Increase Yields of Sugar Beets
The United States Department of Agriculture reports that applying sufficient superphosphate raises sugar beet yields and sweetness. Experiments show phosphorus as the limiting element. 90 pounds of phosphoric acid boosted yield by about seven tons per acre, while 80 pounds of ammonia gave far less. Substituting motives for phosphate improved results, with 125 pounds per acre of 16 percent phosphate yielding notable gains. Phosphates also make beets 1 to 2 percent sweeter, and are low cost and easy to apply.
