Exchange papers note a supermarket offers a Gas-n-Shop fueling service while customers park in a large lot. The next day another page features four large words We Don’t Sell Groceries signed by several filling stations. Competition grows fierce across business fields.

Jack Baxley leads Optimist Little League coverage as CYO and Lions clash in a big league style outing. The piece notes growing crowds, improved play, and a Friday CYO versus Rotary match promising strong action for the midgets. Also mentions Rotary noon time change, golf tourney buzz, fair book ahead, and the Progress Edition due August 19.
A Tuesday night meeting in Tularosa reviewed drilling a water supply well by the Tularosa Community Ditch Corporation. It was decided that the corporation commissioners will call a stockholders meeting on a date to be announced to further discuss the issue.
Police Captain Clarence Walker said a charge of failing to grant right of way was filed Tuesday night against Adofo Apodaca after his car rammed James Dwayne Anderson’s vehicle at 7th Street and Delaware Avenue. Both cars sustained minor damage and neither driver was seriously injured.
Funeral services were held for John Arthur Balsley 51 at Mullins Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel. He died Monday at his home 1102 Vermont Ave. The Rev H H Allen officiated. He was employed by Radio Plane company and is survived by wife Marie and son John Kimball Balsley. Interment was in Fort Scott Kansas.
HAFB airs an El Paso TV preview of Indian dances by Mescalero performers led by Wilbur Red Elk and John Shanto as part of Mescalero Indian Day planning at Holloman Aug 22. Eight dances including war and round dances were shown with Richard Shanto performing Eagle and Hoop dances. Ronnie Evans sang Indian songs between numbers during a 12 noon to 1 pm program for base personnel only.
The W. C. Kruger Co. announced via A. M. Basden that Alamogordo Training Center will gain a second story. The plan includes a new first floor room, a freight elevator, and a fire escape. Frank Tatsch of Silver City is contractor, with a 120 day completion target.
Jess Ramsey, committee chair, reports an outside fire district for Tularosa does not seem feasible after reviewing regulations. The panel will continue study and seek a second water pumper to provide outside city limits service for a definite charge.
Convening at 5 p.m. with representatives of Baptist Churches in the area, the Associational Workers Conference opens at the First Baptist Church. A banquet will follow at 6 p.m. and the evening program begins at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited.
Gen George C Marshall faced criticism from Sen Joseph R McCarthy this week while President Eisenhower defended the long serving officer. Eisenhower warned of a possible Republican split but would stand on the McCarthy censure issue. Plains Electric Cooperative dedicated a 5.8 million dollar plant at Algodones drawing about 300 attendees and feeding 12 state rural co-ops. Archer Nelson of REA said the project will boost electrical power across New Mexico.
Senator McCarthy issues a 3500 word statement defending his investigatory methods after the 36 day Army hearings. Two strong protests were sent to Communist China denouncing air attacks on a British transport and American rescue planes. Vice Foreign Minister Chang Han-Fu said Peiping radio that the U S violated air space over Hainan as two Red planes were shot down. notes were returned.
Burial services and interment for David Alton Goodwin Jr., infant son of Pfc. and Mrs. David Alton Goodwin, who died August 3 at HAFB hospital, were held Wednesday at Moncure. Mullins- Hamilton Funeral home managed arrangements.
A New Mexico Farm Bureau measure seeks community control over underground water districts. If adopted the plan becomes a bill for the next Legislature, with local committees to work with the state engineer on water surveys.
About 700 attendees are expected for the Otero County Electric Cooperative annual membership meeting at Cloudcroft High School gym on Saturday starting at 10 a m. New officers will be elected. A free barbecue will be served at noon along with numerous door prizes. Last year 750 attended. this year may exceed that figure as members from hot valley areas are drawn by Cloudcroft climate.
Continental DC-3 service begins between Albuquerque and El Paso with two daily flights. Flight 21 departs Albuquerque at 4:45 p m reaching El Paso at 6:26 p m after a stop at Holloman Air Force Base. Flight 2 leaves El Paso at 7 a m and arrives in Albuquerque at 8:41 a m.
Chicago leader William J. Jerrick appoints John H. Rhinesmith as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler for the New Mexico South district. The district covers Alamogordo Artesia Carlsbad Hobbs Las Cruces Lordsburg Roswell and Silver City. Rhinesmith, a past Exalted Ruler of Silver City No 413, departs August 13 for regional conferences in Salt Lake City.
Col J Gillis of the New Mexico Wing and Capt John L Oliver visited the Carrizozo CAP unit. Five CAP members aided the Highway 54 dedication by air and ground photos with Capt ann Mrs Oliver Lt C E Burns Weldon and Lt Carl J Vickey present. Burns said the local CAP unit is eager to support civic functions in Lincoln County.
The Elkins of 1523 Cuba Ave has been hospitalized at Geraldhamp ton Memorial Hospital and returned home Wednesday night. He is much improved and able to receive visitors.
City bid for a half ton pickup drew two local dealers to a 50 cent gap Hendrix McKinley Motor Co won at 1424.50 Sacramento Motor Co set 1425.00 Ford bid. City Attorney Allan Walker noted the closeness and predicted a Ford delivery with near Chevrolet odds. Four other bidders ranged from 1449.95 to 1519.09 on other cars. Pickup to be delivered immediately.
Alamogordo plans a big fall with about 3 000 students expected to enroll by end of the first month and 3 400 by year’s end. W Barnie Caton reports growth across six schools as additions, expanded courses, and two visiting teachers aid absorption.
