Mrs Frances Burch Alamogordo postmistress has completed plans for the corner stone laying and dedication of the federal building nearing completion. The ceremony at 11 a m features Rep J J Dempsey laying stone with music by the Alamogordo school band and a breakfast at Plaza Cafe before. Attendees include local officials postmasters and government heads from surrounding towns.

Willows alders cottonwoods tules and cattails can drink or evaporate more water than crops, with tules and cattails using water beyond surface evaporation. Water-loving plants in and around ditches may absorb up to 93 acre inches annually and tank-tules as high as 272 inches.

Town Board Meeting approves funds and upgrades in Alamo Gordo
The town board met Tuesday with the mayor present. They approved July financials and several bills, ordered 5000 feet of 12 inch pipe and quotes for 4500 feet of 4 inch pipe for Caballero Canyon water, denied a raise for water chief, approved two street lights, and repealed milk ordinances to draft a new regulation on grades and sales penalties.

Jack Swope 70 resident of the Sacramento Mountains died at his home in Cloudcroft Friday Aug 5. Funeral services and interment were in Cloudcroft. He was brother of the late Jim Swope of Cloudcroft and survived by his widow.

Palmilla plant blamed for goat deaths near CCC camp grounds
Santa Fe Aug. 2 A lethal weed called Palmilla plant is blamed by State Health Director Dr E B Godfrey for killing more than 100 goats from Carrizozo to Alamogordo. Dead animals posed a health threat as carcasses decomposed. Carcasses were to be destroyed by private parties while the investigation details were sent to the state sheep sanitary board in Albuquerque.

Death of Mrs. R. H. Pierce in Eddy New Mexico
Mrs. R. H. Pierce, 68, died about 5 a m Thursday at her home on Indiana avenue after a brief illness due to heart disease. Survivors include daughters Mrs. Jessie Cushman of Santa Fe and Miss Hazel Pierce, plus several sons and stepchildren. Funeral plans await arrival of relatives. she was active in the Baptist Church and was born Sally Green in 1870 in Leon County Texas.

The White Sands Theatre and local merchants present a two night beauty pageant on August 16 and 17. Audience selects six finalists Tuesday, then they compete again Wednesday under a panel of judges. The service helps growers market products and aids dealers in locating desired crops while reporting quality and quantity ready for market in various areas. Data come from crop reporters and county agents who submit twice monthly to the State Extension Office, then mailed to dealers. The service expands outlets for NM produce beyond rail routes and supports wholesale dealers and independent truckers. It is in its first year and has met with good response from both growers and dealers, aiming to improve marketing and distribution.
