Westfield Congregational Church holds annual picnic on Sunday September 4 at the Knapp home with a 12 30 p m dinner. First Westfield PTA meeting set for September 12 featuring Europe slide program by Lilly brothers and Larry Michael. Community groups thank supporters for the library benefit which raised 110 dollars to aid public library expenses. Several local families and visitors are noted, with updates on travels, attendances at gatherings, and condolences for a former Westfield resident.
The Marple Campbell reunion took place at Alcester Park on Sunday August 21. Mrs Bessie Johnson of Chico California arrived by plane and Mr and Mrs Wm Oaks of Dexter Oregon traveled by car to attend. A very pleasant surprise as all of the attendees gathered for the event.
A large family gathering drew many relatives from Iowa Nebraska and South Dakota to celebrate with Mrs Wm Oaks and Doyle Oaks. Attendees included Fred Marple and family from Aledo Til Kenneth Marple and family from Cleveland Ohio Roy Shimmer from Sutherland Iowa M M Johnson and family from South Sioux City Neb J H Johnson and children plus several other Oaks Wilken Marple and Andrews relatives. After a bounteous dinner the afternoon featured visiting reminiscing horseshoe games and tours of antique car buildings. Birthday cakes honored Mrs Wm Oaks and Doyle Oaks with birthday songs and well wishes. Next year’s reunion will be held in Sutherland Iowa.
Regular town council session opened by Mayor C R Mason with five council members present. Minutes approved. Bills, July 1960 reports viewed and approved. Numerous vendors listed for street, pool, police, and public works services and supplies with total expenditures noted.
In Washington the rump session is blamed for leaving most work undone before conventions. Predictions include minimal legislation this year, with hopes for a few acts like a minimum wage plan or aged care reforms, while public housing and education bills face long odds.
KELO Radio repeats the King Korn Carnival with two million free stamps starting September 5th. Listeners pick up entry blanks at National Food Stores and King Korn outlets, mail in weekly word lists for 100 stamps, and entering all ten weeks wins a 1 000 stamp silver award with daily announcements.
Pastor Luther A Meyer leads 12th Sunday after Trinity with 8 15 am KLEM radio sermon by Pastor Conrad Guetzlaft at 8 46 am. Sunday school at 10 am divine worship. Brotherhood meet Thursday 8 pm hosted by Elmer Gerdes and Delmar Gerrietts. Confirmation class Saturday 8 30 am. Trinity Mission Festival on Sept 11.

West Side Church of Christ lists Bible school at 8 a.m. worship at 11 a.m. with Lord's Supper and sermon. Elders lead services in Akron and LeMars. Orris and Talbot drive to Last Chance Camp in Northern Minnesota. No evening services for weeks due to church work. Men work Mon Thu Fri evenings. ladies host lunch. Friday September 9th marks the 28th annual Recreation Leaders Workshop and 12th Governors Conference on Recreation at Hotel Ft Des Moines Iowa from 9:00 to 4:00. Civic group leaders will learn new games and crafts by doing them, with two sessions on recreation in County Homes and Nursing Homes. Dr Harold D Meyer national recreation authority will give the luncheon address and assist the session on Recreation in Small Towns. Meyer has led the statewide recreation program in North Carolina. All sessions are free.
Invited groups and individuals concerned with recreation in their community are welcome at all meetings. The Workshop and Conference aim to provide practical recreation helps to advance recreation throughout Iowa.
