Community grieves prominent Akron dentist and civic figure Dr C R Mason. Thanksgiving and Christmas plans unfold with Akron Prize Days drawings, merchant promotions, and a schedule of sports events. Local reporters thank volunteers and note family gatherings and seasonal snow in Iowa. Happy Birthday Jerry and Shorty.
Albert Moehlmann 56 of Chatsworth died Friday November 22 1974 at a Sioux City hospital after a weeklong illness. Services were held November 26 at St Matthew's Lutheran Chatsworth with Rev Durwood Clauson officiating. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery Akron under Schroeder Funeral Home. Survivors include Violet his wife a son Gary of Cherokee a daughter Carol Buchman Hawarden his parents two sisters Edith Packard and Eileen Moehlmann and five grandchildren.
A Thanksgiving Christmas program will be held December 1 at 7 30 p m at Pleasant Hill chapel Pastor Christopherson and members of Roseni church will lead the service A pot luck lunch will follow the service Everyone is welcome to attend
Chatsworth News reports Mr. and Mrs. G Moller hosted relatives from Boone Iowa and Akron while Ken Johnson’s grandson Kyle Johnson returned home after a Omaha visit. Numerous guests visited local homes including the Collmann Frerichs Moehlmanns Hendricks Buchmans Dennison and Hitzemann with plans announced for a senior citizens meeting December 2 at 2 00 p.m.
Truman Campbell’s grandson Kevin Frank and four fellow Mu Alpha members from Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, stopped at the Campbell grandparents’ home in Akron on November 5 to play fraternity pranks. Their objective was to keep Dvorak of Melvin away from another group for a day. They spent part of the day with Mr and Mrs Campbell and also attended President Ford’s speech in Sioux City.
Friday afternoon visitors included Mr and Mrs Art Wetrosky at the George Bern home and Mrs Tessie Moran at the Ron Trudo home. Dora Bern hosted a birthday party Saturday with Esther Moffatt Elsie Nelson Vera Ross Bessie Buryanek Helen Joseph and Mariah Lewis among the guests. Curt Bowman was hospitalized at St Luke's Medical Center after a fall left him with a broken leg. Mr and Mrs Frank Mattas of Merrill visited the George Bern home Sunday. Mr and Mrs Harry Rehder of Calumet Iowa and Mrs Kate Bern of Cherokee joined relatives at the George Bern residence. The piece ends with a quip about being a good sport.
A special board of education meeting is scheduled for December 2 to discuss teachers salaries insurance renewal vacation help and planning for the next school year. The meetings are open to the public.
Westfield Community School Board of Education met November 14 1974 with all members present. Minutes and monthly reports were approved. Bills authorized. A maternity leave policy from IASB Negotiations Update was adopted and Dr John Conley was endorsed for IASB board member. Bus driver pay set at 1 90 an hour. A special teachers meeting was scheduled for December 2 1974.
The library announces new adult titles including House of Many Shadows by Barbara Michaels and Next Of Kin by Brady Hasty Carroll, plus Starfall about Gus Grisson and other works by Nabokov, Tyler, and more. In the junior section Laura Ingalls Wilder’s West From Home covers her 1915 San Francisco trip, with new sports books and Who's Who Among American High School Students 1973 74 noting Akron pupils.
The Book and Thimble Club met at Penny Bryant’s home on November 19 with 20 members present. Devotions read Psalms 95, Creed recited, new member Charlotte Hopp welcomed. P.E.O. Chapter J.C. met at Evelyn Claesson’s, 16 members, budget talks, by law amendments, Christmas gifts planned, Thanksgiving program featured poems and articles.
Mr and Mrs Harley Lewison visited Sunday at the home of Mr and Mrs James Gieske in Sioux Falls for the baptism of their great grandson Bradley Alan Gieske. Mrs Lester Van Buskirk and Samuel from Cloquet Minn are spending the holidays with her parents Mr and Mrs Dean Malcom. Sioux Valley Extension club meets Friday Dec 6 at Edith Bakers home with a gift for mystery sister. Larry Jensen and Troy of Overland Park Kans visit Francis Hazel family for the weekend and attend Westmar college alumni basketball game where Larry played with former teammates.
Local staff nurses from Akron hospital attended an Obstetrics Seminar at Sheldon on November 13. Sponsored by the Iowa Nurses Association and NIVS, the workshop focused on caring for high risk mothers and babies with poor survival prospects. Attendees included Pam Borchers Jan Liston Carolyn Simons and Lana Van Engen.
Millie Gubbrud presented a style show for about 70 ladies at the Akron Club house Friday evening November 15. The event, sponsored by Friendship and Service club members, featured dresses capes pant suits and a wedding dress made from drapery material.
Sioux Viking Lodge 494 Sons of Norway will meet Tuesday December 3 at 8 p.m. at the CF hall 1224 18th Street. The regular business meeting includes election of officers for 1975. Mr and Mrs Marvin Gulsrud will present the Norwegian National Family program. Marcella Frazier is social director.
The nursing home marked a birthday week with Eunice Burker turning 85 on November 19 and Ed Larson 81 on November 18, plus Helen Horton 78 on November 23 and Ed Blum 93 on the 23. Residents and guests hosted and attended parties with sandwiches coffee and cake. A Thanksgiving program, piano duets, hymns, and a short comedy show were shared, with several residents taking an airplane ride for new views.

Akron Rainbow assembly No. 172 schedules a special meeting at the Masonic temple Friday November 29 at 1 p.m. Initiation of new members will be held.
