Temporary bridge over mill dam on Big Sioux river

The county hires a force to build a temporary bridge four feet above water and sixteen feet wide with rails on both sides. Corn ripening fast. in two weeks it will resist frost. A dozen German farmers fought over a horse trade last Monday. five arrested. three fined for disorderly conduct by Mayor Sullivan. Iowa game law allows prairie chicken hunting after September 1. Akron’s G A R encampment delegation to Philadelphia departed with six members from Adaville. Miss Josie Agnes moved to attend St Francis Academy at Council Bluffs after a surprise sendoff. Earl Edgington plans a bicycle race at Beresford and again at Plymouth county fair. he is expected to win prizes.

Akron’s fall M C A opens with remodeled rear building

The local M C A opened for the fall and winter season last evening in a rebuilt Wendt’s store frame. Gym on lower floor reading rooms and recreation upstairs provide supervised wholesome amusements for Akron’s young men and boys.

Conservation Reserve signup outlined for Plymouth County

Farmers should bring required information to apply for a basic Conservation Reserve rate at the county ASC office. The deadline to establish a basic rate per acre under the 1960 program is September 10. Eligibility requires harvested crops or regular rotation in 1959, with tame hay land eligible if perennial grasses or legumes exist and hay or silage was harvested in 1956 to 1959.

County X Ray Unit to Visit Plymouth County in September

The Ply mouth County Tuberculosis and Health Association executive board set a county wide x ray schedule for September 15 to 22. Free miniature chest x rays will be offered to every resident 18 and older. children may receive x rays only with physician request. The unit aims to detect TB and other chest conditions and will travel to multiple locations, with further notices in local papers.

Speech tests planned for Plymouth County pupils

Public school pupils in Plymouth County in grades three six and nine plus referrals will undergo hearing tests this year with speech assessments also for referred students and third graders. The program led by County Superintendent Christine Peterson McCormick supervisor Ray Beamer and speech therapist Robert Fulton includes a follow up a month later and potential medical referrals if needed. Wool Growers Vote On Wool Market Development Plan

Wool producers will vote in September on continuing to finance a market development program for wool and lambs. The referendum, overseen by the Plymouth county ASC committee, requires a two thirds producer vote by volume. Ballots mailed before Sept 1, voting ends Sept 30, with deductions limited to 1 cent per pound for shorn wool and 5 cents per hundredweight for lambs.

Johnson Jr Homemakers 44H Club Holds August Meeting

The Johnson Jr Homemakers 44H club met August 24 at Lynne Coon's home with seven members and two readers present. President Nancy Wendt chaired, bills were presented by Peg Geisler and Karen Willer, and an invitation from Johnson Jr Farmers to a skating party on August 25 at LeMars was accepted. The group planned a future supper and movie in Sioux City. lunch was served by Judy Netley, the hostess's mother.
