Two Navy pilots Lieuts Hugh M. Kelly and Brice L. Billington were killed instantly when their biplane, at 300 feet, suddenly pitched nose down and crashed near the North Island air camp. The engine and propeller action likely contributed to fatal chest injuries.
Des Moines saloon men begin circulating new consent petitions to reopen saloons. About 300 saloonists pledge to fight for reopening in a clean, legitimate campaign. Judge Gaynor notes a misreading in a recent Iowa Supreme Court opinion and says Des Moines will not be affected by Fort Dodge ruling.
Havana cafes restaurants and hotels shut doors to protest a decree setting a ten hour workday for waiters. Proprietors vow continued closures until the government suspends the measure. The matter was raised at a cabinet meeting but no action was taken.
Agents of the department of justice began an investigation into an alleged combination of cold storage concerns. Attorney General McReynolds says such a combination may be responsible for high prices of eggs and other products. If a combination is discovered, criminal prosecution may result.

Oliver Wilson of Peoria Ill re elected worthy master of the National Grange at Manchester New Hampshire. David Weber a prominent farmer near New Boston Indiana found dead after being gored and trampled by a bull. Packey McFarland of Chicago defeated Kid Alberta of New York in a ten round bout at Waterbury Conn. Mrs J P Williams a rare female railroad president was reelected president of the Georgia Florida Alabama railway at Bainbridge Ga.

Huerta seeks congressional justification for dictatorial acts and orders garrison commander General Maas to oppose landing American Marines at Veracruz. Funeral services for Dr. Carl Hobson of Hampton were held Monday after a brief pneumonia illness. He was 28 and a graduate of the state university, son of Dr. A. J. Hobson.
The theft of 200 chickens from John H. Chinn’s farm southeast of Marshalltown was reported to the sheriff. Chickens are believed to have been brought to the city and shipped out.
Marshalltown loses editor F Widl, longtime head of the Baobachter, a German newspaper. He died early Tuesday from heart disease at age 60.
The last of the concrete work on this year's paving contract has been finished and the asphalt crew are working overtime. About 1.5 miles of paving have been put in this year.

Fort Dodge report says prominent Clare merchant Charles Donahoe is hospitalized with broken ribs and lung injury after a roadside auto incident. Warrants issued for John Cunningham Walter Cameron and Charles Burke for assault with intent to murder. William Fox drivers involved. Donahoe had fined Cunningham $28 when mayor, leading to the confrontation.
District Court halted after discovery a grand juror could neither read nor write. Law requires literacy for jurors, invalidating all indictments this year. Juror served at every term, four sessions, prompting Judge Vermilion to order disregard of all grand jury findings this term. If any convictions exist from this year involving that juror, retrials may occur.

A large barn owned by W. B. Clark in the county burned to the ground. It housed 1 460 bushels of grain sixty tons of hay harness and farm machinery. Total loss listed at 3 000 dollars. Clark saved forty one head of horses and cattle from the blaze.
Dooley, accused by George Herman of abusing his wife and children, was marched to jail by the street commissioner at gunpoint. Herman charged Dooley with intoxication and family abuse in a tense confrontation escalating to formal custody in Marshalltown. Also reports Dubuque missing person J H Kissel, last seen four weeks ago, prompting concern from his former employer and colleagues.
The annual gathering of Lucga county Christian churches ended at the Chariton Christian church after a splendid attendance.
A tailor named Tem temple nearly burned to death at the YMCA when he went to bed smoking. His cigarette set the mattress afire as smoke filled the room. Satella Bed on Fire reported.
Miss Alving Robingon a Simpson graduate on furlough from Rangoon Burmah returned August. visiting Humaston and connected with the Methodist women's board. She has been with her family in the state.
Rabbi Lobyichensky was arrested for illegal liquor selling on a charge filed by Benjamin Qohen of Iowa City. he pleaded not guilty.
