Davis Family Returns From Canada Visit

Mr and Mrs Selby Davis returned from several weeks in Newbrook Alberta with their son Douglas and family. They discuss Canadian views on the war and the prospect of Canadians voting in the US election. Douglas Davis farms successfully in Canada raising draft horses and hogs amid rye barley and oats crops and variable wheat prospects.

Alamogordo Rifle Club picnic ends with team win at 600 yards

Alamogordo and Mountain Park Rifle Club members met at Mountain Park Range for a picnic and 200 yard off hand shoot. Cadwallader pies eaters beat Trujillo cake eaters by five at 600 yards. Individual scores list Cadwallader and Sadowsky among top shooters. Three club members qualify for New Mexico State Civilian Rifle Team.

New Mexico population seen surpassing 525000 in 1940 census

Preliminary figures forecast New Mexico's 1940 population at about 525000, up from 423317 in 1930. J H Newett, area census supervisor, notes gains mainly in municipalities with Hobbs rising 1600 percent and Albuquerque 34 percent, while rural areas stay relatively steady.

Death of Jose Lucero Famous Peace Officer

Jose R. Lucero a longtime Dona Ana County peace officer died after a prolonged illness in Las Cruces. He helped lead the county as sheriff in multiple terms from 1901 to 1938 with breaks, earning the nickname The Bloodless Sheriffs of New Mexico. He served as secretary of the Elephant Butte Irrigation District board and received recognition from Mexico for trailing lawbreakers. Survived by widow Simona, brother Felipe, two daughters and four sons in Las Cruces and beyond.

Roosevelt Urges Closest Cooperation Among the Americas

In San Francisco President Roosevelt rejected claims the U S has failed to defend liberal trade and warned that embracing totalitarian control would edge toward economic dictatorship He urged the closest possible economic cooperation with Western Hemisphere nations and pledged government support to preserve liberal trade principles.

Carrizo Indian Rodeo Planned for August 10 and 11

Manuel Second of Mescalero announced the Carrizo Indian Community Association rodeo will be held at Carrizo on Saturday and Sunday August 10 and 11. The usual rodeo events will be held. Carrizo lies miles southwest of Ruidoso Junction and miles northeast of Mescalero.

Cochran Obsequies Draw Out of Town Friends

Out of town mourners attended the funeral services for Mrs. R. L. Cochran including Ed Love and his mother Mamie Love from Lovington New Mexico and Jack Jester of Silver City. Rev Earl R Keating conducted the service from Plainview Texas where he was directing meetings.

Agreement Near at Southwest Lumber Strike Settlement

The strike at the Southwest Lumber Co. appears close to settlement after a late Wednesday session with Union negotiators and Louis Carr president of the company. Frank J Ashe and Vincent Jaeger aided talks. The deal calls for a minimum wage of 36 cents per hour and aims to resume mill and logging camp work by next Monday.

Roswell Ex-Mayor Albert Pratt Dies in Heart Attack

Albert Pratt former Roswell mayor died last night at his home in Pieseho from a heart attack while attempting to free his wife who was pinned between a car and a gate. He collapsed as neighbors assisted, and died en route to Roswell Mes hospital. Pratt suffered a broken collar bone.

Leo Rogers Remains Held Without Bond After Arraignment

Leo Rogers of Cloudcroft was arraigned on murder charges in the slaying of Herbert Nichols. Justice George Abbott ordered held without bond for trial in District Court after a lengthy closed-door session led by District Attorney Martin A. Threet who questioned witnesses for over an hour.

Army Recruiting Officer Visit Set for Alamogordo

A U S Army recruiting representative will be in Alamogordo on Thursday August 8 from about 9 a m to 12 noon at the post office. Eligible youths ages 18 to 21 may enlist with parent consent if under 21. Candidates must be U S citizens of good character unmarried with no dependents and meet height weight language and education requirements.

Death Claims Mrs. R. L. Cochran

Mrs. R L Cochran longtime Alamogordo resident died at home on New York Avenue after months of illness and a paralysis stroke. Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church with Rev Keating, interment in the local cemetery. Survived by husband Robert L Cochran two daughters Mrs George Dowdle and Mrs Bernard Love three grandchildren three sisters and one brother.

Tularosa To Stage Second Outdoor Pageant This August

Tularosa will present its second annual outdoor play in the high school stadium on August 27 and 28 directed by Chase Webb. The event includes a chuck wagon supper before each performance and recounts 1860 to present Spanish American settlers with scenes of Apache conflicts Round Mountain and the building of St Francis Church.
