This week reports on rumors of a rift between President Franklin D. Roosevelt and financier Bernard Baruch are denied. Officials emphasize Roosevelt’s fine relations with Baruch and advisors, noting no break in the Brain Trust or among top aides.
Mescalero Indian Agency requests 140000 to fund 252 miles of secondary roads on the Mescalero Reservation over two years under the public works program. No primary highway work is proposed. projects include Mescalero Cloudcroft road and Mescalero Elk road with improvements to existing routes. Roads to be built or upgraded will be surfaced drained and graded to 6 7 percent, 14 to 17 feet wide.
George Reed, 60, Southwest pioneer and cowman, died suddenly from a heart attack Tuesday at the home of Leslie Shaw, 20 miles south of White Signal New Mexico. The body was taken to Silver City for interment. he leaves a sister, Mrs. Stewart of Alamogordo, and other relatives.
Las Cruces launches a drive to push completion of the Las Cruces Alamogordo road before funding is allotted to the El Paso Alamogordo route. A committee led by Chamber of Commerce president David Bronson and Mayor Sam Klein coordinates outreach across southern New Mexico with Eddy and Otero counties pledging support.
Pinon pioneer T F Fleming attacks Alamogordo officials and the Chamber of Commerce for favoring the Cloudcroft route while urging a southern Pinon Alamogordo road via Chatfield Canyon as an all weather link. He argues Pinon Mohair trade suffers if southern roads are neglected and calls for fair treatment and targeted repairs along Sacramento River to Chatfield Hill.
Santa Fe reports $1,944,103 in delinquent taxes collected for the 21st fiscal year ending June 30, the largest 12 month total in the tax commission history. The gain follows new delinquent tax and tax moratorium laws, with costs at $54,226 and $50,179 in prior years, respectively.
Miss Lillian Bell aged 15 died Sunday July 30 at Mrs Ida Wofford's home after a six weeks illness. Born May 10 1918 at Mayhill she was a high school student in Alamogordo. Survived by Charles and Mrs Bell High Rolls parents two sisters Inez and Evelyn and brother Charles Jr. A service was held at Mayhill Cemetery with Rev Earl R Keating. Hazel Pierce sang.

Town authorities urge strict obedience to the new stop signs at the Tenth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue intersection and at New York Avenue intersections with Tenth Street and Ninth Streets. Fred L. Yelton of the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce asked the state highway engineer G D Macy to consider emergency maintenance on the Denney Bridge to Cloudcroft road. He noted $40,000 worth of vegetables would be ready in 60 days and proposed seven days of maintenance with local citizens providing labor free to relieve the bottleneck.
rm. C. Allen of San Antonio Texas asks for information on homestead lands in the state. His letter was sent to the U S Land Office.
R C Bryant of Altimont Kansas writes seeking a suitable site for a variety store and asking whether any local owner would consider a partnership or joint venture with him. He mentions rent considerations but provides no specific terms.
Mrs. W. A. Trotti of 2200 Stanley St Ft Worth Texas asks for complete information on Cloudcroft. Her letter was sent to Roy Thomason for reply.
Mrs. Gertrude J. Cotton of Houston requests general information on Alamo Gordo and the Indian pictographs and excavations nearby. She plans to visit Alamogordo and considers the ruins. Tom Charles thanks Caverns superintendent Thomas Hales for the Carlsbad folder and suggests including White Sands in a future edition.
Leon Cousens will be in Alamo Gordo Friday August 4 to deliver a talk on The Roosevelt Program Will it Restore Prosperity. He will discuss economic recovery and potential prosperity measures.
The first serious wreck on the new road between here and Las Cruces occurred last Sunday when an Oklahoma City party of three in a Ford car left the grade, struck a culvert, and injured Mrs. Stacy who had fractured ribs, Mr. Stacy with a badly broken arm, and Mr. O'Hern with hip injuries. They were rushed to Rousseau Hospital. Miss Velma Gardner, a nurse, accompanied them on a train to Oklahoma.
Christian Endeavor Society members and friends held a party at White Sands Wednesday night in El Paso. Chaperones included Mrs. John W. White Mrs 8 Strickland Mrs J K Bethell and Mrs John Yolland with two special guests Miss Ruth Anna Jackson of Pampa Texas and Miss Edith Clark.

Santa Fe Aug 1 State Land Commissioner Frank Wesley announced that over two million acres of state land have remained unleased for years. A survey aims to explain low revenues and reveal unleased areas to be offered first come first served at three cents per acre. Stockmen can apply to lease lands surrounded by leases at the regular rate to prevent enclosure.
Alamo Gordo businesses enroll under blanket codes amid AR A adjustments. Postmistress Frances Burch notes Rolland’s Drug Store first to enlist, operating under 40 hour week and $13 minimum. Safe Way Stores and others adopt grocery code 48 hour week and $12 minimum. Over 30 more show support while some await individual codes. many face 35 hour weeks and $13 minimum.
In Mountainaire New Mexico Aug 1 a large posse searched Mangano mountains and Gran Juivera country for Jack Layman a 2 year old ex convict sought for fatally wounding Torrance County Deputy Sheriff William Meador last Friday night. Despite 100 to 200 men over three days no clue has surfaced. Deputy Meador is the third officer killed in New Mexico in three weeks with the shooter either captured or slain in the previous cases.
Girl Scouts learn bead work leather work and pottery under instructors Josephine Myers and Hazel Peet from Santa Fe Indian School at Camp Mary White near Cloudcroft for two weeks. About 107 campers enrolled. Cowboy ballads kick off the new camping period started last Sunday. Betty Kolland and Patty Wright from Alamogordo attend. Margaret Ellen Cooper leaves campus.
Delegates from about a dozen southern towns met Sunday at Wingfield Hall Ruidoso to organize the Community Builders Association of Southern New Mexico. H A Kyler led as promoter and pubic relations director as towns pledge cooperation to advertise regional attractions and gateways to Carlsbad Caverns.
County Commissioner O I Winborn and Representative W A Gaye of Pinon returned from Santa Fe where they appeared before the state highway board to push Pinon Clouderos Alamo road as a secondary project. Floyd Inge accompanied them. The Governor reportedly assured them the road is on the state plan for Otero County and encouragement was given that it would appear on the county secondary road list.
