The bill runs high as Jim, teased into social excess, ends up buying goods and paying the price for a night of showy hospitality. In the end Jim returns home, paying $43.60, and continues to shop with the firm.
A damaged excerpt describes an Apache attack on Third Cavalry troops. Two companies of colored soldiers were wiped out, a wounded lieutenant sent for reinforcements, and the Apaches fled. The exact number of attackers and dead was never confirmed, with only sparse evidence in the canyon.
