City commissioners spent Tuesday night on routine matters and monthly reports from the city manager police department and city jail. Outside residents asked about the three mile planning commission jurisdiction and subdivision rules. Mayor Mullins and City Attorney Walker reassured them the jurisdiction applies to subdivisions only. Councilman Steele named chair of the Citizen Safety Council replacing Moffett and the commission weighs formalizing the group as an official city council by ordinance.
Jerry E. Bristow, 19, of El Paso was dismissed of speeding charges in Justice of Peace court Monday. His car collided with a semi driven by Ed ward Crawford, 33, of Rusk, Texas, at about 6:20 a.m. Sunday in front of the Yucca Drive In on Highway 54-70. Bristow said sun glare blinded him.
Mrs. A I Chandler underwent surgery Friday at William Beaumont hospital in El Paso. Friends may send cards in care of the hospital ward 6.

Chief Clarence Walker told the city commission that 58 accidents occurred in the first seven months of 1954. F E Greenwood, safety advisor, aided the count while last year only accidents of $25 damage or more were recorded. City commissioners commended Greenwood and Walker for efforts to curb traffic accidents.
Sammy Jack Sain 18 of Carlsbad faces reckless driving charges after a one car crash near Prices Steakhouse on Highway 83 at 7 30 Monday night. Sain, injured, was driving a car that missed a curve and rolled ten times then stopped. Four passengers were aboard Vicki Nunez 18 Cloudcroft treated for a hip injury Maria Gallegos 29 508 Texas Ave lacerations and abrasions. Sain sustains serious head lacerations including a torn ear while two passengers were未hurt. State Policeman Jim Syling investigated the incident.
Work order issued to Campbell and Kay general contractors who won a 354000 dollar bid to add two additions at the high school and build a new grade school on 15th Street at Oregon Avenue. Superintendent Barnie Caton confirms plans for the Alamogordo project.
A Taos speech by national Democratic chair Stephen Mitchell announced a October appearance by Adlai Stevenson in a bid to boost the statewide campaign. The announcement came as global and domestic events unfold including a Western Hemisphere focus in a State Department white paper and flood conditions in New Mexico reports near Hatch.
City inspectors started interior and exterior checks of downtown buildings after Alamogordo approved paid firefighters. The drive to remove hazards began Wednesday following Tuesday night commission action.
Alamogordo Public School officials announced August 23 as enrollment day amid uncertain teacher numbers. First eight grades enroll at several sites with a $1.50 registration fee to cover consumable materials. Junior high and high school students register on designated floors. transportation not provided.
Grace Roark, formerly fourth grade teacher at the local school, has been appointed Supervisor for the first four grades in Alamogordo Schools. She holds a master's degree and brings extensive supervision experience from public schools and college teacher training programs. A spokesman says she will enhance instructional quality in her new role.
Hollo man Air Force Base jail escape leaves two prisoners at large. Airman Basic Henry Neidhartt of Kenner Louisiana and Airman Basic Robert J. Smith of Toledo Ohio reportedly sawed through a barred window and fled the base. Base commander Col Frank D. Sharp said air police are patrolling the guided missile range while state and local authorities are alerted. Smith is convicted of wrongful appropriation of personal property and Neidhartt of check forgery.
The city zoning commission will meet the second Monday of every month after a called meeting. City manager reports several resignations are pending mayoral appointments.
Torrential rains along the Penasco river area caused heavy crop loss and property damage around Mayhill and Elk. Dikes and fences were swept away. about a 20 mile radius suffered flooding. A farmer, John L. Parker, noted prior fires and urged a farmer meeting at Mayhill school to discuss prevention with Forest Service and other officials attending.
A lumber pile in a residential backyard near 1106 Fillmore sparked a fire early Wednesday. Firefighters from Alamo Gordo extinguished the blaze. Wayne McCommis said cause is unknown and damage was minor.
Walter Lafferty a well known Alamo Gordo business man owner and operator of the Corner Drug was reported much improved today at Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital His condition showed marked improvement after admission from 511 16th street
Mrs Bradley Carr plans to leave today for Carlsbad California to join her husband who is stationed there with the U S Marines.
The Mt Parker Cox Canyon districts schedule ASC elections for August 18 from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. at Mountain Park Store and Cox Canyon Schoolhouse. Five county committeemen will be chosen from ten candidates including Homer Davis and Vance Roach. Voting eligibility includes farm interest and certain federal programs. wives of eligible farmers may vote. A county committee will be elected after community delegates vote.
Larry J. Lee pled guilty Wednesday to a charge of drunken driving in district court before Dist. Judge W. T. Scoggin. The defendant was assessed court costs.
A Tuesday News report misstated trustee candidate votes at the annual meeting. C V Clayton of Tularosa actually received 87 votes, not one. The candidate who initially appeared to have a single vote is corrected to reflect this change.
