A roundup of daily happenings includes A P Jackson in El Paso, Hawkins leaving for New York, Baker and Llewellyn in Alamogordo, Rock Island Limited likely starting September 1, and El Paso Northern E restaurants opening. Local visits include Guthrie in Ancho, Hall in Albuquerque promoting the October fair, and several business moves and arrivals. Found watch, ex postmaster Rhomberg shifting to jewelry, furniture shipments to Alamo, bakery plans opposite K of P corner, and Angel burial. Alamogordo livery aids trains, new express wagon, and Dr. Fizz in town for Baptist association.
The Woodmen of the World held funeral rites for Lawerence W. Angel killed in a July 2 1903 train accident at Belen. A procession of about a hundred members in mourning badges escorted the hearse to the grave site where a Woodmen ritual followed along with organ music and floral tributes.
J H Laurie returned from Vermont after twelve years away and reported a great trip with his family. Dedman also traveled with a sister, stopping in Chicago and visiting Montreal. The Lincoln Baptist Association held a three day meeting with about 300 delegates expected and many in attendance.
In St Louis July 29 editors Shepherd and Cundiff were fined for contempt of court over coverage of the Oglesby railroad suit. Shepherd paid $500 plus costs. Cundiff $1 with costs after agreeing to an apology. Warrensburg citizens quickly massed support and telegraphed funds to secure Shepherd’s release. The episode drew sharp editorials across Missouri.
E. E. Mensch an optician and expert watch maker with F. M. Rhomberg died by suicide Wednesday morning after a period of despondency. He had confided pain from past disappointments and a prior morbid mood. Funeral at the Williams home, Major Gillett spoke, and interment was at City cemetery. Born Williamsport Pa about 35 years ago, he left behind a few surviving relatives whose whereabouts are unknown. He had attempted suicide several times since 1890, often using morphine, and left a note requesting no religious ceremonies. He was known as a kind, faithful man who cared for others deeply.
Born August 5 to Dr and Mrs L D Roger a girl the Dr has failed to pass around cigars perhaps it will be a box of candy. Frank Baldwin jailed Wednesday on a complaint charged with shooting at his wife and causing trouble. The library benefit ice cream and music at Park Friday night drew good crowds. W H Jackson manager of City Meat Market left for Cloudecroft for health reasons. Mrs M P McCracken and children left for Mineral Wells Texas visiting while Mr McCracken is in New York. J E Smith of Beatrice Neb James Mengen of Omaha Mr and Mrs C B Mengen of New York registered at Hotel Alamogordo. These parties support the large reservoir and irrigation project north of Tularosa led by Col Llewellyn Judge Baker and others.
Alamogordo public schools will open August 31 with about 500 students. Prof. J. H. Horton serves as superintendent overseeing 8th 9th and 10th grades, Miss Flora Clark handles 6th and 7th, Prof. Cridebring 5th, Miss Murphey 4th, Miss Rapier 3rd, Miss Bailey 2nd, and Miss Park primary. J M Hawkins began leading the Alamogordo post office Wednesday morning.
