In Alamogordo a gray bearded man of about sixty with one eye and a grimy appearance is seen daily on the street. Despite his rags he and his wife operate a coal plant valued near 100000. They shovel coal together amid extreme heat, without artificial warmth.
Dr J W Long of Tularosa reports he expects heavy migration to the Alamogordo valley starting September 1 with about 5000 people settling within a year. He has answered 7000 letters from homeseekers in two years and 441 replies came from one Southwest Trail advertisement. H Campbell, from near Knoxville Tennessee, left Alamogordo after a week visit and plans to return with his family later this month.
County superintendent Lacy Simms says the Otero county teachers institute opens in this city August 12 for a twelve day session. At least forty local teachers are expected with many from outside the county. Prof. T W Conway of Raton will lead the program with possible help from Prof. Charles D George of Alamogordo.
Dr O W Miller has been elected secretary and business manager of the Alamo Base Ball association The move aims to run the club on a business basis and strengthen the team by adding four or five new players Nelson's return is awaited before scheduling games The management plans El Paso and Albuquerque tournaments participation.
The senate confirmed Merritt Mechem of Tucumcari Saturday as associate justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court after one opposition senator withdrew. James Hunter resigns from the school board claiming lack of time. County Superintendent Lacy Sims will name a successor soon.
