Arkansas Hold-Up on Express Car Loot Stolen Train Left Standing

Five men robbed the No. 1 Cotton Belt passenger train near Bylau four miles south of Texarkana after forcing the fireman to back the engine and opening the mail and baggage cars. A large sum of money was secured from the express car before the robbers disappeared with the locomotive. No passengers were harmed, but travelers were frightened as the engine was driven away and later not found by 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. The exact amount remains undisclosed by Cotton Belt Railroad and the express company.

First Stake Driven for St Louis Exposition 1903

The first stake for the world fair to be held in St Louis in 1903 was driven Tuesday at Forest Park to mark the Louisiana Purchase centennial celebration. William H. Thompson, chairman of the groundstand buildings committee, led the ceremony with Louisiana Purchase Disposition Company officials and municipal officers present. The stake was later withdrawn for preservation.

After a several hours long conference in St Louis with President Francis and other Louisiana Purchase Exposition officials, Director General W S Buchanan of the Pan American Exposition left for Buffalo. Francis said Buchanan has consented to sustain an advisory relationship to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition within official and business engagements. He will share experience in exposition work and a wide foreign network.

Army Deserters Caught Near Cascade Iowa

Two men deserters from Fort Leavenworth were arrested while working on a Cascade area farm by deputy marshal G. F. Gustafson. George Hi Peters and Maurice Shaughnessy, who deserted August 10, were returned to Fort Leavenworth the same day. Peters’s mother lives in Rockwell City. Shaughnessy is from Creston. Also notes Humboldt camping season winding down as cooler weather returns, with over 100 campers this summer and many staying for business readiness.

Geo Stohiman collected oil samples near Frederika Bremer County from a well dug years ago forty-two feet deep. A tub of water from the site ignited when a match touched it. The oil will be analyzed by a competent chemist to determine value.

Death by own action of a Young Girl

Stella Dearborn of Floris aged 15 died near Ottumwa after swallowing strychnine. No cause is known for the act. Medical help was summoned but she died within five minutes of the physician's arrival.

Deputy Game Warden arrested Judge Hubbard of Cedar Rapids and Judge Trimble of Keokuk at Ledyard after they were found eating prairie chickens with three more in possession. The sixth annual Sioux Valley Woodmen's Association picnic at Onawa drew the largest crowd yet. Music came from the Onawa and Castana bands. Welcoming address was by Rev. J. R. Silas White an 80 year old Baptist circuit rider was killed by a Chicago Burlington and Quincy train while watching work on a culvert in east Red Oak.
