Otero County Electric Co op elects Trustees

The Otero County Electric Cooperative held its annual meeting in Cloudcroft on August 2 to elect a nine member board. New officials chosen August 4 include Bryan Runyan as president and Charles Fuller as vice president, with J C Read treasurer and A J Vickers secretary.

Building permit totals rise toward two million this year

City hall issued July and August permits pushing the year’s total to $1,659,458 with 41 new residences at Indian Wells Addition adding $232,600. July’s $278,051 includes a $225,186 gymnasium project for the School for the Blind and several residential additions and business upgrades across multiple addresses.

Carmen Baca retires from Alamo Gordo city service

Carmen Baca Sr. of the La Luz diversion dam and division weir retires after 30+ years with the City of Alamo Gordo on July 31 under the New Mexico Retirement Act for Public Employees. Replaced by I T Wiley, senior railroad retiree. two other city workers Jesus Maese and Pedro Ortega plan October retirements.

Mullins Heads to State Board Meeting in Santa Fe

Mayor Walter S. Mullins will depart Sunday August 10 for Santa Fe to attend a State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors meeting where he serves as vice president. The agenda includes licensure examinations for embalmers. Mrs. Mullins and daughter Heather will accompany him.

Buck Joins Investment Firm as Clement Named Head Coach

Curtis J. Clement, former Alamogordo high school coach and athletic director, is named successor to Rolla Buck as Alamogordo High School head coach. Buck resigns after five years to join Investors Diversified Services in southeastern New Mexico. Buck will direct money management education for the IDS division in El Paso while AHS welcomes Clement, who played football and coached multiple sports. Buck credits strong school support and cites IDS offer as family need.

Holloman Little Theatre Returns to Air on KALG

The Holloman Little Theatre Group resumes broadcasts on KALG Monday August 18 after months of material shortage. A radio committee led by Bob Bielecki Lynn Doty and Rupert Huntington will handle future shows. Planned presentations include The Monkey's Paw Shake Hands with a Ghost The Undecided Molecule and works by Corwin Poe and Jacobs.

County Leaders To Study ARC Here August 13

Fifty civic, industrial, agricultural, economic and educational leaders of Otero county meet here August 13 with County Agricultural Mobilization Committee led by Jack Hobson. Sessions at Alamogordo community center begin 10:00 a.m. to form an agricultural resources conservation program for the county.

Antelope Season Open In 3 Areas

Three areas for antelope hunting are defined by the State Game Department Santa Fe. Area 1 lies north of Highway 66 and west of the Rio Grande Area 2 lies west of the San Andres Oscuro and Chupadero Mountains and east of Highway 66 Area 3 lies east of the mountains and south of Highway 60. Applications to choose area are due by September 2 at 10 am with license purchase deadlines September 18.

Buck Antelope Is Road Victim

A buck antelope was the road victim Tuesday night after colliding with Dick Gililland’s pickup on the range highway west of Mockingbird Gap. Gililland, from Hawaii Ave., found the animal dying and cut its throat to dress it on the scene. He notified district game warden Orville Luttrell who approved disposal and the meat for orphans at the House of Providence in Tularosa.

Sawmill Workers Open Talks on Wage Scale in Southwest

Sawmill workers of New Mexico and Arizona began wage negotiations in Albuquerque with the Arizona and New Mexico Pine Association for a 1 24 2 cent hourly increase under a two year contract dating from May 1951. Meetings resume in Flagstaff and Alamogordo with no agreed wage scale yet.

Otero County Fair Committee Updates 1952 Plans

At a Saturday meeting, Otero County Fair Committee representatives from Alamogordo Tularosa Mescalero La Luz Mayhill Sacramento Pinon Weed and Orogrande reviewed the fair program for the September 19 1952 fair. They reported leveling of the new grounds north of town flood dike work and building site staking while a metal building has shipped.

Missile cut power line near White Sands Proving Ground

A missile fired at White Sands Proving Ground severed a power line from Elephant Butte Dam to the Alamo Gordo area. Electricity failed across Holloman AFB and the mountain region for several hours while Alamogordo’s plant restored service promptly.

Former Tularosa Resident Dies in Lincoln Arkansas

Mrs. Ignacia Guerra Aguillon of 208 Maryland avenue died July 31. Rosary was held August 1 at Mullins O'Dell chapel. Mass followed August 2 at Immaculate Conception Church. Lieutenant Selleck Visits Grandparents on Leave

Lieutenant Richard Selleck on a 20 day leave visits his grandparents Mr and Mrs Richard Wilford and spends time with his parents Mr and Mrs Ollie Davis of El Paso. The Air Force pilot is on a fishing trip near Durango Colorado and will report back to Mobile Alabama at end of his twenty day leave.

Summer Tour to Mon Jean in Ruidoso Area Planned

An August 17 guided tour to Mon Jean in the Ruidoso area is announced by Mrs. Lillian Bagwell Chamber of Commerce manager. The group will depart Alamagordo at 9:00 a.m. reach Ruidoso at 10:30 and Mon Jean at 11:30 then lunch at Bonita Lake before a return via Capitan Ft. Stanton Nogal Carrizozo or Ruidoso and Highway 70. Chief’s Grandson And Companions Injured In Wreck

Robert Geronimo Jr. 19 grandson of Apache chief Geronimo Leroy Bigrope 21 and Richard Johanny Jr 21 of Mescalero were seriously injured when a cattle truck overturned during roundup work on the Indian Reservation. Geronimo and Bigrope were thrown free with Geronimo suffering a compound left leg fracture. Johanny pinned under the truck was taken to Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Driver Merle Scott brake failure caused the rollover. Other cowboys endured no injuries.

Polio Patient Admitted at Hotel Dieu El Paso

Hotel Dieu in El Paso reports 18 month old Daniel Trujillo son of Mr and Mrs Antonio Trujillo of Alamogordo was admitted last week as a polio patient. Health officials could not be reached for confirmation.

Blood Mobile to Visit Holloman Aug 11 for Donors

Alamogordo residents may donate血 on Monday afternoon August 11 from 3 to 5 at Holloman Air Force Base via a Fort Bliss mobile unit. Bus departures from the high school at 2:30 3:15 and 4:45 pm. Funeral rites conducted August 6 at the Tul arosa Methodist church for Thurman O. Mock of Tularosa who died July 31 at the Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque. The Masonic lodge led graveside services at Tularosa cemetery. Surviving include wife Eva Lettie Arnold, a son Lt. Ray Mock stationed in Germany, and Mock’s membership in the Methodist church and Masonic lodge.

Alamogordo School Opens September 2 With 76 Teachers

Superintendent W. Barnie Caton announced the Alamogordo school term begins Tuesday September 2 listing a staff of 76 teachers eight administrative personnel ten maintenance and janitorial workers and four bus drivers for the coming term.

Alamogordo Man David Harbour Dies in Texas

David Frank Harbour 57, longtime Alamogordo resident, died August 1 in Coleman Texas after a three week illness from a paralytic stroke. He worked five years as a radio engineer with Holloman AFB Electronics and Atmospheric unit and lived at Coronado Lodge. Survived by wife Ala and three sons Lieutenant Colonel David Harbour Albuquerque Bob Albuquerque and Jerry at Officers Candidate School San Antonio. Services held August 3 in Coleman with local officers Major Lawrent Dyvad and Master Sergeant Denton Pickering attending.

Joe McNatt Arrives in Japan for Korean Theatre Duties

Joe McNatt serving aboard the USS Brown arrived in Japan on July 28 and will take part in operations in the Korean area, according to his parents Mr. and Mrs. Douglas McNatt. He left San Diego in mid June after a 10 day visit with his wife and parents.
