Sleeping Sickness Claims Mike Stanhope
The death of Mike Stanhope aged 35 at his Florida and St corner home followed a week illness diagnosed by three physicians as sleeping sickness or socophilitis lethargica. He was a fireman for M. R. Prestridge Co and survived by his widow and two children. Funeral services were held at Geren Leadinghous Mortuary with interment local. New barley variety G2518 developed by the New Mexico College of Agriculture is released to select members of the New Mexico Crop Improvement Association for testing. Trials show high yields under local conditions as a pasture and rain crop with strong winter carrying capacity and good grain yields when stock are moved in late winter or early spring. Word reached here of the death of Kimberlain Carlisle 42 a native of Otero county near Featherfalls California last Saturday in an automobile accident. Details of the crash are lacking. He was born in the Penasco and grew to manhood in the Sacramento Mountains. He is survived by his estranged wife Bessie Butler now in Flagstaff Arizona and their three daughters Patty Dorothy and Louise.

Boy Drowns In Hope Water Tank Tragedy
Oscar Preece, 15, drowned in the Hope town water tank after entering with Curtis Harrison for a swim. Harrison tried to save him but both men struggled. Isham Harrison and Joe Kenrick reached shore with the body. The victim was carried to Artesia for aid but died.

Southwest Strike Ends After Two Days at Lumber Co
After a two day lay off by Southwest Lumber Co workers on strike Friday and Saturday a new wage agreement was reached Sunday with a nine cent per hour raise for all employees. Negotiations began last Wednesday and concluded Saturday noon and the settlement sets a minimum pay of 45 cents per hour for common laborers with a re opening of talks to discuss wage adjustments for skilled crafts at the mill.
