Floodlights Bring Seven Falls Dramatic Night Illumination
Colorado Springs crews illuminate Seven Falls and South Cheyenne Canyon with 80 floodlights and 1,000 spotlights making the canyon the world’s only fully lighted scenic gorge. An $10,000 anti aircraft beam, underwater lights for the trout pool, and a 90 watt sound system add to the spectacle. Oilman Al G Hill bought the 1,400 acre site in 1946 and spent over a year and about $100,000 on improvements including a stairway, parking, and a canyon arch. Inspiration Point offers a famed overlook tied to Helen Hunt Jackson, who is buried there.

In the Siskiyou national forest near Grants Pass Oregon the mule postman route between Illahe and Marial has been terminated by the government after the carrier offered too high a bid. The Marial route required 34 miles by river boat and 18 miles by mule at a cost of about 400 dollars per person, leaving only one mule route year round and twelve others used in winter. Residents depend on mail for clothing rifles food and more and express disbelief at losing the service.
