The New Mexico Highway Commission will let multiple road contracts on August 12 and August 19, totaling about a million dollars. The Alamogordo Tularosa project on August 12 covers 11.92 miles with grading drainage bridges and base surfacing, estimated to cost over $200,000.
The Southern Pacific Railway petitions the New Mexico State Corporation Commission to abandon its Three Rivers station in Otero county citing declines in passenger and freight traffic and arguing the station imposes unnecessary burden. The filing date is July 29 1932 and a hearing must be held within 60 days with burden on the petitioner to prove the petition by substantial evidence.
The Weissinger murder at a Memphis store left Jack McElroy Weissinger dead after a failed robbery attempt. A handwritten notice on the Chelsea avenue door stated the shop was closed due to his death. Mrs Weissinger assists detectives while a young daughter endures the trauma.
The Otero County Board of Education met at the county superintendent's office Monday August 1 with members J M Walker R B Fields O G Cady J L Lawson and superintendent A E Thomas presiding They awarded ten pupil transportation contracts from 49 bidders with each contract going to the lowest bidder Routes include High Rolls La Luz Alamogordo Mescalero Bent Tularosa Perk Canyon Weed Elk horn Weed Bluewater Weed Stelworth Weed Rivers Tularosa Cox Canyon Cloudcroft James Canyon Cloudcroft Escondida Alamogordo and the successful bidders must carry 25000 casualty insurance pending August 20 bond and equipment approvals by an expert mechanic.
An Alamogordo resident warns housewives to can now as Elberta peaches near seasonal end and trucks from Roswell and other points already harvest the crop. Grower Ben Apel notes several trucks in his southeast field with three more in harvest today. Plums and prunes are scarce, with later peaches in September.
State welfare official Mrs. Tom Charles reports past year relief spending in Otero County by the commission Alamo Verde United Charities and the Tularosa Woman's Club totaled about 4000 with 1500 garments provided by United Charities and similar aid from churches and individuals for about 100 people. Sixty barrels of Red Cross flour were distributed and 75 more are being requisitioned. The county budget for indigent relief was 1800 last year and proved inadequate. Officials anticipate greater need next year as new cases emerge from mountain areas and Orogrande pending employment improvements.
At the Hunt and Agnew Guernsey Farm on Cuba Avenue fourteen of eighteen calves born to Guernsey stock in fourteen months were heifers. Manager M. I. Hunt says pre-natal sex control experiments may influence offspring sex. He stresses results are preliminary and will take several years to prove success or failure.
Mildred Sloan, 10 years old, died Sunday July 31 at her grandmother Mrs. G S Russell's home in Wheeler Texas after an appendectomy. Born in Corona New Mexico, she lived most of her life in Alamogordo. Survived by brothers James Alamogordo and William Deming and sisters Una and Frances Alamogordo. Interment at Wheeler Texas.
The executive committee of the Otero County Republican organization will meet Thursday night August 4 in Alamogordo to discuss campaign plans. Republican leaders from across the county are expected to attend.

A Mountain States Inspection Bureau representative praised Alamogordo’s fire squad for rapid progress in equipment and training. The department uses chemicals to extinguish recent fires with little water, builds a practice structure for ladders and hoses, and outfits firefighters with helmets coats and gas masks. Citizens are urged to yield to emergency vehicles when the fire whistle sounds.
Senator Borah, chairing the Foreign Affairs Committee, says he will probe the U S Canada St Lawrence deep waterway treaty, amid fierce opposition from Illinois Chicago New York and other states over water diversion costs federal versus state control of hydroelectric power and the treaty price tag of about 280 million dollars.
Ranger Laney of High Rolls station and his family returned Sunday from a several day motor trip extending as far as Arizona, according to local notes from Lincoln Forest.
Asst. Supervisor S Strickland returned from the Penasco district where he aided Ranger R I Boone in surveying a critical telephone line from Mayhill to Cloudcroft. The proposed line would greatly improve message routing between the two points which has long relied on distant connecting lines.
The Forest Service loans a tractor, grader, frescoes, and other equipment to Fort Stanton authorities to straighten road curves on the Fort Stanton to Capitan route. The dangerous sections have caused fatalities and many near misses.
Lincoln county has a force of men at work on the Ruidoso road up the river from the Junction. A few hundred dollars will be spent in putting this road into better shape. It has a very heavy traffic over it.
National Forestry Lecturer H N Wheeler will speak in the high school auditorium on August 22. The Tulsa Chamber of Commerce lauds his work in Oklahoma as exceptional and recommends his talk as a valuable event for the community.

A letter from the El Paso Chamber of Commerce announces that Mrs Georgia Burlingham Carmichae foreign representative of the Tourist Department of Mexico and other officials will visit Alamogordo soon for the Torreon Fair 25th anniversary events on September 14 and 15.
Sheriff Danley and deputy Leo Mcleod escorted Mrs. Betty Long to the state asylum at Las Vegas amid reports she had been under neighbors’ care near Bent. The same weekend Tom Jonas was sent to the penitentiary for 18 months to two years.

Approximately 20000 dollars of forest service road funds will surface the section of highway 83 between Mayhill and Cloudcroft. An additional 2500 dollars is set for surveying a new road from High Rolls to Cloudcroft. The remaining 82500 dollars will blacktop from the Lincoln National Forest east to the Mescalero boundary. A new Mayhill to Weed route is surveyed and Weed to Sacramento Assembly work is being surveyed. An emergency fund may allow Mayhill to Weed work before season end.
George M. Jemison of the Forest Service explains how dry heat and wind feed forest fires. The Freeman Lake blaze in Idaho last August consumed 5 miles by 11 miles in one day, with scattered spot fires from burning brands, illustrating the need to rapidly multiply firefighting forces.
The Tularosa New Mexico gathering lists the day’s schedule with morning prayer song readings committee reports and sermons. Rev L D Jordan Carrizozo preaches the noon sermon and Rev J C Blalock Rev George F L Elam and Earl R Keating chair the day’s sessions including missions education and liquor traffic reports.
The Otero County board of commissioners met Monday with all members present. Chairman Col J E Edpington of Alamogordo J R Nelson of Tularosa and C A Rediec of Cloudcroft presided. They appointed Tom J Pittman of Cloudcroft as justice of the peace succeeding Mrs Lottie Baxter who resigned earlier.
The board could not draw warrants for the 1932-3 budget as final approval is pending. A few warrants were drawn on the court house and jail fund and the indigent fund.
The board noted a greater demand for indigent funds with several new cases. It ordered a 2567 cut on all indigent allowances except one court recommended case. Officials justify the cut by lower living costs and budget concerns, calling the situation a serious problem.
A county road matter from Valmont drew petitions for and against. A three member board Jim Swope J Strooks and Andy Taylor recommended building a new road section east of Valmont. The board authorized construction and payment of 15 to Sam mons plus land compensation. Robinson agrees to move fences and swap land at his expense. Land involved lies in section 18.
Charles Francis Braswell aged 25 died at his parents home in La Luz on Monday after a tuberculosis illness. Funeral services were held at the family home and he was buried at Mount Vista cemetery. Born July 25 1907 in Los Angeles he moved with his family to Alamogordo two years ago. He learned locksmithing in youth and is survived by his parents one brother and one sister.
We express deep appreciation for the sympathy and services shown by many friends during illness and death of our loved one Mrs. Allen Adams. The Adams and King families thank Mr and Mrs Otto Adams Mr and Mrs Ben Adams Mrs Maud King and Mr and Mrs Charles Wilson for their kindness.
Prohibition officers Howard Beacham with deputies Fred Crosby and Norris Green raided K. L. Tuton’s Elk area ranch after a tip. They found a still, mash, and old plant sites, then questioned Tuton who led them to the brush still. Tuton and 21-year-old Hogal Hall posted $1,000 bonds each. Hall’s bondsman was Tuton. Other locals faced liquor charges with bonds set.
Allen Adams 56 died at his home near Bent last Saturday. Funeral services were held Sunday with interment in the local cemetery. Cubla Clayton gave a short address at the funeral. Adams and his wife moved to Tularosa six years ago, ran a tourist cafe for about a year, then a small Bent area store, later selling out but remaining nearby. He is survived by his widow and one stepdaughter, and was held in high regard by many friends. Mrs Adams left for Amarillo and Oklahoma early this week for an extended stay.
