Britain Gets 50 U.S. Destroyers In Exchange Deal
President Roosevelt announced a U.S. swap with Great Britain to lease bases in the Western Hemisphere in return for 50 older U.S. destroyers. The accord grants 99 year leases on sites in Newfoundland Bermuda Bahamas Jamaica St Lucia Trinidad Antigua and British Guiana to the United States to aid defense. In a separate crash, 25 people died when a Pennsylvania Central airliner crashed near Lovellsville Virginia during a violent thunderstorm. Among the dead was Senator Ernest Lundeen of Minnesota.
