Elihu Joy Pioneer Of Mayhill Section Died Sud­denly

Elihu Joy died suddenly August 1 at his ranch near Mayhill after a long life born December 9, 1861 in Kerrville Texas. He married Nancie York May 4 1844 and moved to New Mexico in 1885 where he and his wife raised 10 children. Funeral services were held August 2 in Artesia with many grandchildren and great grandchildren in attendance.

Farley Couple Leaves for Williamsport Picnic

Mr and Mrs J E Farley depart Monday for Williamsport Pennsylvania. Mr Farley a master mechanic in the S P shops at Alamogordo will visit his boyhood home and attend the annual Williamsport picnic, a 60 plus year tradition. They plan a three week trip.

Picnic on the Sands for Lincoln National Forest Staff

Employees of the Supervisor's office at Lincoln National Forest and their families gathered for a Wednesday evening picnic on the sands. Five cars carried participants and a large array of food was available for all attendees and guests.

Transportation bids set by county board Tuesday

At a special Otero County Board of Education meeting on August 8, 1933 bids for student transportation were opened and contracts awarded for Mountain Park Bluewater Three Rivers and other routes. The board rejected Elkhorn Sixteen Springs Stelworth routes and will reopen bids at 10 a.m. August 22, 1933.

Alamogordo Man Appointed Custodian of White Sands Monument

Tom Charles of Alamogordo was appointed custodian of the White Sands Monument by President Roosevelt on the director of U S Park Service recommendation. The monument spans 142 987 acres of gypsum and is a unique world deposit. Charles led years of effort behind the proclamation creating the monument. He will promote development and advertise the site with help from the Las Cruces chamber of commerce.

County Officials Grapple With Local Liquor Ballot Timing

Otero County commissioners adjourned on a liquor option petition tied to the September 19 general election awaiting an opinion from Attorney General Neumann. They approved a bridge contract for $175 to Swig, and allotted $100 to bills. Salary arrears totaling 13 percent of June pay were approved. board reconvenes August 28.

C C C F-17 Camp Entertained in Roswell

A group of F-17 C C C boys from Raton Camp near Capitan were entertained in Roswell Saturday. Roswell organizations planned a magazine and literature collection for the Capitan country camp. S. Strickland, assistant supervisor, left for Capitan to stay a week at the Raton C C C camp. Roger Morris, assistant supervisor, surveyed Sacramento division routes for telephone lines last week.

Observatory atop Monjeau peak attracts many visitors

An observatory erected on Monjeau summit draws daily visitors now that a year old road makes the trek by auto feasible. The 14 by 14 foot glassed shelter, insulated from lightning, houses a ranger kitchen and bedroom. From its vantage point, the Sangre de Cristo range in New Mexico, the San Dias near Albuquerque, Black Range, and Sacramentos are visible. Eagle Lake dam at the foot feeds Nogal Lake, the S P Reservoir.

Death of M. M. Ward Alamogordo Businessman

Marvin Marion Ward a well known Alamogordo businessman died Wednesday at Rousseau Hospital after weeks of illness stemming from influenza. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church with Rev Earl R Keating officiating. Ward born July 16 1895 in El Dorado Arkansas lived in Arkansas most of life before moving to Alamogordo nine years ago. He married Maud Wilson in June 1925 at El Paso Texas. He leaves wife father W J Ward of El Dorado two brothers W M Ward Tulatosa and Albert Shepherd Ward Alateojyor do three sisters Mrs K B Howard Jonesboro Ark Mrs Sage Rowland El Dorado Ark and Mrs Martin Dial El Dorado Ark two stepchildren Frank and John L Wilson and many relatives and friends.

Tolan Lewis Injured in Auto Collision South of Orogrande

Tolan Lewis sustained injuries when his car was struck by a truck that fled the scene. The impact flipped the vehicle, hurling occupants from the car. In the group were R. Baker Sr. and Jr. and the Boyce brothers from Ruidoso, returning from El Paso with rodeo prizes for a Kids' Rodeo contest.

Remodeling activity is evident as El Paso contractor M. A. Morrison and assistant Bud Hoover finish a tile front on Howard's Cafe with a hexagonal tile sign. They work on Rolland Drug Store front in robin egg blue and white. Robertson Building at 916 Pennsylvania Ave undergoes complete renovation for the Pig Inn to open around Aug 18 with plate glass front, new sidewalks, drive-in space, plaster, flooring and paint.

Antonio Chavez Dies After Canal Crossing Heart Failure

Antonio Chavez 62 long-time Alamogordo resident died of heart disease after apparently falling into a Little Canal while crossing to a cemetery. His body was found by his niece Mrs. Gabriel Gutierrez and others. Coroner ID M Barringer seated a verdict of death from heart disease. He is survived by his widow and three brothers. Funeral held Tuesday at the family home conducted by Rev. Fr. Jas Torrandell.
