The Plymouth County Post Secondary School Information Program will be held at LeMars Community High School on Wednesday October 23 at 7 30 p m Representatives from 38 colleges 4 nursing schools 3 business schools 3 technical and trade schools and 2 beauty schools will attend Students may visit three schools of their choice Parents are invited and encouraged to attend Fourteen students have signed up The program aims to let students and parents meet counselors from various schools in one evening without traveling to each campus
On October 10 the Norka Staff met after school to continue work on the 1963 64 Norka. The editor Norma Siebens has begun plans in the dum my book to preview the yearbook. Selling down payments will begin soon. Total costs will not exceed four dollars. Advertising will be sold in half quarter or eighth page formats to Akron firms.
Speech class students learn to prepare and deliver speeches suited to occasions. Early talks include ice breakers of three to five minutes, with a forty five minute autobiography as a final project. Other speeches cover formative personal experience demonstration and impromptu formats under Mrs Smith guidance after dinner demonstrations.
Impromptu and prepared talks will be given and read by speech students. They will stage a one act play debate discuss and hear a guest speaker. Each speech is criticized by peers helping identify bad habits and corrections. Homecoming is over as the Student Council begins work on a new student handbook. It will include a school floor plan rules extracurriculars and athletic contest schedule. The council will raise funds with a candy sale and sell pins bearing AHS and grad year.
On Saturday October 19 the Akron High School Band travels to Brookings for the Hobo Day parade with buses departing around 5:00 a.m for a 9:45 a.m event. Afternoon options include watching the South Dakota State vs South Dakota game in Vermillion or a free movie while band members refine their instruments. The Homecoming halftime show featured Alan Hemmingsen leading the band solo as Linda Waterman served as marshal. Also noted is a visit by 23 band students to Sioux City to hear the Marine Band with exceptional precision. Akron Junior High recently lost two football games to Jefferson and Vermillion. Akron FFA chapters highlight activities under the National FFA framework with land judging, selling produce, and other events.
The Akron FFA Chapter, sponsored by Mr. Goudge, maintains FFA standards with committees for supervised farming community service earnings and savings conduct of meetings recreation public relations and state and national activities. The Iowa Association FFA reported 10121 members in 262 chapters during 1962 63 and Iowa FFA holds contests for market and breeding sheep swine and dairy heifers while the National FFA also conducts various contests.
The Iowa Farm Loss Prevention Institute reports that the eight month fire loss in Iowa exceeded 1 million dollars. Rural and urban damages show 460 rural fires totaling 2 084 076 and 1 509 urban fires causing 6 610 905 in damages. Officials urge a preventive program during National Fire Prevention Week.
