In a Washington scene echoing 19th century debates, 61 senators from 24 Democrats and 37 Republicans urge moving a resolution to the President to slash all budget appropriations by five to ten percent. Senator O Mahoney of Wyoming denounces the move as surrendering congressional power to the executive.
The House trimmed most appropriations while the Senate dallied and used special bills to pay staff. The Senate restored some cuts and now urges the President to impose broad cuts, a move the House rejects. The rhetoric masks a federal deficit over a billion dollars with no will to balance the budget.
The Senate plans to move into the old Supreme Court chamber to repair the roof install air conditioning and improve acoustics. Senator Lodge of Massachusetts opposed spending on the project calling it changing the chamber’s historic look and bad taste but lost two chair appeals and the amendments failed. The cost is around 2.3 million dollars with prior approvals in earlier Congresses.
Voters in New Mexico on September 20 will decide ten proposed constitutional amendments from the 19th Legislature. The measures include absentee voting, district judge salaries, a five man highway commission, probate court powers, extending veterans tax exemptions, city county mergers, state institution regent terms, permanent oil gas mineral fund, and legislator pay for attendance and travel.
A four year old El Paso girl Janice Marian Ward died when her father's car skidded and overturned near Tularosa. Her mother Mrs. Oliver Ward and grandmother Mrs. G W Anderson were injured. Anderson with a possible fractured collar bone, both treated at local hospitals.
Marion Alexander of Clovis Grand Master of 1OOF New Mexico conferred first degree work at the local Odd Fellows Lodge Monday night. He was accompanied by cars from Tularosa and Alamogordo lodges to Carrizozo for Tuesday night. He was assisted by E A Grissom Jr past master and James I Anderson treasurer of the New Mexico encampment. He also spoke to the junior lodge.
Otero and Lincoln County coaches and non teaching members of the Sacramento S association will meet at the local high school on Sunday August 28. The New Mexico Coaches and Officials school runs August 8 to 13 in Albuquerque at the University of New Mexico. Examinations for affiliation will be by Charles B Sweeney with one other exam offered this year. Main topics include rule changes for the 1949 50 season and a film on football rule changes followed by officer elections.
Three El Paso youths were in a car that overturned east of Tularosa while returning from Roswell and Ruidoso. Driver Bobby Madrid, 17, suffered minor scalp lacerations. Edgar Jimenez, 19, had multiple facial cuts. Robert Davis, 15, was uninjured. They received care at Rousseau Hospital before transport to El Paso by Harding and Orr ambulance.
Two 16 man teams will play an 18 hole match at Cloudcroft Sunday. The teams are composed of Alamagordo men and Holloman AF Base personnel. Play begins at 8 00 a m with a chuck wagon lunch after the round.
Sunshine welcomed Otero County residents to the Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital dedication service in Alamogordo. The event honored founder Gerald Champion and featured remarks by L A Hendrix and Mose Cauthen, with music by Holloman AFB band and a 198 dinner for attendees. The project followed years of community effort, with donors from local and El Paso groups contributing to the hospital’s completion.
Final rites for Mrs. Clinton Weems 34 died of a heart attack at her Eugene Oregon home were held in Leadinghaus Mullins Chapel with burial at James Canyon Cemetery. She was a native of Otero County and survived by her husband four step-daughters a son and her parents plus two brothers and a sister.
Truett Smith of Hot Springs and Las Cruces buys Walter Sullivan's interest in the Alamo Tire Shop north of town. Smith, formerly with Ben Shook in Las Cruces and now associated with founder Charles Bonnell, attended State College and is single.
At the August 2 session the Alamogordo Board of Education approved current bills and teacher and janitor salaries per the spring budget. Mrs Frank A Hunter Jr was elected school nurse replacing ill retiree Juanita Baldonado. A gift piano from the 1949 senior class was accepted for the high school music department.
Col Baynes outlined a pending Wherry Spencer bill to authorize private contractors to build and lease housing for Holloman Air Force Base personnel and civilians. The plan would fund up to 90 percent of costs, limit base projects to five million dollars per base, and prioritize initial units for officers and enlisted men while surveying local housing needs.
Alamogordo school superintendent W Barnie Caton returned from Washington to press for special building funds and Maintenance and Operation aid for Alamogordo and nearby districts. He cited Senate Bill 2191 and House Bill 8829 as likely sources, noting about 175 schools could gain roughly seven and a half million dollars for maintenance and operation deficits in defense area districts.
State Patrolman Al Hathaway reported officers killed a small coral snake near Highway 54 eight miles south of town while setting up a road block for a stolen El Paso vehicle. The venomous bite can paralyze and kill quickly, with few survivors known.
G M Hunter announces USO sponsorship of a weekend trip for about 30 servicemen from Holloman AFB and White Sands Proving Grounds to Fowler's Dude Ranch in Ruidoso. Activities include swimming riding and meals planned for this Saturday and Sunday.
Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital opened a day early after an emergency case arrived at 0:80 Monday. The first patient was Decoy Lee Tefft, three, with acute bronchial pneumonia. Several operations and births occurred on opening day including an appendectomy and breast tumor removal. The last Rousseau Hospital patient a ten pound boy named Gary was released to home. Night supervisor and staff described as efficient in caring for the Tefft child.
General Jonathan M. Wainwright, retired hero of Corregidor, makes an unofficial visit to Holloman Air Force Base. He arrives by private Cessna from Roswell with four in his party, meets Lt Col Wells Collett and Lt Col Earl McFarland, and departs for El Paso after touring the airstrip.
The 28th Inter Tribal Ceremonial will be held in Gallup New Mexico from August 11 to 14. Howard Wilson, president of the Inter Tribal Indian Ceremonial Association, announces the event. Five local tribes participate with authentic dances rites sports and crafts presented to the public.
