May Drop Back Stamp Time Saving Plan In Chicago Postoffice

A Chicago post office experiment aims to save time and expenses by eliminating the back stamp that shows a letter’s arrival time. Narrow Escape in Storm Demolishes Two Tenements

A severe Newton storm struck Saturday morning, destroying a double tenement one block north of the public square and shocking Walter Hepler and Mattie Schooley. The lightning left marks on Hepler’s iron bedstead and narrowly missed Schooley on a couch below. Prominent farmer Harry Drenter shot Grace Reed and wounded her sweetheart Samuel Moore six miles north of Davenport. He then killed himself with a Winchester, after threatening neighbors and keeping the area in siege until officers arrived.

Charlton Coal Chute Burns in Burlington Rail Yard Fire

The new coal chute at Charlton, built last fall by the C. B. Q. railway at about $25,000, was totally destroyed by fire on Sunday along with a large quantity of coal. Tracks were blocked for hours, delaying trains. Cause unknown. possible gasoline engine explosion or dust explosion. The railroad will rebuild at once, causing major inconvenience as most trains coal at this site.

Band Plays In Church Sunday Service Feature

A brass band in the German Lutheran church near Hubbard Eldord features eight to seventeen cornets played by young men of the congregation each Sunday morning. Charles Kasischke, a local German farmer with a large Eldord farm, has led the band for years and four of his sons play. During practice the minister plays violin, a young woman organ, and 10 to 15 youths join in on cornets, creating a notable musical feature of the service unlikely to be duplicated in Iowa.

G R Ainsworth, a clerk at the Oaks Hotel in Clear Lake, is sought after allegedly stealing about 40 from managers and four to eight dollars from trunks of several female employees.
