Two 20-something inmates, one charged federally with auto theft and another with check forging at Cloudcroft, nearly escaped from the Otero county jail last Saturday night. Jail staff suspect undetected work on bars and a plan thwarted when two colored inmates alerted jailer Mrs. McNatt. the pair were handcuffed, then later found with opened cuffs.
Santa Fe reports 165 prosecutions for game and fish law violations in the fiscal year ended June 30, up from 132. Offenses include hunting or fishing without licenses 67 out of season 17 on refuges 20 and a broad misc category 61. Fines and costs totaled nearly 5500 with jail in some cases. one 90 day sentence. State Game Warden Erik L. Perry cites better patrols and sportmens' conservation sentiment as factors.
The first ten days of July were hot with no or trace precipitation. The second and last ten days cooled to comfortable levels with minimal rain. The 4th of July reached 102 degrees, and total July precipitation at Alamogordo station was 0.79 inches, well below normal.
Tularosa Baptist Church invites the public to Sunday Bible school at 10 and preaching at 11 with special music. A 3:30 p m Sunbeam program is planned and Wednesday features a service of song and Bible study. Pastor Thaywood extends the invitation.
Santa Fe reports Kyle S Crichton's Law and Order Ltd about Elfego Baca releasing July 1 by Santa Fe Publishing. The book portrays Baca and 80s 90s New Mexico with unpublished tales of Billy the Kid Joe Fowler and figures Villa Madero Huerta Orozco and Fall and Bull Andrews.
East Vaughn July 31 Cal Charles A Lindbergh landed here last night due to engine trouble and was delayed again today. He was to depart for Detroit at 9:30 this morning but a missing fire in a cylinder and fuel line issues hindered progress. Lindbergh, with his mechanic, arrived from Los Angeles in six hours and will travel along the Santa Fe air route once the repairs are completed.
Alamogordo AP correspondent reports C C Woods a hunter and trapper in the San Andreas Mountains for forty years has captured over 100 mountain lions along with coyotes and other predators. Lions are valued at about 25 dollars per calf with Woods earning an estimated 250000 dollars from lion hunting alone aided by his dogs. Woods hunts on horseback and often engages in hand to hand scrambles when his dogs are threatened.
Lions' Club of Alamogordo members attended a Rotary Club luncheon in the bank building basement. Rotary President Vel Lane organized a ten cent fine for seating, and Miss Ruth Welch provided musical accompaniment. Lions President Byron Shields invited Rotarians to future Lions lunches and a White Sands picnic with El Paso Juarez and Las Cruces clubs was planned for late August.
Mr and Mrs Tom Charles, active in collecting local relics, report finds including shell beads forming a necklace a glass arrow point and a copper bar with a hole. They speculate primitive copper use and propose a wet-string flaking method for arrow shaping drawing interest from scientific groups.

A local El Paso tale describes a mocking bird visiting a back door at noon to sing while a tom-cat sits below and meows. The bird allegedly lands, nips the cat on the nose, then returns to its perch and resumes singing, with the scene repeating daily. References offered on request.

Miss Ruby Rothwell and Mr Arthur Fowler both of Cloudcroft were married in Alamogordo on Monday July 30 by Justice Clements.
State College bulletin reports corn farming in New Mexico is relatively new but Indigenous growers cultivated it for centuries. Mexican June leads yields, with 7.5 bushels per acre more than Sure Cropper over four years. various planting methods and irrigation discussed.
A USDA scientist notes domestic guinea fowl in the United States rarely return to the wild despite opportunities for escape. They are established in Jamaica, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and parts of the Lesser Antilles, with mongoose predation suppressing numbers where present. Barbuda preserves wild populations after over two centuries of game reserve status.

Albuquerque July 27. Prohibition agents believe a bootlegger angry over enforcement is responsible for the burning of the car belonging to Charles H. Stearns director of prohibition for New Mexico. The vehicle was stolen in June and found today almost completely destroyed.
Mrs H M Vickery, long a resident of Alamogordo, died July 27 in Oakland California. She leaves husband two sons Claude and Herbert and two daughters Louise and Dorothy. In Alamogordo she worked at Peoples State Bank then at three consolidated banks. Interment was in an Oakland cemetery.
Mrs W G Campbell and Miss Mary Geisack visited Carlsbad. Mr and Mrs Lewis and daughters Alma and Annie went to Hope and Artesia. A L Means and Frank Sagem visited Alamogordo. Minor Huffman returned to Camp Wehinahpay. D B E Stephens traveled to Tularosa. A Sunday school party at the Methodist basement entertained well despite rain. J D Josey and son visited from Hope. The Boyces and child from Pinon visited. Mittie Buckner and Hazel Johnson returned from State College summer school. G E Robertson E K Morris and Richard Lewis returned from university. Virgil Guilliams family from De Nova Okla visiting. Mrs Mahill and daughter Sarah of Mayhill were seen. Means Bros A L and John KR were in the Rio Grande Valley.
Rochester scientists and public figures witnessed Geo Eastman’s color motion pictures using a three color light filter and a film with minute cylindrical lenses. The method promises accurate color reproduction for home movie cameras by inserting color film and threading in the special film.
A reported mineral cure for diabetes stirred chemists at Northwestern University with Dr Bertrand of France presenting cobalt and nickel in minute amounts. Rutgers' Dr Jacob Lipman said the French work remains experimental with limited dosing and the technique needing refinement.
Representatives of national museums rush to Folsom near the state’s north for glacial-age discoveries. Kirk Bryan of the Smithsonian and a Harvard professor left Albuquerque for the site where earlier digs found ancient buffalo and arrowheads indicating human habitation in the ice age.
Officers led by Howard Beacom found a still in the Penasco area and arrested Frank Rollins. He faced multiple charges with mixed pleas and was jailed in Alamo Gordo on a $1,000 bond. A copper still, an oil drum still, and bottled whiskey were tied to the case.
The Southern Pacific picnic from El Paso brought more than 2,000 people to the area last Sunday. The train arrived around 10 30 and left for El Paso at 6 30 after a day at the park. Visitors attended the Del Norte versus Alamogordo ball game and enjoyed an orchestra and skating at Stout rink with dancing in the afternoon.
Washington July 26 Will Barnes retires July 1 after twenty one years with the Forest Service United States Department of Agriculture in charge of Range Management. He will serve as Secretary of the United States Geological Board. A veteran of the Apache War he earned the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1881. Barnes has been a pioneer grazing expert and a leading figure in range management since joining the service in 1907.
Washington reports that about 350 million pairs of shoes are bought annually with half the hides and skins used for leather imported mainly from Asia South America and Africa. The U S Department of Agriculture urges better domestic leather production practices wiser consumer choices and proper care to conserve hides and skins and reduce reliance on imports.

August 22 and 23 see a series of First Aid and Life Saving demonstrations under the Otero County Chapter American Red Cross. A. T. McCue, special life saving representative of the National Organization, will present at the Clearwater Natatorium. McCue, attached to the Midwestern Red Cross, covers Kansas Colorado New Mexico and Texas and has trained thousands in swimming. He is a former Navy man and Denver resident.
Two grape laden cars derailed in the Tularosa freight yards last Saturday morning. The No 2 eastbound train had its engine leave the rails and traffic paused for hours. No 2 was moved to Alamogordo by Saturday afternoon. two refrigerator cars were badly damaged.
The U S Bureau of Animal Industry will start a free thirty day tuberculosis test in Otero County led by Dr E P Johnson from Pecos Valley. Every milking cow will be tested with two thirds of condemned cow value paid to owners. Tests are compulsory and cover part of the Tulareso Basin before moving into the mountains.
Railroads carrying mail for the Post Office Department won an increased annual pay of about 16 million dollars under a commerce commission order. They also received a lump sum of roughly 45 million dollars for underpayments dating back to July 1925, the commission ruled.
Test wells in southeastern New Mexico and west Texas show polyhalite can be used as a fertilizer without processing. Finely ground polyhalite boosted alfalfa growth by 0.7 percent, according to New Mexico A. & M. College experiment station.
At the Pressa exhibition a replica of Germany’s oldest newspaper setup will be printed on crude 17th century presses with period molds and carved type. The effort recreates a complete early printing establishment from southern Germany using handmade paper and reprints of Augsburger Aviso from 1609 under authentic conditions.
Federal agent Finley and Sheriff Cannedy with deputy McGill raided G. B. Coffin’s farm about 28 miles north of Clovis finding ten barrels of liquor buried in a kaffir corn field valued in the thousands. Coffin was bonded $1000 after pleading not guilty to liquor possession.
R B Otey partner of C H Cooper of Cooper and Otey was shot and killed at a lumber camp near Flagstaff Arizona Saturday night. Cooper learned of the death Sunday and started toward Flagstaff. Otey had been in charge of logging operations near Flagstaff for the Breece Company and previously lived with his wife at Cloudcroft.
Governor Dillon plans a Saturday night reception in Cloudcroft after accepting an invitation from the Cloudcroft Chamber of Commerce. He and his party will then proceed to the Carlsbad Caverns to meet Governor Moody of Texas and an official party. Alamogordo residents are invited to attend.
Mrs. Monroe Brantley left for Hayhill after a three week stay for appendicitis surgery. M. L. Bradford underwent an acute appendicitis operation at his Cloudecroft home and was moved to Alamogordo. Robert Dowdle had appendicitis surgery on Saturday and is recovering well. Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Bessie Zunatt of El Paso are at the hospital for surgical treatment, with Zunatt having a Monday operation. Edward Hekman is in for a tonsil operation.
John W. Diefendorf takes a new role as high school visitor for the University of New Mexico. He will visit North Central Association member high schools this year, consult with local officials on secondary administration, and report on school standards. Diefendorf earned a PhD from Missouri in 1926 and comes from Arkansas State Teachers College where he was professor of education.
The Lincoln Missionary Baptist Association in Glencoe New Mexico declares commitment to the eighteenth amendment and its laws and opposes officeseekers seeking repeal or modification. It appeals to citizens to back temperance as part of the campaign.
The Seventh and Delaware Ave church lists Sunday Masses at 8 and 10 a.m. with Spanish sermons, 7 p.m. benediction and Holy Sacrament, daily 6:30 a.m. Mass, Thursday religious instruction at 4 p.m., Friday prayers at 4 p.m., and daily 7 p.m. evening prayers. Non Catholics welcomed.
