The new track on the County Fair Grounds east of the Ball Park begins inner railing work under an NYA project. Quaken asp poles on oak posts form a continuous rail around the half mile track. A six horse starting chute is ordered and a grand stand is planned for a large race meet on Sept 16 17 and 18 with seven races daily.
Funeral services for Elmer Monroe Mahill 72 El Paso mining engineer who died Tuesday at his home 1005 East Nevada Street will be held at 3 p m Wednesday in the Peak Hagedon Chapel with Rev J E Davis officiating. He had lived in El Paso 57 years and is survived by his widow two daughters two sisters and one brother. He became a mining engineer after working as a messenger for Wells Fargo and directed mines in Mexico until 1910 and again after 1929.
The California State Chamber of Commerce highway committee urged Oregon Arizona and New Mexico to close all motor vehicle registration stations at borders. It said California’s border stations, closed Aug. 1, did not benefit the state and only irritated visitors from other states.
Santa Fe announces tighter brake and light testing with mandatory triannual inspections. J O Gallegos state revenue commissioner says August 21 to September 15 marks the first enforcement window and that Motor Vehicle Division will supply numbered stickers and stations must record issued stickers and inspection outcomes.

Last year about 1,200,000 farmers sought marketing information, double the 1938 level, with many guided by cooperative groups. Over 18,500 communities received marketing aid, aiding products valued at more than 640 million dollars. Local leaders and 100 marketing specialists support the effort.

Fernando Holguin a 41 year old Alamogordo workman was injured while attempting to board a freight train. His right leg was mangled and amputated at the knee at City County Hospital in El Paso. He is a World War veteran. son Gilbert 12 witnessed the accident. The pair had been visiting relatives at Ysleta. Mrs Holguin visited him Monday night.
Federal relief officials ordered wholesale layoffs of 650,000 Works Progress Administration employees by September 1. Commissioner Harrington, in talks with President Roosevelt, cited a new WPA act requiring removal of workers with 18 months continuous employment or longer, affecting about 31 percent of relief staff.
The Alamogordo Softball League contributed 70 dollars to finish a second tennis court at Alameda Park adjoining the present court. The project, proposed by the Alamo Rotary Club and advanced by the Rotary Committee, also received support from the Alamogordo Woman's Club Firemen Rotary A H 8 Class of 1935 and a fundraiser dancer. Town approval is expected before WPA labor is available for construction on town property.
Ed Harrington led most of the day but was edged by Jack Moore and Lt Streeter of El Paso. Moore won high score offhand 44 at 200 meters and high aggregate 92. Streeter claimed high prone score 49 at 500 meters and second high aggregate 90. Harrington earned silver for second 49 prone, with Streeter above him. Team totals put Tiradores Del Norte at 873 and Alamogordo at 845.
The Civic League held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday with routine business and committee reports. Mrs. Josephine Dudley reviewed her World’s Fair trip to New York, joined by Mrs. Ida Menger on a Texas tour visiting major cities and Niagara Falls. They met Dean Hennessee at West Point and received training notes.
Henry Baca Custer Davis and Walter Balache all Mescalero Indians were fined 12 50 each this week by Justice D M Barringer on charges of reckless driving.
Albert Saldives an 18 year old died from injuries after a Sunday auto crash on the highway near Tularosa en route to Alamagordo. Driver Patricio Ochoa was injured. Eloy Madrid suffered a forehead cut. four others escaped with minor hurts. Funeral services were held Monday with burial in the local cemetery. Saldives, an NYA worker, had lived with cousin Joe Saldivas and helped on the Fairgrounds adobe project.
Santa Fe officials report 2,300 New Mexico WPA employees will be dismissed under the 18 month rule, with 1,915 already listed and about 500 more expected from five counties. Veterans are exempt from discharge.
