Snowfall Monday slowed Akron Hawarden area homecoming events with slushy streets and attendees facing disruption. Despite weather, students carried on with a victorious game against Remsen Union and the coronation of 1977 king Chace Anderson and Brenda Osterburh. Parade marshal Dave Nixon leads the Westmar College event in Le Mars, marking the new college president Ben Wade era.

Chapter 1C of P.E.O met on Tuesday Oct 4 at Mrs Edith Bakers home. Mary Ellen Olson presented a program on the old fashioned one room school renovated and located in Sioux City. Classes are held daily with third and sixth grade students. These are sample classes taught as they were in the past. On Sept 22 Friendship and Service club met at Shirley Nelsons home with Sue Mortensen as co host. Guests were Bob and Esther Hoogeveen of Sheldon. Hoogeveen shared a Handicap Village program with slides and history of residents progress since arrival. The club plans a Christmas craft and bake sale on Saturday Dec 1 at Rod and Nancy Reed's. Applications for LEWC scholarships are available to high school seniors and federated clubwomen. The October 13 meeting will be at Penny Hartmanns home with Evelyn Claesson as co hostess.

Girl Scouts Observe Troop 118 First Birthday
On October 5 the Troop 118 marked its first birthday with a party. Mrs Oetken baked a cake featuring a Girl Scout emblem. Patrol leaders Tonya Henry Julie Dowling Shelly Croy and Staci Oetken were installed. Denise Wilken became troop scribe and Tonya Henry treasurer.
West Side parish ships 15 boxes to Japan on 25th year
The West Side Church of Christ packed 15 Christmas and food boxes for the Mark Moxey family in Kanoya Kagoshima Japan, marking the 25th year of sending aid. Airman Scott A Westin, son of Mrs Mary B Westin of Elk Point, was selected for instruction in communications electronics at Keesler AFB Mississippi after Lackland basic training. He earned credits toward an associate degree and is a 1977 Elk Point High School graduate.

At Trinity Lutheran Akron Jeanne Ann Huls daughter of Mr and Mrs Conrad Huls of Akron and Max Arnold Noack son of Amanda Noack of Huron South Dakota were united in marriage on September 2 1977. The Rev Durwood Clauson officiated the 4 pm vows with Isabel Onnen and Wanda Onnen providing organ and flute music. The bride wore a white dotted swiss gown with puff sleeves and a double illusion veil from a Camelot cap. Attendants wore blue and yellow crinkle crepe gowns with carnations and daisies. Guests included the bride’s grandmother and the groom’s grandparents. A reception followed at the church.
