Wallace Johnson arrives from Las Cruces to replace the late Leslie Beaty as county agent. He is a Hope native familiar with Sacramento Valley agriculture and expects his wife and 2 year old daughter to join him later, likely residing in Cloudcroft.
After 15 years in Alamogordo, Miss Edith Welsheimer leaves to teach English in Las Cruces public schools. Hundreds of graduates owe her thanks for faithful instruction and personal guidance beyond the curriculum.

Announcement of the marriage between Ruth Hisser ich of Hollywood California and A Kenneth Tatum formerly of Alamogordo. The ceremony was held Thursday July 27 at the First Baptist Church Hollywood. The bride, a Hollywood High School and business college graduate, has worked secretarially. The groom, son of J A and Mrs J A Tatum, is a New Mexico State College electrical engineering graduate now working in the War Research division at Columbia University.
In the Methodist Church on Tuesday evening August 1 Miss Evelyn Stevens daughter of Mr and Mrs Elbert T Stevens of Alamogordo New Mexico married Lt W E Nelson son of Mr and Mrs W L Nelson of Clovis New Mexico The ceremony was officiated by Rev E J Sloan with music by Mrs Silas Storrs The couple will reside in Alamogordo where he serves as assistant Post Exchange officer at the Army Air Base
Boyd Lucas, an Otero county native and Solomon Islands campaign veteran who was wounded, arrived Wednesday on furlough to stay with his sisters Mrs. Arthur Landers and Mrs. Evelyn Ingwall and their families. He has received medical care in New Zealand San Francisco and Santa Fe hospitals.
Ruth Noberta Johnson daughter of Mr and Mrs Dan Johnson of Alamogordo New Mexico graduated recently from the Naval Training School Yeoman-W on the Iowa State Teachers College Campus Cedar Falls Iowa Her training followed recruit aptitude testing and civilian experience and covered shorthand typing Naval correspondence records and forms and current events She is proficient in writing and dictation in English and Spanish and is an Alamogordo High School graduate.
Press dispatches report Captain Alonzo E. Baird of the Steamboat unit received the Bronze Star for valor in France. He served with 40 infantry comrades since D Day June 6 and hails from the Otero county pioneer family. A Tularosa High School and A and M College Las Cruces graduate.
The Alamogordo Civil Air Patrol announces a larger scale operation with meetings moved to Alamogordo High School. Meetings run Thursdays at 7 30 p m led by Flight Commander Clarence C Chase Jr and staff. Cadets and local youths 17 and under are encouraged to join and help support the air future.
Washington reports widespread complaints to the Office of Price Administration about shoddy merchandise sold at high prices. Women cite elastic failures in girdles, poor dress fabrics, stockings that run weekly, and overcharged rayon nightgowns and sheets.
Alamogordo firefighters rushed to a blaze at Otis Beam's garage near Cuba Avenue. The fire consumed the structure used as a paint supply store and workshop. Loss to Beam runs to several thousand dollars with small insurance.
The New Mexico Cattle Growers Association will hold its Third Quarterly Executive Board meeting in Albuquerque on September 21 with a preliminary session September 24 at the Hilton Hotel. About 500 ranchers from across the state are expected to attend as the association, with nearly 3000 members, prepares for the busy shipping season and winter feed outlook.
The Children’s Bureau reports 30.9 infant deaths per 1 000 live births and smaller maternal deaths, especially in the South, calling the drop doubly remarkable as it occurs during wartime. Over seven years infant mortality has fallen about one third and maternal deaths by more than half.

Mrs Kontz of Mountain Park returned home Tuesday after a week as a patient. Carolyn Sue James admitted for a tonsillectomy. Mrs Nadine Curry admitted for surgery and returned home Wednesday. Miss Blanche Walker received surgical care during the week. Freddie Mack Goff had a tonsillectomy. Mrs Morris Gendion and baby discharged Monday. Mrs Dick Riffe and baby leaving hospital today. Mrs George Carl remains a patient for medical care. Rogers Snyder admitted for a tonsillectomy. Mrs Stanley Sterlong and Sgt Sterlong leave for furlough in Michigan and Chicago.
Scout Master H N Gibson and Set E O Bedtke led Troop 127 to Zack White Camp near El Paso last week. Members included Billy Dunn Hendrix Roberts Deason Walton Paxton Paxton Tweed and Air Scouts. Several earned merit badges in swimming life saving while Billy Paxton earned his Tenderfoot badge.
A Roswell businessmen syndicate filed for authority to run airline service in New Mexico and seeks a 1 million dollar corporation. They plan routes from Albuquerque Roswell and Las Cruces to about 30 communities with multiple daily flights and CAB consideration.
A European Theater release lists 41 soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Division in France honored for gallantry in action during its advance. Among the awardees are Pfc. Frank Chavez of Alameda and Captain Alonzo E. Baird of Alamogordo, along with members from 19 states.
Mr. and Mrs. EB Melton and their son Henry and wife traveled from Colorado points to Texas for a brief visit. Mr. Melton, Sr. recalls the trip as the hottest he ever felt with temperatures reaching 117 degrees, before returning home to New Mexico.
A sizable crowd watched races at the southeast Alimayverdo tracks last Sunday. A lengthy interval between races due to disputes among horsemen marred the event. The Alamogordo Roping Club, sponsor, has not announced the next meet date.
Mrs Melinda Lee McClellan 45 died at home in Marcia July 27 1944 from natural causes. Funeral at Geren Leadinghaus Mortuary August 3 officiated by Rev Gillenwater Cloudcroft. Interment Tulareosa cemetery. Mrs Eva W Abeyta of Alamogordo received word from the War Department that her son Pvt Raymond Abeyta is a prisoner of the German Government. He was reported missing in action around June 1 in the European theater of war.
Robert Lacy Simms, G. M. 2/e in Torpedo Boat Patrol, begins a 30 day leave after four years of service in the American Defense American Theatre of War and the Asiatic Pacific campaigns. He is joined by his wife from Frankston Texas and visits his parents the Rev and Mrs Lacy Simms and other relatives.
Mr and Mrs Juan Garcia of Saluz were informed by the War Department on Wednesday that their son Jose S Garcia had been wounded in Italy on July 13. The report did not disclose how seriously he was wounded.
Eugene M. Bishop, son of Mrs. Paul D. Holder of Alamogordo, finishes Liberator bomber crew training at Pueblo Army Air Base Colorado. He serves as a gunner and is expected to go overseas soon. His wife Helen M. Bishop resides in Bakersfield California.

Among a list of servicemen wounded in action on several fronts is Pvt Samuel M Barela son of Mrs Tranquilina Madrid Barela of Alamogordo.
The Public Roads Administration reports that at least 10 percent of the nation’s main roads require rebuilding. The announcement suggests substantial roadwork could create thousands of jobs nationwide.
Mr and Mrs Gus Fischer and Ben Craven express gratitude for acts of kindness and assistance during their mother’s illness and passing. They thank the doctor and nurses for easing the final days.
Robert Billups, chief air metal smith in the Naval Air Corps, arrives on a 30 day furlough after 28 months in the South Pacific. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. KE Billups of Alamogordo and hopes to be stationed at Alameda, California for six months. His brothers serve abroad and their youngest brother Charles was killed at Guadalcanal in 1942.
New Mexico growers face August 31 deadline to market the 143 crop of dry beans for eligibility under a revised price support. The CCC extended a July 31 end date for the 143 crop but kept 30 days for the program.
The Otero county ACA committee will issue lumber certificates for essential agricultural uses. Chairman G. V. Clayton notes eligibility is similar to the second quarter and urges farmers to recognize the lumber shortage and use less critical material when possible.
W L Kohen reports a half acre seeded in African lovegrass by J J Pitts in 1942 remains ungrazed by two cows and a work mare. Kohen, with his Jersey cow, yearling heifer, and work mare, must mow again this season. The grass, imported by the Roosevelt Soil Conservation District, gains popularity as a permanent pasture amid a bumper wheat harvest and rising truck crop output. Capt. Oren R. Reichelt of Strauss New Mexico killed in action in the Normandy area on July 3, his wife notified by the War Department. He died on his 24th birthday, son of Mr and Mrs Gus Reichelt of Strauss and a 1941 graduate of New Mexico A and M College. He served in a tank division and went overseas in April.
Officials say protein meal is less scarce as buyers cannot handle additional offers due to 60 day supplies. Exemptions from quotas for the next three months let ranchers secure winter feed early.
