Mescalero seeks 140000 for 252 miles of roads

Mescalero Indian Agency requests 140000 to fund 252 miles of secondary roads on the Mescalero Reservation over two years under the public works program. No primary highway work is proposed. projects include Mescalero Cloudcroft road and Mescalero Elk road with improvements to existing routes. Roads to be built or upgraded will be surfaced drained and graded to 6 7 percent, 14 to 17 feet wide.

George Reed Dies Suddenly at Silver City

George Reed, 60, Southwest pioneer and cowman, died suddenly from a heart attack Tuesday at the home of Leslie Shaw, 20 miles south of White Signal New Mexico. The body was taken to Silver City for interment. he leaves a sister, Mrs. Stewart of Alamogordo, and other relatives.

Las Cruces Seeks Southern NM Backing for Alamo Cruz es Highway

Delinquent Tax Collections Reach New High in New Fiscal Year

Santa Fe reports $1,944,103 in delinquent taxes collected for the 21st fiscal year ending June 30, the largest 12 month total in the tax commission history. The gain follows new delinquent tax and tax moratorium laws, with costs at $54,226 and $50,179 in prior years, respectively.

Death of Miss Lillian Bell in Alamogordo

Miss Lillian Bell aged 15 died Sunday July 30 at Mrs Ida Wofford's home after a six weeks illness. Born May 10 1918 at Mayhill she was a high school student in Alamogordo. Survived by Charles and Mrs Bell High Rolls parents two sisters Inez and Evelyn and brother Charles Jr. A service was held at Mayhill Cemetery with Rev Earl R Keating. Hazel Pierce sang.

CARE AT STOP SIGNS IN TENTH STREET INTERSECTION

Town authorities urge strict obedience to the new stop signs at the Tenth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue intersection and at New York Avenue intersections with Tenth Street and Ninth Streets. Better Road to Haul $40,000 Worth of Vegetables

Fred L. Yelton of the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce asked the state highway engineer G D Macy to consider emergency maintenance on the Denney Bridge to Cloudcroft road. He noted $40,000 worth of vegetables would be ready in 60 days and proposed seven days of maintenance with local citizens providing labor free to relieve the bottleneck.

First Bad Accident On New Road July 30

The first serious wreck on the new road between here and Las Cruces occurred last Sunday when an Oklahoma City party of three in a Ford car left the grade, struck a culvert, and injured Mrs. Stacy who had fractured ribs, Mr. Stacy with a badly broken arm, and Mr. O'Hern with hip injuries. They were rushed to Rousseau Hospital. Miss Velma Gardner, a nurse, accompanied them on a train to Oklahoma.

Fugitive Ex-convict Sought in Deputy Meador Slaying

In Mountainaire New Mexico Aug 1 a large posse searched Mangano mountains and Gran Juivera country for Jack Layman a 2 year old ex convict sought for fatally wounding Torrance County Deputy Sheriff William Meador last Friday night. Despite 100 to 200 men over three days no clue has surfaced. Deputy Meador is the third officer killed in New Mexico in three weeks with the shooter either captured or slain in the previous cases.

Pinon Delegation Wins Support for Alamo Road Project

County Commissioner O I Winborn and Representative W A Gaye of Pinon returned from Santa Fe where they appeared before the state highway board to push Pinon Clouderos Alamo road as a secondary project. Floyd Inge accompanied them. The Governor reportedly assured them the road is on the state plan for Otero County and encouragement was given that it would appear on the county secondary road list.
