The 80th Congress adjourned its first session amid criticism for reduced appropriations and a controversial labor law full of loopholes. Predictions say it may not last in current form, with both labor and industry doubtful about its longevity.

Road crews resume oil coal surfacing on State 83 from US 54-70 junction to Box Canyon project led by Henry Thygesen Construction Co. Armstrong & Armstrong tackles grade and drainage on 12 mile span 0 5S 4 north of Tularosa to Three Rivers. Maintenance resurfaces Alamogordo overpass on 0 5S 70 near White Sands and relays three miles of rough surfacing from La Luz turnoff to beyond.
Forty years of hauling water in the Pinon district ends with new wells drilled in 1946 1947 under AAA programs. W A Gage Henry Jerniwan Henry Tanner Sol Vanclere and John D Merritt provided permanent water for livestock and households, ending long hardship for residents and stock.
Mrs. Clara G Hawkins widow of William Ashton Hawkins died at her La Luz home last Friday from pneumonia amid long illness. Funeral at Our Lady of the Light Church La Luz Sunday with burial in Tularosa cemetery. Pallbearers include her sons Ashton Hawkins Tenafly NY and Gardner Hawkins Curtis NJ. other mourners listed from La Luz El Paso Las Cruces and nearby towns. She was 79, a native of Elmira NY, lived in Eddy Carlsbad Alamogordo El Paso and La Luz during a long regional life with seven children surviving.
The GI loan program of the Veterans Administration remains intact with no changes to eligibility determinations. VA official R. E. Hamblen notes about 5 percent of New Mexico WWII veterans have taken out loans, totaling 14,161,424 dollars for roughly 60,000 eligible veterans.
Miss Falwine Kimmons of Alamogordo is engaged to Lincoln G Ferrisi of Santa Fe. The wedding is set for August 24 at two p.m. in Alamogordo First Baptist Church with family and close friends attending. Kimmons, Alamogordo High School graduate, studied at the University of New Mexico. Ferrisi, Los Angeles native, served three years in the Coast Guard and works at Radio Station KSFR in Santa Fe.

Echo Keith popular local girl chosen as the most beautiful in the Southwest with red hair and green eyes. She is secretary to county agent Walter H. Wade and was selected from entrants in El Paso and nearby towns. The honor was awarded at a Western dance in the Crystal Ballroom Hotel Cortez with escort Ted Hunt. A personal radio and other prizes were awarded by El Paso merchants. Photographs will be submitted to a national contest in New Jersey with a final tour prize to New York City and a cover on sheet music. Echo is the daughter of Mrs. Lilan Bagwell and granddaughter of pioneer residents A. J. Taylor and family.
Urgent meeting of the Otero County Fair finance committee called for Friday August 8 at 7 30. All committee chairmen are requested to attend to discuss plans and budget for the coming Fair in the Community Center Building.
Father Albert Braun of St. Joseph’s Mission Mescalero reenlists for two more years in the U S Army and will serve as chaplain at San Antonio He previously fought in World War I and II and was a four year Japanese prisoner after Bataan He plans to return to Mescalero upon retirement with Fr Marelan of San Carlos taking charge in his absence.
Two teams of student pilots in training with the Almogordo Flying Service will compete over the field at 3 p m Sunday in a bombing dropping contest. A spot landing contest is another feature of the program. The event will be open to the public and rides will be offered after the contest.

Mike Damiania of Denver was sent to El Paso for care after a car wreck near Iowwell that fractured a vertebra. Luther Hawkins and Barney Caton sustained foot injuries while playing ball at the Rotary Lions game Wednesday.

State of New Mexico v Manuel Castillo heard by Justice James A Tatum. Sheriff Ray Prather swore the complaint. Allan Walker of Alamogordo represented the defendant. Castillo was held to the new term of district court in bonds of 500 dollars. A related Weed t case saw several defendants fined ten dollars each for disorderly conduct. the case was appealed to district court.
Chamber of Commerce officials discussed plans for a Community Chest in Alamonodo this fall to consolidate charitable drives and reduce duplication. Mrs. Ray A. Allen arrived from El Paso to be with her husband at Providence Hospital after a gasoline explosion incident at the Bloneen Flood Camp severely injured him. his condition is reported as slightly improved.
Hospital notes report Juan Garcia son of Manuel and Gareia of La Law treated Thursday for a badly lacerated finger after thumb crush injury. David Davalos of Meccalero had hernia surgery Friday and was moved to Meccalero hospital Monday. Mrs Jon Lyles admitted to surgery Tuesday and is recovering well. Daten underwent major surgery Wednesday with satisfactory condition.
Albuquerque New Mexico was first settled in 1706 by Spanish colonists. The town was named to honor the Spanish viceroy of New Mexico at that period.
M. R. Prestridge announces a 7 percent hourly raise for all employees at the mill here and in the woods. New wage rises bring pay to 107 percent per hour, boosting annual payroll by about 90 000 to 100 000. The operation is organized under the Sawmill Workers of the Carpenter and Joiners of America with locals at the mill and in the woods.

Mrs Lois Beavers Powers formerly of Alamogordo now in Jaurens South Carolina is spending a few weeks with her mother Mrs Willie Beavers in Hollywood. She plans to return to South Carolina after a short visit. Mrs Anne Scott Wood of El Paso recently stayed with Mrs Oar Shenfield. Wood and Shenfield were longtime neighbors in Choudcroft.
