The Iowa Music Teachers Association announces Northwest District student piano auditions in Spencer and Sioux City on October 10 for Intermediate Junior High and High School levels. Each student has ten minutes to perform memorized pieces. judge J Earl Lee will rate performances and merit certificates go to top ratings. District winners advance to state finals October 11 in Sioux City. Rudolph Ganz will judge state finals and name state winners for the convention program October 12 and 13. District Chair Florence Primmer leads registrations with assistants Elma Jewett and Mildred Sweet. Officers are Robert M. Larson president Alvin Edgar vice president Olive Barker secretary and treasurer.

Acres seeded to grasses and legumes under ACP plan
Preliminary reports from South Dakota indicate over 400000 acres have been seeded to grasses and legumes this year under ACP Practice A-3. Olaf J. Jacobson says 17241 farmers have requested Federal cost sharing, with expectations of near 500000 acres of new rotation seedings and other practices possible this fall. He notes funds should cover eligible requests and urges farmers to contact local ASC offices soon to complete conservation work. The Agricultural Conservation Program is run locally by county ASC Committees.

Soil Erosion Threatens Plymouth County Farms
For years it has been realized that erosion was occurring at too rapid a rate throughout the country. Improper land use and poor treatment of the soil have been the predominate cause. In many cases the loss of this fertile top soil has been great enough to change productive farms.
Soil Conservation Measures Boost Erosion Control Efforts
A discussion on soil loss and conservation covers crop rotation contour farming and terracing. Contour farming reduces runoff and boosts infiltration, while terraces with broad ridges and wide channels enhance erosion control. In Plymouth County, July saw 6.3 miles of terraces built and 4.3 acres of waterway completed, with fall funding remaining through ACP cost sharing.
