Sailors and the Merchant Marine Hospital Service
Fort Stanton will host a new merchant marine hospital to care for sailors on registered ships. The system dates to 101 years ago to impress sailors into service, fund via tonnage taxes, and provide medical treatment through about thirty first class and many second class hospitals. Initial capacity will be limited to about twenty patients, with expansion to serve 400 or more entitled sailors as funds and needs grow. J W Le Grange outlined the service logic and funding, noting transport costs and selective admission policies.
