Community observance of Thanksgiving includes services across Akron churches. Wesley United Methodist Church hosts a service Wednesday evening led by Pastor David Roy Pastor Dean Orris and Pastor Mike McHugh with special music. A free will offering supports needy Akron families. public invited.
Jeane Marie Bernard and David Laverné Moon exchanged vows at 11 oclock on October 23 at St. Marys Catholic Church Spirit Lake Iowa. Father Becker officiated the ceremony with Mary Orwig as soloist and Sister Clare Becker at the organ.
Marleen Welch of Des Moines and Ivan D. Wessling of Waterloo sealed vows Sept 25 at St Mary’s in Waterloo Iowa with Rev Father Fredrick Fangman officiating. Attendants included Kathleen Welch Lynette Welch and David Larson and Gary Sams. The couple plans a home in Waterloo after a wedding trip to St Louis.

A condensed list of local group meetings and events from Nov 24 to Dec 3, including church services at Wesley United Methodist and St John s Lutheran, TOPS club, Rainbow, WEMS, and ladies circles, plus Christmas fairs and a craft sale. Highlights include hospital auxiliary meeting Thanksgiving week, YoMaCo Ice Cream party, and Holiday Craft sale on Dec 18.
The Mary The Book and Thimble Club met Tuesday afternoon November 9 at Mrs Helen Adams home. Roll call named a famous American woman. A playlet Julia Ward Howse presented by Oma Gassman Besse Lias Esther Fergerson and Doris Campbell. Lunch was served by the hostess.
Eighteen members of the Friendship and Service club met November 11 at Akron city hall with Jeanne Hinrichsen as hostess. A federation news flash and report on a GFWC president elect speech were presented. A holiday craft and bake sale will be held December 18 to benefit the playground equipment fund.
Liberty-Johnson Farm Bureau women gathered at Viola Brown’s home with Jean Foley co-hostess. Marjorie Jelken led the meeting, roll call covered Thanksgiving interests, and a pledge to the flag was recited. They voted to donate a bicentennial scrapbook to Akron nursing home and sent Christmas gifts to Bud Hansel at Glenwood Care Center.
The production progresses with cast practicing music and lines for the show to run Friday through Sunday December 3 to 5 at 8 p.m. Members overdue on renewals should mail checks to ACT or call Mrs Dave Nelson before reservations start November 29. Pleasant Hill chapel association hosts its annual Thanksgiving and Christmas program at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon November 28. Pastor Lundgren will lead the service. A group of ladies from Rosens Lutheran church will provide the music.
Representatives from Akron clubs are invited to attend a short informative meeting on what the library offers. Mrs. O Harris donates two large print books in memory of Lois Nelson. New arrivals include The Shepherd by Frederick Forsyth and A Christmas Feast by James Charlton, with Yuletide materials for all ages.
St Patrick's and St Catherine's Catholic churches Akron and Westfield sponsor a Christmas fair on Saturday December 4 from 11 am to 6 30 pm at St Joseph's parish hall Akron. Lunch with homemade vegetable soup taverns pies and Iowa corn fed buffalo sandwiches. Also a fancy work handicraft booth country store Park Lane Jewelry Avon products on sale. Quilling demonstration by Lois Helseth at 3 pm. Public invitation.
Mr and Mrs Howard Powell of Akron invite friends and relatives to an open house December 5 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Akron golf club house celebrating their 50 years of marriage. Hosting by their children Donald Powell Rutland South Dakota and Wayne Miller Le Mars with five grandchildren. Iva Pike and Mr Powell wed December 4 1926 at Vermillion South Dakota.
Mr and Mrs Lester Boyd of Ronan Montana celebrated sixty years of marriage with a Sunday Nov 7 gathering at their son Kenneth Boyd’s home. Over sixty relatives attended with a noon family dinner and afternoon visiting. The couple homesteaded at Two Dot then moved to Westfield and back to Montana in 1942. They have two sons Kenneth Rowan Montana and Fay Cedar Rapids Iowa and six grandchildren.
Akron announces the engagement of Jolene Kay Hull to Dwight Dirks of Le Mars. The couple plans marriage next year. Jolene works at the Highway Cafe in Akron and Dwight at Wilson Trailer Co. in Sioux City.
The Westfield area reports visits to Minnie Postlewait by Mr and Mrs Roy Postlewait and Beverly Hey of Sioux City. Numerous residents attend Senior Citizens meetings, cookie making at Westside Church of Christ, and birthday celebrations for Ed Larsen 83 Eunice Burkett 87 and Ed Blum 95. Families from Le Mars Sioux City Elk Point and Akron visit homes and share coffee, cake, and memories.
