Death of Floyd Gage in El Paso Hospital
Floyd Gage a stockman from Old Mexico Chilnahua died after a sudden illness in an El Paso hospital Sunday. He rode the range Tuesday, Aug 1, grew ill, and relatives were notified as he declined. Funeral services were held at Pinon Church with Rev. Joe Gillenwater officiating and a large local attendance. He was born May 31, 1894 in Navarre County Texas, served in WWI, and spent years in Mexico with cattle ventures before returning to Otero County. He is survived by his wife Norma Kasmar, a son Perry Floyd, his mother Mrs. J. W. Gage, and brothers W A and Le Roy of Pinon, Emmett of Los Angeles, Edward of Jeminez, and others attending the service. He maintained ties to Otero County during his time in Mexico.

First Lieutenant William C Newell 26 of Las Cruces New Mexico pilot of the Eighth Air Force stationed in England receives an Oak Leaf Cluster to his Air Medal for meritorious achievement during bombing missions against German industry coastal defenses and supply lines in support of the Allied invasion of France. Record Fertilizer Supplies and Rising Slaughter Amid Farm Struggles
American farmers face a year of ample fertilizer if 4 900 000 tons are delivered by December 31, marking a jump over last year. Cattle slaughter at 32 federal centers for the week ending July 22 reached 208 327, a yearly high, with calves at 111 555, over twice that of the prior year. Hog slaughter fell for the third straight week, while hog prices rose sharply. For the first five months, cattle and calves slaughtered totaled 12 200 000, short of the 1944 goal by about 1 150 000 cattle and 25 000 calves. The 1944 target calls for 35–36 million head. A Canadian River soil survey of 578 000 acres shows gullying could cost farms, with erosion long before and after 1900. Ranchers are building dikes, dams, and planting vegetation to curb gullying. Farm real estate sales over the 12 months ending March rose about 20 percent to a record, while July 1 grain stocks show 49 percent less wheat, 28 percent less corn, and 20 percent less oats than a year ago.
