sent to the Zoning Commission for report and recommendation.
Amateur bands from New Mexico communities are invited to perform at the State Fair. Secretary Manager Leon H. Harms urges band leaders and school officials to register early for inclusion in the opening day parade and program. Lodging and meals are provided at Youth Hall. The State Fair crochet entry will also compete in the National Crochet Contest, with Otero County Fair also entering.
Forty of forty-one town workers receive salary hikes raising total payroll to 6800 dollars yearly. New salaries list City Manager B E Rutz at 5400, Clerk Oglesbee 3300, various department heads and staff across Water Irrigation Police Streets Garbage and Miscellaneous units with adjusted figures.
The Town Board voted 3 to 1 to buy a Burroughs billing machine approved on the recommendation of clerk Mrs. Virginia Oglesbee and Town auditor J. A. Clifford. The $3899.70 unit will handle 1700 monthly water and garbage accounts and also bill sewer taxes starting this month. Alderman Joy opposed only for desire of broader study of other machines.
Ray Bell of the State Game Department discussed three proposed lake projects in Otero County at the recent meeting of the Otero County Game Conservation Association. Potential sites include La Luz Canyon near the Abbott place, an artesian well near White Sands, and a Sacramento River dam near Sacramento Peak. The plan aims to sustain fish for recreation, with town water reserves to ensure year round flow.

Vice President Alben W Barkley will speak at the Democratic banquet in Albuquerque on August 23 at La Loma ballroom. The event costs 26 dollars a plate and is part of a statewide gathering ahead of the August 24 convention, with proceeds to national party headquarters.
The Town of Alamogordo ordered a Drunko meter for 225 dollars to be used in the police magistrate court. It analyzes a suspect’s breath to determine drunkenness and can test about 100 samples with supplied chemicals. The device is intended to distinguish between the modest drinker and a drunk driving offender.
The Otero County chapter of the American Red Cross calls all members to assemble at the Community Center on Monday night August 21 at 7 for officer elections. Any contributor of a dollar or more is a member and may vote. Joseph W. Roessler auditing report shows funds on hand $1889.72 for period July 1 1949 to June 30 1950.
Graveside services were held Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock for the stillborn son of Pat and Mrs. Frank J. Maklary. Father Quinn of El Paso officiated. The child was born the previous day at Holloman Hospital.
The district announces enrollment for all grades and the high school on Monday August 28 from 9:00 a.m. Superintendent Barnie Caton urges parents to note there will be no early enrollment at the high school. Eligible beginners must be six by January 1, 1951.
John Franklin Hoff of Virginia faces two fines in Justice Court with James A. Tatum and awaits disposition on a third charge. Sheriff Wayne McCommis arrested Hoff after a warrant was issued. He allegedly passed checks for 5 dollars to Corner Drug Store 10 dollars to Jordan and Son and 30 dollars to Brunells. The largest check charge remains pending.
Teaching staffs for Alamo Gordo elementary and high schools were released this week by Superintendent W. Barnie Caton. Administrative heads include R. H. Robbins high school principal and Raymond L. Westfall and George Nelson elementary principals. High school faculty features numerous named educators across subjects with new appointments and replacements. Grade school staff roster lists many teachers with several new hires and further additions expected later.
Tularosa teachers will meet for the first time Saturday August 26 at 2 30 p m prior to the public schools opening on Monday August 28 John L Larkin superintendent said pupils in grades 7 through 12 will register in the high school building Parents are asked to bring only beginners who will have reached Larkin noted that rooms apartments and houses are needed for several new teachers and urged residents who can rent to call him building changes were announced the home economics department library and sciences will meet in the new high school building the old home economics department will be used for the lunch program the lunch program will not be ready the first week of school

Three Town Board members Mullins Joy and Telles are on the record. five candidates support a 98.9 slate with Mullins Mantréon Miller. others run independently. Ballot drawing set for 2:00 PM August 22. voters select one candidate per district.
Mrs. Cora Rees aged 90 died peacefully in her sleep at her son E P Rees home in Water Valley. She had lived in Water Valley 76 years and moved to Alamogordo 14 years ago. Surviving are her husband one son nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Water Valley and interment followed beside her husband in the family plot.
Frances Godley was named chairwoman of the County chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis at the annual meeting Friday night. New officers include Raymond Mehomone as vice president and Mire Frappes as secretary. Rev. Watson and Mrs Loggains elected board members. Mrs. Burch also serving. Otero County reports 88 polio cases to date this year, compared with 48 at the same time last year.
