Amos Morris, night watchman at the Eli Lilly Manufacturing Company plant in Indianapolis, Indiana, burned to death Saturday evening while attempting to save the facility from destruction. Fire erupted from the cellar after a lantern either exploded or sparked a blaze, trapping him as flames surged from barred packing-room windows. He fought the fire until his clothing ignited and he fled toward the barred window, calling for help as bystanders forced the iron shutters open. Morris died within minutes after suffering severe burns.
The Hai Ting arrived in Vancouver from Skaguay with news that Edward Daniels, cashier for Barsh & Co. of Dawson, allegedly fled with $35,000 to $50,000. Daniels is said to have been taken into custody on the American side near Eagle City, Alaska, and may face trial in Dawson. The ship carried 100 passengers and substantial gold dust.
