A Mexican named E. Que das, employed by Southwest Sawmill, lost his right foot Tuesday afternoon when his leg was caught in a wood saw. He received first aid from Dr. McKinley, was treated at Rousseau hospital, and is expected to recover with possible limping in a few weeks.
About three o clock this morning the Cloudcroft pavilion was found ablaze. The fire destroyed the building and its contents including a bowling alley cafe piano picture machine and wireless set. Incendiarism is suspected while the origin remains unknown.
Mr. and Mrs. Woodworth entertained at dinner Tuesday with guests Mr. and Mrs. Agnew, Mr. and Mrs. Newell, Mrs. Woodworth, and Miss Hugo. Mrs. Sherry and daughter Sallie Helen plan to depart for Cisco, Texas after visiting here. Recent gatherings were hosted by Mrs. Brenegar, Mrs. Mechem, Mrs. White in honor of Mrs. Sherry.
A party of ladies will tour White Sands this evening starting at six o'clock. The group is honorary to Mrs Gilliam of Stanton Tennessee and includes Mrs Gilliam Miss Eide Mrs Salton and Mrs Seamans led by C K Fowler.
Rev. A. N. Porter returned from Gatesville where he visited relatives and his mother in Hughes Springs. Mrs. Porter and the sons are due back in Alamogordo late next week.
Sheriff Beacham accompanied two condemned men from Alamogordo to Estancia for Friday’s execution. The trio, all natives of Old Mexico, faced the scaffold with mixed resolve as the widow Mrs Coury observed. Two men died by neck breaking, one by strangulation, with one refusing last rites. Beacham returned to Alamogordo Saturday.
A grand masque ball is planned at Tom Bells pavilion Saturday night August 6 with a large crowd expected. Mr Bell has arranged a five piece orchestra from Fort Bliss including saxophone violin drums trombone and piano and an after dance dinner at the Highrolls hotel.
Rush orders for job printing receive immediate attention with instruction to phone the News at 134 for fast service.
The Literary Digest poll on prohibition and a federal soldier bonus drew national notice with results showing 101 475 in favor of strict enforcement of the 18th Amendment, 181 704 soldiers favoring the Volstead law, 196 864 for modifying wine and beer, and 233 613 in favor of a federal bonus for all World War I veterans against 241 440. Samuel Gompers criticized prohibition, urging modification of the Volstead Act to permit regulated beer and light wines to reduce social unrest.
The Digest publishes a symposium of opinions from prominent men on the poll questions. The piece surveys diverse viewpoints and highlights the central issues debated by leading voices.
A factor in the poll will be the returns from ballots sent to 2,000,000 women nationwide. Some say women oppose repeal or modification but favor strict dryness, while others disagree. The ballots on prohibition and the soldier bonus aim to clarify women’s stance.
Miss Ruth Morgan concluding three years teaching domestic science and art under the Smith Hughes act finished her work July 31 in Alamogordo. She spent part of the week on a vocational trip to Cloudcroft with friends. If she leaves Alamogordo for home in Kansas next week her summer project work for younger girls has been completed and the pupils’ sewing canning and cooking tasks are finished.
President Harding held a key Washington conference with RR executives and shopmen leaders to urge resolution of the seniority dispute and return to work. Hoover led a national emergency plan routing cars and coal distribution through the ICC with state coordination and a presidential committee to set price baselines.
President Farrington of the Illinois miners proposed a state level convention of local unions in Peoria on August 8 to discuss operators peace proposals. The next day he rescinded the call as publicity proved premature. Acting Governor Sterling urged a return to work at April 1 terms pending tribunal readjustment.
N J Cleve Dean, chair of the railway employees publicity group, telegrams President Harding denouncing use of military force or conscription to run mines or railroads. He warns of a capital vs labor war and claims Republican hostility to farmers and workers. Harding rebukes partisan references and defends government for all citizens.
The Chicago street car dispute stretched toward a strike with Mahon urging a referendum on a new company proposal. Quinlan warned workers to expect no offer satisfactory to employers, and a mass meeting was set for Monday to decide on action beginning Tuesday.
In the senate debate on the tariff McCumber recalled a 1912 claim by newsprint spokesmen that excluding newsprint from the free list would defeat the Republican party at the polls. Other senators pressed for names and Smoot cited John I Norris of the publishers association warning a duty on newsprint would drive the Republican party from power.
Cloudcroft residents promote a two day festival on Aug 7 and 8 with cow boy races, military drills, ball games, clowns, and daily Eighth Cavalry band concerts. Prizes await roping riding and broncho busting. A Sunday baseball game features Cloudcroft versus agency Indians.
Santa Fe New Mexico July 31 The Republican state central committee will meet in Santa Fe on Saturday August 5 to decide time and place for the state convention.
Friends in Alamogordo mourn the death of Mrs Sophia Luscombe who died in Lexington Kentucky during a visit to her daughter. She would have turned 79 on September 27. Her illness was brief from acute stomach trouble. Daughter Mrs P A Ross was in California and could not attend the funeral.
Mrs. Clark Baker, regent from the N. M. I. B., attended a meeting in Alamogordo with the Roswell delegation as the sole out of town member. Several locals depart for California, Iowa, and Chicago for family visits, tours, and extended trips while others welcome guests and plan a Chautauque reading circle.
Alamogordo lost a fast game in El Paso last Sunday 31 to 1. Babe Ruths hit a home run and dominated the action while Norman pitched for Alamogordo with ten strikeouts. The next games pit Legion against Alamogordo at Alamo and Purity against Babe Ruths at El Paso.
Fred Makael and his wife plus their two young children began the Beaumont return trip after Makael pursued his wife and another man from Beaumont last week. Andrew Latham from Beaumont is in hiding. Officer Jim Haynes lost him at Tularosa awaiting news from Alamogordo. The couple had lived as man and wife in High rolls since April. The husband proposed the wife return to her mother with fare for herself and children provided, and the oldest child to be kept by him if she behaved. Officers expect a reconciliation on the journey back as the family departs together.

Verner Clayton Helen Wilford and Harvey Robinson visited for tonsil surgery. Mrs. Paxton of Mayhill left after weeks for home. Mrs. Zeno Craft resumed home care after surgical treatment. Mrs. Holley, injured in a Box Canyon accident months ago, has gone home to El Paso.

Mr and Mrs H J Dekker and their son Hubert return from a ten day visit in Denver where they stayed with a brother and two sisters. Dekker notes cool weather despite Denver locals joking about heat. He works as a brakeman on the Cloudcroft run.
James Tatum returned from a trip to Sonora Mexico last week as the Southwest Lumber Co representative. He fell behind a washout on a Mexican railway and rode all night in a mule-drawn stage. He says an American can be treated as a native if he stays quiet.
Miss Emily LeMin formerly of Alamogordo with her parents left on No 3 for her El Paso home after a month visiting friends in Alamogordo and at Mescalero.
Joe Williams arrived from El Paso last Friday for a week long family visit. He checked out up to date styles and summer footwear at Wolfinger's store.
